Still likely to make a hell of a mess, but... is looking not as bad as it could have been, yeah. So long as some ungodly fluke doesn't happen and it bounces off the coast and into the gulf proper or somethin' :-\

Any case, tropical storm level winds forecast to start ramping in around here about 1 AM in the morning, peak around 10 AM. So long as the forecast is accurate and a tornado doesn't kick up we'll probably be fine where I'm at, though gods only know what'll happen to utilities. Might have nothing happen, might be days before we're back up, usual stuff.

Bright side, storm looks like it's going to be keeping temps under 70 until tuesday, and under 90 until next sunday or thereabouts. Will be a mercy if the power does indeed drop.

In quantity, probably. Plenty of other stuff's had more time to do its thing. Otherwise there ain't all that much difference.

6768
Identify it as similar behavior, at least, sure. Shoe fits, and all that.

Seems that pretty much the entire state could potentially see the eye at this point, tbh, ha. Still, yeah. Glad you got out, isp.

Also good gods, but the trouble with being around old people. Grandparent was saying they had seen the news say irma was already in the fucking gulf. Also saying there's no chance in hell they'll leave even if the storm does do that. Which'll be interesting if it does and they're actually that insistent. I've never tied someone up and physically forced them into a vehicle before.

Damned thing does look like it's projected further west than it was last I saw it. Not actually into the gulf, but potentially skimming up the west coast.

6770
Last I saw anything it's on its way but fairly strongly projected to not make landfall or, if it does, will be hitting the cap and state a further up the coast.

Hey, for what it's worth, it's georgia and SC. There's like maybe four or five places anyone cares about between the two of them. Casual border trading by means of storm confusion might be able to go unnoticed...

Plenty of folks pretty literally can't leave, or would end up in an even worse situation if they tried. Then there's the crazies, but I honestly doubt that's even a plurality. Some will always end up staying, unless we start physically removing people who refuse or can't comply with evacuation orders... or find ways to make evacuation guaranteed if desired and free of individual charge for at least portions of the population, I guess.

Dunno if a different naming scheme would help any. Something like Death Megatron 3000 definitely wouldn't, though. Too likely to cause people to brush it off as exaggeration.

... yeah, looks like the NWS is starting to outright plead that anyone left in the keys gets the hell out while they're still alive. Partially in tweets or not, been a while since I've noticed something coming out of the NWS sounding that desperate :-\

I mean... it is, the history book part, least for a bit. It's already broke at least one world record for hurricanes.

Scary is relative, I guess, but I'd be pretty comfortable saying irma is indeed fucking terrifying, sure. At the least up to this point. Persistent hope it turns out to be less so by the time it actually hits florida (not that that's going to do much for the caribbean-area islands, the poor bastards), but...

E: Also yeah, current recon flight looks to be seeing 160+ mph winds in the part of the eyewall they've covered so far. Signs increasing it's strengthened back into a solid cat 5 or in the process of it, rather than hovering as a still-disastrous cat 4 or low-end cat 5.

Also it's about to make landfall on cuba. Probably only able to make things worse for 'em by so much, at this point, but... yeah. Hope things go as least bad as possible for 'em :-\

6776
... another reason among several hundred thousand to hope it doesn't hit at cat 5, I guess.

speaking of that

Those uninterested in checking twitter links, it's a heads up that recent recon of the storm is showing the pressure beginning to drop (again). Which is apparently one of the signs it may be getting ready to rev back up, which is a helluva' thing to say considering cat 4 is already more or less chainsaw on nitro.

Or to put it a different way, your average hurricane ends up pumping energy equivalent to a few (tens of) thousand(s of) nukes. Bloody things average a bit under three WW2s worth of explosives (including the nukes) per minute.

6779
Good luck. Hopefully you're in a relatively safe place, 'cause folks are hammering things pretty hard that this is too damn likely to be more dangerous than matthew was. Or pretty close to any hurricane that's hit the south east US since we've been recording the things.

As for wind speed, smj, latest I've seen is that irma's down to a strong cat 4 at the moment, but a) hasn't hit that patch of warm water in between florida and the islands and b) has been increasing in size and total energy even as the winds have slacked up a bit. Sustained winds lower, potential scope and total shitkick being carried along, higher, and the bones on reintensification still to be rolled.

More of*. Keys are more beach than most but this entire state is a swamp, just tamed to varying degrees. That said, yeah, keys probably about to just kinda' sink. Pretty sure not the first time, for what it's worth. Things are about the most vulnerable place in a state that might as well be the glowing part of a giant crab.
