I get the impression that there were fights during the entire day before the car murder.

https://www.nytimes.com/video/us/100000005363670/charlottesville-virginia-white-nationalist-protests.html
Yeah, a lot of that is because the night before a few hundred Nazi supporting fucks surrounded about thirty-ish protesting students and beat the shit out of them with lit torches. The day after you had the occasional pepper spray and brawl, which was something between incredibly brave and pretty stupid for the counter-protesting folks considering the marchers were littered with shits carrying firearms.

Then the nazi shit killed someone in a terrorist attack, and soon thereafter the president bothsides the event as swaths of the right wing either embraced the literally fucking murderous Nazi shitbag or pointedly refrained from criticizing him and/or the other Nazis and people marching right beside goddamn Nazis.

Eh, I'm getting increasingly sympathetic to the argument that when the nazi flags come out, that's no longer a peaceful protest, regardless of if they're actually actively attacking some one. Unless they're being burnt, I guess. When your shtick has genocide as a core goal I don't think you get to claim you're doing anything but trying to drum up enough support to start getting away with murder. Which ain't peaceful unless your head's not screwed on straight.

Could also say that, whatever argument is to be made for calling people out on violence, if there's Nazis involved you shut up until there isn't any more. Looking increasingly like this shit is base moral cowardice in the face of something that is real (they) damn (are) straightforward (Nazis), not some kind of high ideal. Some things you don't tolerate, and the fascist genocidal shits are on the shortlist and pretty high up. Especially so far as the U.S. goes. Going by our history we have an answer for what is warranted to put a stop to that breed of fascism, what tilts the scales of relative inequity close to even, and that answer was nuclear fire. So if we ain't hit that yet, there's still a good long way to go.

... amusing thing is there's apparently a (rare, possibly now extinct?) species of fish that looks rather a lot like it has fur. Can also run into a few different species that get infected with a particular sort of mold that leaves them what amounts to furry. No fish have fur, but some fish are furry.

E: Or, in other words, always be cautious making generalisations about animals. Nature is a tricksie little jackass that likes screwing with people, and likes to always have that one gods only know what the hell one hiding in some mountain valley that just like, "Yeah, no, class commonalities can bite my scaly mammal ass."

I mean... some of them. Evangelicals are protestants, no two churches alike. Mild exaggeration, but only mild.

In any case, at this point I don't really give a fuck what trump is, or is not, so far as that stuff goes. Bastard got in front of a TV camera and put people standing up to Nazis on the same level as Nazis. Went in front of the world and made a comparison that put the U.S., Allied forces, and the veterans of WW2 in a position ethically on par with Nazi Germany and the Wehrmacht. Only damn excuse for that is literal brain damage, and I'm not entirely sure that's enough.

Regardless of what's in the shit's head what came out his mouth makes him a goddamn Nazi sympathizer. Whether he's actually a white supremacist on top of it no longer bloody matters, far as I'm concerned. Far as anyone who's worth calling themselves American should be concerned, frankly.

Last I checked there's a non-negligible amount that are, actually. Books are fragile as all hell, stone tablets/engravings weather if they're not in very lucky circumstances. As I recall, at least some of the memory storage we're using these days are more robust than either of those, or able to subsistent (in part, if nothing else) in more environments.

Good sodding god, I didn't quite realize I had this rage button. Apparently when you go up and put folks standing up to nazis on the same level as nazis, effectively equating folks like my grandfather, and what other WW2 vets are still alive (never mind all the dead ones), with the fucking Wehrmacht, something in me has a good try at going incandescent. Not something I run over very often.

I'd just like to interject that Fields hasn't been charged with terrorism, and I sort of feel it's jumping the gun to say it was a terrorist attack. The guy's a diagnosed schizophrenic, and until his trial he isn't going to get any chance to defend himself.

I'm not trying to make excuses for the guy; I personally feel he's a murderous asshat. But, until there's been an investigation and a trial, nobody'll know for sure what actually happened.
Yeah, see, while if you're asking my legal opinion I'd agree with that, in context of our POTUS? Nah man. This is the exact sort of thing he shat on the mayor of goddamn london for, and if he waited for an investigation on that one it's news to me. The definition of terrorist I'm rolling with right now is the same one he used, and probably being used more cautiously.

Regardless of what the legal definition is, or what the man is eventually convicted of, so far as our president is concerned, the POTUS is acting to downplay the actions of a group that had one of their members commit what he has called, and stridently, terrorist attacks. So I'll keep calling them that, because that's the context our nazi sympathizing craven shit in chief is working from.

E: Incidentally, my still living grandfather may happen to be a WW2 vet, and for all his faults one of the people in my life that I respect the most, and who has done the most for me. This is shitting on him, it's shitting on his fellow military that killed and died to stop that ideology, and it's shitting on this country and every other one, including the one we fucking nuked, that were fucked by the sort people folks in that rally were marching with. There may be some vitriol at this point.

... huh. So trump's new play, in the wake of a right-wing terrorist attack, is to lambaste the alt-left. This seems to be leaving rather a lot of people confused, looking around, because intent obvious or not, nothing really calls themselves that.

He's.... basically playing up his support for the white supremacist/neo-nazi rally that ended in a terrorist attack  killing an american citizen, he's doing it by trying to bothsides at a side that just kinda' isn't there.

Pro-nazi POTUS attempts to blame imaginary opposition group for nazi terrorist attack. There was a time that, had I thought of that even being a possibility, I would have imagined it would have taken a time machine to travel back to the years before WW2. Don't question the paradox involved with being for a group that doesn't exist yet, just roll with it.

Maybe? Good luck, though. Antifa's not a single group, or organized, or anything like that. Word's just shorthand for anti-fascist.

Pretty sure there's some earlier shots of the pole being empty, yeah. Have to dig around again to check to be sure, though, and most of my gaf just got spent.

In other news, the CBO has now released a report on trump's threat to stop paying CSR subsidies. Uninsured wouldn't change much over the long-ish run, but premiums do a nice rendition of skyrocketing and the federal deficit hops up a good 26 billion.

E: And nah, max, but catching most of the same thing. Much more clear, dead on shot showing all three poles.

It's a clear shot of an antifa flag, raised, right beside the county one, still flying. Fluttery blue eyesore for something on the ground and on fire.

Hopefully it's just an isolated incident, but if more things like that happen, then geeze, the antifa are just lowering themselves to the level of the people they were trying to fight, as far as public goodwill and sympathy goes.
... y'know, I think I may have figured out why the local news (outside of a specific source or two), haven't been paying much attention to it. Also why a lot of the supporting pictures where pretty poor in terms of clarity, angle, etc.

Namely, it looks a fair bit like every claim made about the flag being up, except it being up, was a flat fucking lie.

Heh.  No, the local cops were literally there and watching it happen. Reason they gave was that it was county property, and there were county folks on the premises, so their hands were inconveniently tied.
