Eh... bout as likely not, really. You don't necessarily need nukes yourself if you have someone willing to do the nuking for you. Gods know the eschatological nutjobs infesting our upper echelons would be happy to make sure we'd lend a hand if it came to that.

You'd also have some fun room to play with the implications of a few decades of more or less peaceful time off. This is not my beautiful house, this is not my beautiful wife~

and then a hydrokinetic bursts out from under your front yard and you have out of date pop culture to start things off with a splash ahahahahahahaha

Move Auschwitz up? Alt history is so much more chic than time travel these days. Can always go time travel and just plain ol' ignore the bullshit irrelevant to the characters. No plot holes to see here, folks, just the blob stuck in a interdimensional tear, pay no attention to the fat man behind the quantum time dickery. Cryogenics accidents are always fun, too. Random encounter with throwaway mutant #652 that happens to catapult people a few decades into the future or leave them stuck in a rock for the better part of a century or somethin'. Lotsa' stuff!

... alternately, from what I can recall of some of the x-men stuff, most of that years of background was explained away by him and xavier just kinda'... not doing much in the interim. Building up certain sorts of foundations and doing stuff in the background, but not really active. Things not really kicking off until they go full ideological split and then starting to ramp up until the main stage starts, somethin' along those lines.

Could have 'em waiting for a certain sort of critical mass in mutant population, not really having the human (so to speak) resources to push for their goals until a particular point.* Mountains of ways you can explain away empty years if you really feel like it, basically. Can either pick whatever's least disruptive to the rest of canon you're attempting to build or go hog wild and leave a billion different background plots hanging in the wind ala Star Wars or somethin'.

* And if you're looking for reasons why that point doesn't conveniently happen until the years you feel like basing your reboot, the X-men universe has like a thousand jackass-ex-machinas you can blame for it, and then either use as a background plot or main/side antagonist, or have hit with a rock and die right when your story starts up. The massive fustercluck that is marvel's material over the years means you got options.

Eh, I remember some of them being worth reading, but not in the same way as dune itself. As you say, some of it got really weird, talking giant god sandworm emperor thing. But surreality can be reason in itself to peruse.

... barely paying attention, but are you intimating that this is another case of people voting for someone who ran on the platform of fucking people, and then became shocked, shocked I say, when the one they voted in started fucking people?

Because it kinda' seems like that's at least been more visible in the last year or three.

It really kinda' does. Haven't had (m)any bombings I can recall near-ish to me, but arson (generally targeting black churches, historically, though I guess they'll get around to leaning more towards mosques, sooner or later) isn't exactly unknown.

Interestingly, Iran did sign that UN thingy wanting to ban nuclear weapons, though that's probably a choice loaded with politics (as it'd be a dig at the US) than actual policy. So, hard to tell if they're actually sincere in not really wanting to build nukes.
Eh... they probably are, but only insofar as they can maintain the possibility of breakthrough. It's kinda' the best of both worlds; the deterrent given by the possibility of nuclear retaliation if someone decides to go existential threat on 'em and the room to leverage not actually going through with getting the capability in negotiation.

It'd possibly be different if nuclear powers weren't habitually taking massive dumps all over their back yards, though. Most even remotely relatively sane powers these days (and, by and large, iran counts as that well enough) don't really want to have to deal with having the atomic hot potato sitting in their back pocket -- they'd much rather have the civil power generation and whatnot and call it a day, because gods know that's better for the budget in almost every situation they're going to actually encounter -- but when you have other nations that both have it and are causing messes around you/the world, it gets real beneficial to have it.

Or in other words, when you look around and see pretty clearly that the only folks that get much respect when it comes to MAD (i.e. avoidance of things like land invasions, overt domestic sabotage, etc.) are the ones that can join in, well... it starts looking like the only way certain other groups (*coughUSRussiaEUChinaetccough*) are going to stop being quite so casually willing to shit on you and everything around you is if you got the bomb. So you want the bomb, or at least the threat of having it, to keep other actors from going quite so far as they'd be otherwise willing to.

... and in today's edition of "words you never thought you'd string together", we have: "Auto-asphyxiation by means dermal excretion."

Aka drowning in sweat. Goddamn florida.

Probably about the same place any of the breakout (nominal, e.g. israel, or otherwise, e.g. probably iran) nations do? Whatever that place is, heh.

Maybe made a bit sketchier by how US actions in the last decade or so have put them in a pretty shitty situation, even just by what we've been doing on the other sides of their borders.

Cat bomb the land and laugh into the distance.

... alternatively, snakes! Some nice vermin primary dieting constrictors let loose can work wonders.

Eh... depending on the financing involved that can be about right. Couple thou' down payment, something similar monthly-ish going forward. From what I remember that kind of setup can pretty easily get pretty predatory, though. It'd also be in line if they were looking into a rent to own setup, which are sprinkled about here and there.

Could also just be referring to prep work/pre-move stuff, which can carry a nasty cost, occasionally.

That... sounds abusive as all fuck, SG. Not really sure if I got anything else I can say to that. Consider seeing if custody is a possibility?

If the kids are your worry and her behavior is like that, you've probably got decent odds providing you can get the right folks to testify, if everything else can get put largely in order... have a family member that's been wrestling with a roughly similar situation so far as that goes for a few years now. Major problem being the financials involved, unfortunately.

... any case, good luck. Stay safe. Try to remember that you being in that kind of relationship is probably pretty rough for your kids, too, so getting it to stop (which doesn't seem possible, from that and some of the stuff you've said previously) or getting you and/or them out can be important.

Nah, just in the same room with the smoker. Black outs take being stuck for a while longer (usually staying over for a few days with fairly prolific users), but on worse days even just being around for a little while starts wreaking merry hell on me. Hasn't ever hit that particular extreme from shorter term exposure, but it still trends hard towards making me feel like complete shit in very short order.

Most things smoke wise don't seem to bother me nearly as much (though I still tend to avoid it), but for whatever reason my lungs et al hate tobacco smoke more than basically anything I've encountered. There's mild asthma involved, but I haven't really needed or used an inhaler basically ever so *shrugs*

I haven't bothered questioning it too hard. Massive headaches and passing out in the very much non metaphorical sense are things I really, really prefer to avoid, and when there's a consistent and straightforward way to avoid it, well... gonna' do that thing, y'know?

Amusingly enough, I've actually seen a legit cuban before. Old friend of the family (I think they may be dead now, or soon to be) was a first or second generation immigrant, only really smoked cigars and managed to get some into the country. Dunno if they ever got around to smoking all of 'em, though. Never smelled it, but I saw it.

Remember the things (cigars) didn't smell nearly as bad as the more common deathsticks. Still gave a college try at very literally killing me, but didn't smell as bad.

... but yeah, don't smoke, personally. Most of the folks around me don't, either, though about half my immediate family spent a good few years addicted, and I've had friends or acquaintances that did about every normal sort of tobacco from snuff to loose leaf pipe smoking. Above and beyond just not having interest, somewhere like a decade and a half ago being around the stuff's smoke too much started causing headaches bad enough to cause me to straight up black out if I was stuck in it too long. So... yeah, heh. Just wanted to share I've ran into one of the fancy ones before :P

Probably? No clue, and pretty certain all the ones I've interacted with were legit copies. Either that or they actually replaced AVG's main site, its entire supporting company, and every at-the-time currently existent installation, and everyone's actually been using the fake one ever since.

Hell, it would even explain the steady degradation of the program. AVG hasn't actually became any worse, but it has been replaced by a changeling and no one ever noticed. Somewhere in the deep back woods of some desolate corner of the world, the one good copy of the program slowly becomes corrupted by environmental damage, soon to be gone forevermore.

... and now I need to turn off this bundle of LED stripe lighting I've been using as a flashlight and put out this pile of burning motherboards before something explodes or the poisonous fumes actually kill someone. Whoever thought IT ghost stories were a good idea needs to be brained with a keyboard.

Eh... I don't think I ever have on my own computers, but I have had to tear the goddamn thing out of a few others.

That said, I'm also pretty sure I recall the performance starting to go straight to shit around the same time the thing began showing up. So it's a good timestamp type thing.
