The upper level irga critters, iirc, though I forget the exact names. They can be kinda' nasty but they're usually not that bad for that point in the game, heh, though yeah, wide open area without a way to bottleneck is worst case scenario for dealing with them, usually.

Biggest thing probably was that irga critters are generally fire resistant, iirc, so you were likely not doing terribly much damage to them. Damage variety can be pretty important if you're doing something only moderately busted!

... anyway, my PoA note of today was finally getting the current last steam cheevo, landing a 1+ million damage hit. Did it the lazy way (master repulsion and some healing + green wyrm + autohotkey holding down space for a few hours), but it worked :D

E: There's a much less lazy way involving a specific item (crystal rod) and high willpower, too. Less sure about other ways of managing it, it's pretty hard to deal that much damage in one instance in the game.

Can't remember if it forked from zangband specifically, but the original incarnation was Pernangband, which switched over to Tolkien theming after mccaffrey started being a jerk about fanworks.

Quick check though, yeah, it was a pern themed zangband fork originally. Played it a ton back in the day, but never did win a run of it. Literally the only angband variant I've scored a victory in, despite probably several hundred hours playing them, was Furyband, which was a ToME2 fork, heh.

Yeah, public beta testing for lost land is supposed to start somewhere in the next few days. Beneath the Tides has been planned for... a long time. Trolls, spiders, naga, iirc were the major expansion campaigns I've seen mentioned as planned even before the orc one was released. Beneath the Tides is trolls/naga, spiders hasn't seen much public mention yet, that I've noticed. So there's probably at least two more coming after this next one.

Ok, just from googling it there seems to be nothing wrong with the term unbirthday. I've never even heard of it before. What's the deal?
Unbirth is a specific term of art, for... well, the turn of phrase is better or worse, but it's more like worse or worser :V

... I'd probably recommend just not looking it up, though. The term's descriptive enough to get the idea without having to see examples.

I think the last time one of those things (kids books with probably unintentional phrasing issues) hit as hard was Steig's The Amazing Bone. That one had bonus points in the art looking basically incredibly unintentionally skeevy pretty close from start to finish.

It's a fairly cute book all told, but good gods you could leave the cover and like half the art just alone and it'd still look entirely reasonable if you replaced the rest of it with appropriately stylized porn.

... also it was a caldecott winner, and there was at one point a short animated film for it made, featuring the fellow that would go on to be the voice of Shrek as the narrator.

Processed a kid's book today that had characters talking about unbirthdays as a plot point, and just.

That word has meanings beyond what was intended, ha ha holy shit book

Part of me regrets leaving the summary alone, on the off chance some kid sees it and then googles the term in question...

I've been playing a ton of Path of Achra lately. It's definitely a mechanically complex power fantasy, but while it's for sure in the traditional roguelike direction, the gameplay takes a lot of beats from the bullet heaven(/horde survival/vampire survivors style) stuff running around these days, too.

It's neat as hell in a lot of levels but there's also only like three or four buttons beyond movement that do anything (the only active abilities are prayers to your god, everything else is trigger based/passive), so if you're looking for something more fiddly than that it's probably a pass. The depth is in the character builds and positioning and whatnot more than firing the right sort of fireball at the right time.

... graphics are also very solidly retro, like 8 or 16 bit or something. No ASCII, but not much beyond it. It doesn't look bad at all, but it ain't shiny either.

Also still in early access, for all it's pretty feature complete and can be played through to the end. Dev just wants to add a few more character generation options (it's split between culture -- race, basically -- class and god right now, with 12/12/8 options) and some more abilities (there's currently 78, so it's not like it's lacking on that front, heh) and such. Flesh out the content a bit more, in other words.

It's not an issue of politically correct, though. Any particular major religion is going to be heavily fractured, and they all have significant parts of their demographic that's not hateful shitgoblins, so when you paint them all with one brush you're just. Not right, y'know? It's not an issue of being PC, it's an issue of taking too broad a brush to too diverse a polity.

Everything I've seen in life indicates islam's no worse than any other religion in the conditions it's a majority presence in (which, to be clear, is less praise of islam than it is condemnation of the general behavior of religious organizations). Problem's less that islam's particularly troublesome and more than religion in general needs to be kept well the fuck away from governing or significant secular power, 'cause it bloody never goes well when it isn't. If the turkish powers that be were predominately christian, or hindu, or buddhist, or what the hell ever, you'd pretty certainly be seeing pretty much the exact same cursed behavior.

Add in a dash of not wanting someone going through a shit time to get in trouble with the forum rules on conduct and you get people commenting like that, for better or worse.

... any case, best of luck mag. It's a shit thing to be going through, hopefully something will keep it from going completely terrible, or at least you get the opportunity to escape before the worst comes about.

I mean, one of the characters is a cowboy with a katana, and another is just flat out a ninja. It getting tagged with anime is fair :P

E: But yeah, it's pretty great. Haven't got the commercial version and I don't know if I'll ever actually play it vs anyone, but it's a treat to watch occasionally.

He can't run for governor next term (has hit the term limit), so it's a forgone conclusion on that front. Part of the reason he's fucking around as hard as he is, is because he's trying to lay some kind of screwed up foundation for whatever he does next. Why he thinks a failed presidential run will do much, I'unno, but deshitis has not exactly shown the greatest amount of foresight in the world so *shrugs*

Mitigation? How can one man wield such power, teach me senpai. All I know is pillows that are too high, and pillows that create a moat for my head to sink in.
The trick is to not just use pillows. The other part of effective bedding support infrastructure is blankets(/sheets/comforters/whatever blanket like constructs you prefer), which you can much more easily adjust the shape of to fit whatever need you happen to have.

Also helps to not use just one sort of pillow. My current nest has feather, foam, and more standard pillow filling, too, multiple of one or two of those sorts, but all in fairly substantially different shapes -- none of the pillows have the same sort of thickness/support/etc. Head/neck/back support isn't a static puzzle best solved with sort of piece! You're better off having as many puzzle pieces as you need to fit your particular situation, which changes from day to day.

In my particular case right now, I think I've got like... six pillows and about the same number of blanket/sheet/etcs. (one of which is weighted, but I mostly just use that as somewhere for the pets to lay that isn't the bedding I actually use for much). Only one of the blankets is generally used for warmth (I'm in frikkin' florida and it's approaching summer, more ain't needed), the rest is propping up feet or neck or arms or whatever, it all gets moved around as I do.

732
... neck? It doesn't effect the neck any, 'cept maybe a little if I'm laying on my side and that can be mitigated by pillows and whatnot.

733
I got one of these things. It's like a face mask, but softer than most and actually stays on your friggin' skull and warms your ears up t'boot.

Then I stick gun range earmuffs over them (the over part is important, makes it more comfortable to sleep with the hearing protection on), so it's quieter, too. Hard to sleep without either, these days...

I'm going to call you out on being too hyperbolic saying these are "intentionally lethal" design choices. There are not secret meetings in the auto companies saying "hahah wouldn't it be cool if we make the most dangerous cars we can? That would surely make us more wealthy!"
I've seen the commentary about preferring vehicles more likely to squish anything in runs into often enough I'm well sick of it, and design that accommodates that preference is plainly evident. There's not meetings like that, but there are ones that see specific demand for features that make things more deadly for people and go, "Let's get some of that."

Yeah, nuking bread is... sketchy. It works, ish, but it's finicky and often doesn't give particularly good results. Still, it does work, you just have to be careful with it.

So far as nevers in cooking go, though, if it doesn't actually make you sick/injured/dead/indicted or set your kitchen on fire, the thing to remember is that all things are permissible. Not necessarily advisable, but permissible, and good enough is good enough.
