General Discussion / Re: I like anime, do you like anime?
« on: June 20, 2017, 08:43:49 am »
... honestly, sometimes I prefer even a mediocre sub to a great dub. Occasionally I just don't want to hear goddamn english for a while, and I read quickly and comfortably enough there's little to no difference in comprehension and whatnot.

Incidentally, a similar phenomena is why I'm a lot more lenient with vocals in a language I can't understand, music wise. Somewhat harder to tell if or how badly they're screwing up, and often enough the actual content of the lyrics is an active detriment to enjoying the bit of music. There's times you're better off not knowing what the translation is or if what you're reading is actually accurate.

I'unno how many times it takes,  but I am pretty sure the more people say it, the less likely it becomes.

So please, please. Don't stop saying it. We haven't reached maximal self-destruction yet, amazingly enough.

That, more or less, yes. Movement patterns, changes in purchasing habits, all those sorts of things, can be used to track and predict or prevent all sorts of shit that would be really nice to the track and prevent. Like, that's the kind of data and analysis a seriously on the ball economists runs with for a decade or three and then starts near inerringly identifying market bubbles while they're forming instead of when they're about to pop, how a city planner/administrator notices part of the area they're working with is gentrifying, or starting to show signs of particular sorts of infrastructure wear or seeing spikes in certain sorts of malfeasance, how a disease or pandemic related critter can identify warning signs for something sketchy encroaching or herd immunity weakening or whatever, and so on, and so forth.

The data itself and the ability to track and analyse it as it changes is really damn good stuff for dealing with wide scale/macro concerns. Just need to start using it for that more instead of thumb sitting as corporate jackasses use it to shill robocalls.

7354
Eh... it's a helluva' tool. Just... easily abused. And to all appearances being pushed hardest by commercial interests, which, uh. Have certain incentives to do so. Real obvious it was coming, though. That kind of data collection and analysis is the logical extension of attempts to better understand sociology and psychology. We just kinda' need to step up our game for using it for good.

Not much to it, really. Banned critter from way back that had people claiming to be him for giggles, eventually the "We're all Pathos" thing decided to get stuck. The rest is pointless details and history. Just a joke, say I to me to pathos to me to I.

Assuming our society was still around and biology et al still more or less the same outside that little exploding issue, drug culture would probably be much more relaxed, if I had to guess. Also a lot more people would probably be drugged straight to the gills in order to avoid spontaneous existence failure.

Now, what I want to know, is what kind of explosive force are we talking here? Is megaton achievable or what? How much of a public safety/infrastructure risk is this hard proof of the existence of a malevolent god?

Pretty sure it was just registered voter stuff, i.e. no immigrants allowed, get out of our released to the wild personal information club. Also mentioned it before the rest of you *shakes fist*

I'm just going to content myself knowing the question of which party has the more shit IT has, for the time being, been settled.

... though as to ease of access for registered voter info. As with basically everything election related, iirc it varies by state, anywhere from easy to ]get out[. Also relatively sure most of the time getting them also gets record of you put on the books as doing so, which mitigates abuse a little. Somethin' like that, chunk of the problem about it is now not a single anybody knows who or who doesn't have it. Regardless of how easy access was before, it was still a failure and a half and a rather not!good thing.

Eh, you can try selling it. Practically it's borderline useless as this point, though, so there's not much reason to keep it outside of amusement or whatev'.

7359
Eh, yeah, that'd make it worse. I'd just really prefer we didn't test GOP spine and trump mettle when it comes to military action, ha.

7360
I mean... you can say that, and it was probably true last year, even. But are you really comfortable with thinking the RNC et al aren't going to look at the approval pivot that came with the missile attack and decide the odds are good?

7361
I do think you have a more valid concern, sluissa, but the reason I'm not 100% concerned myself is that sending in troops to Syria would be very unpopular, something Trump has to realize as he's criticized Obama for many of the same things he's doing now, and because trump has actually shown knowledge in a couple of his tweets (can't remember which; we went over it in my IR class last quarter) of the effect war would have on his popularity.
I'd be more comforted by that note if the GOP senatecritters weren't doing what they are with the AHCA, honestly. The claim they, trump included, really care about popularity is ringing a little hollow at the mo'.

E: ... also, the claim the trump realizing he's doing something he's criticized others for stopping him from doing it is a rather incredibly bad joke. That's applicable to just about everything he does, and it doesn't seem to be slowing him down much.

Slapped it in the ameripol thread, too, but still, bloody hell. Apparently the RNC decided it felt like nationalizing the majority of the sale of customer data industry. One of their data analysis type groups working during the previous election put just about everything except credit card and SSN on a publicly accessible cloud server, in a completely unsecured file. Approximately every single registered voter in the country (around 2/3rds the total population) now probably has most of their personal information floating around the internet.

7363
I think mostly because for most of that, trump was not POTUS. Also I don't remember much of us actually sinking/shooting down stuff over that mess.

In any case, so far as domestic news goes, it looks like we finally get to put to rest which of the political parties has the worse IT cockups. Behold! Apparently someone the RNC was working with managed to stick 1.1 terabytes of voter information in an unsecured file on a publicly accessible cloud server. Approximately every registered voter in the country has been potentially compromised :V

Thanks Trumpama! Or RNC. Same difference.

... well, you're getting closer, at least. Also I'm probably about to take a nap so whatever.

They didn't say what kind. Chain, plate, something else? With the normal extra layers or just the armor itself? Who the hell knows. Turns out the answer they were looking for was 50 lbs, so probably plate/field. Family that likes trying for it wanted me to look up the answer, and I was like. What. Did they say what sort of armor? No? Just "medieval"? The hell do you answer that besides picking something and guessing it was the one they were after?

The answer is you can't. Pick a number, see if it's what they want. You get one chance, hope you don't screw up.

And in today's round of radio trivia question, "What was the average weight of medieval armor?"

See if you can spot the WTF.
