General Discussion / Re: Things that made you go "WTF?" today o_O

Abnormally mild weather for june, though! Actually looks like the next week won't breach the 90s where I'm at. Humidity's likely to hit 100%, uh. Every day. But still!

... any case, if you haven't done it before and have a freezer, a bowl of ice in front of a breeze (fan, whatever) can help a fair bit. Makes the worst of it slightly less worst, for a bit.

7487
Smj, the only way the state of things doesn't look like a bonfire is if you've been standing in it so long your pain receptors have burned out. Soon you will have no more soft tissue and become near invulnerable in combat. Shit's been lit for a while now, it just takes a hell of a lot of fire to get certain sections of our political spectrum to admit things are, in fact, on fire.

Oh, there's no few that's as bad or worse. Your average batch of junk mail would provide a handful of examples, really, and if you felt like digging elsewhere you'd find plenty of businessfolk that can only be described as goddamn scum. Is what happens when you have strong attempts to limit efforts to curtail those kinds of shitheels.

... though it's probably a good idea to note that being on par with people who make a living draining the bank accounts of the elderly and infirm is, perhaps, not a statement of praise or notation of normality ethics wise for your actions.

E: Basically, don't mistake it. Trump is goddamn scum, particularly so far as business dealings go. But's he's only particularly notable scum because his inheritance let him get away with being scum to more people and people with more money than the more normal sorts tend to prey on.

I agree completely. Also that it's legislated that everyone's legal age is 17 or so, increasing 1 per year, regardless of how many years they've been alive. This may lead to the tyranny of the toddlers, but that's just a price you have to pay for a functioning democrazy.

Of course, he'd have to be successfully impeached or resign first. Nixon resigned just before the impeachment happened and Clinton got accquited by the Senate. What happened with Clinton was pretty blatantly political, even though it was technically the correct use of it.
Eh, one of the fun bits about this whole mess is we don't actually know that. The question of if the president is subject to criminal trial and whatnot while in office has never actually been explicitly and fully answered by the judiciary. Impeachment in the short term may be pretty unlikely, but the possibility of that question coming before the SCOTUS is one that's on the radar if not yet with a strong signature.

... in any case, trump has indeed said he'd be 100% willing to testify under oath. And that statement was not legally binding. It unfortunately doesn't mean much of anything, just like any number of things (taxes? Sanders debate? Top of head empty now but going on would almost certainly be easy if you cared to) he's previously said or promised and then reversed on. Fun times would be abounding if it actually happens, but I'd hold the party poppers for him being fully sworn in.

7491
Apparently? If they got the means to organize and interest in doin' it, more power to 'em, I guess.

7492
Well sure it's amateur. If what you're doing is flooding, there's not much reason to use much else for most of it, and it's probably cheaper than alternatives you could be doing something more nuanced with.

I don't think it quite works that way with the WH. I know they forced the Nixon Adminstration to give up the tapes, but I have no idea if they'd have to resort to a warrant.
They didn't with nixon because the white house handed the tapes over when the brass tacks finally came knockin'. If trump was more recalcitrant, I'm not sure which branch of our enforcement infrastructure would be rap tap tapping on the white house door, but I can't see any reason (save possible classified info issues, in which case you only send in minions with clearance) your normal procedure wouldn't happen. You'd still need a warrant before doing any pillage-y things that can happen when someone refuses a legally binding subpoena. Extra bonus points, you'd have precedent on what to do if this level of mess happens again :V

7493
Can they though? How exactly do you go about forcing someone to hand over tapes that may or may not exist?
Send in the popo, basically? You get yourself a warrant and set to ransacking until you find what you're looking for, or don't and declare their existence prefixed by the non (with whatever ramifications that may have for statements made previous). Not exactly sure who the cops would be in this case, but *shrugs*

Usually you just throw out a subpoena and your target either capitulates or finds themselves in a delightful legal hell of a mess, though. More extreme stuff isn't often needed, as far as I'm aware. At that point you're either innocent and handing over the whatever ain't no thang, or you're not and your ass is already cooked and refusing can only turn it from well done to charcoal. Seem to recall cooperation being one of those things folks like to leverage for plea bargaining, actually.

7494
... I'unno about that last bit. By and large what happens of that nature outside the court room/official case related communication/whatever stays outside said court room. Beyond that, trump could ridiculously easily just be lying, and respond to being under oath by taking out a stamp inlaid with "5th" and applying it directly to his forehead.

I mean... brexit can't claim a strong mandate of the british people, either. If that's going to stay on course may sticking around would be pretty even?

Kinda' curious what you'd count as going hard, though. The UK's not going to get better than norway at this point, ferex.

7496
Leaked, leaker charged, media/electorate has memory of goldfish. Shouldn't forget last one, probably. To a fair bit it was news worthy just because part of it was new. Something being reported before doesn't stop a lot of outlets from flailing about like it's breaking for the first time.

Yeah, some of the margins were pretty impressive. Apparently one seat got decided by like literally two votes? It was single digit, anyway, if I'm not misremembering already. Definitely one of the elections in recent history to kick that But just one vote! nonsense in the crotch the hardest.

7498
Eh, it's not so much weird as... very GOP, at the moment. They're pretty hyper defensive about... a lot of things, really. Kinda' what happens when you're trying to cover for a conman, heh.

Any case, it just hit me I had completely forgotten about the ohio thing. Anyone happen to be paying more attention and willing to summarize/mention what went down, there?

Hmm...it's good, but not quite an unprecedented landslide. I might hold a poll on if Laor should get "b" or "u" back.
U is the only choice, here. If you give them back the b they're just americans squatting in the UK.

7500
Wait are there seriously Anti-Comey attack ads?

That is incredulous!
Word choice aside, attack ads bloody nothing. Last I noticed like (at least) half the GOP politician roster was trying for some variation of character assassination against the guy. It's got bonus points for being hilariously inconsistent; they're shitting on him and his credibility regarding basically everything negative (i.e. accurate) he said about trump, and then doing an immediate heel-face backflip and crowing to the skies about how everything he said that could be pretzel-humped into being positive or relief-giving legality wise was truth as absolute as god's own piss. The cognitive dissonance being displayed is giving a pretty good go at being staggering.
