DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: November 16, 2014, 03:37:10 pm »
well currently i'm getting my military squad in bronze equipment, while lamenting the total lack of iron, flux, or coal. (plenty of Trees charcoal so metal industry is up) Sorta disappointed in the goblin, a whole siege on year 3 consisting of 2 skilled fighters (for goblins at any rate) and 4 recruits with no weapons. (not sure if this is what i should expect from my green skinned neighbor or they are insulting me, either way no freaking iron goblinite from them.) their is a group of three batmen with wooden weapons slaughtering everything that moves in the second cavern layer. (made for a interesting discovery, You have discovered a expansive cavern! then the camera snaps to a cavern carpeted with bodies.) Not totally sure how i will trade with the elves once i completely switch over to metal (zinc and Nickel based alloys since that is what we have The little casserite we have goes to bronze) since my metal industry is totally supported by trees. (do they recognize if a metal doodad is made with charcoal?).

Maybe some engraver or statue maker of some sort will remember the valiant piglet

unfortunately the brave little piglet didn't have a name, it was some live stock i am breeding in this fort. It would have been nice to be able to engrave something for it, or to make a memorial for it. i guess i can build another tower in its honor, something grand. with steel maybe.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The Vailant Piglet (spoiler alert)
« on: August 16, 2014, 12:58:45 pm »
The fortress of Rocktower was at war, not with the goblins, elves, or any other creature of nature, but something darker, whose evil has ran deeper than anything else in the world of mortal. It was a war they brought upon themselves, When the dwarves greed out ran the natural pace of the world and they dug for the forbidden metal at its core they unleashed a enemy few dare even mention, but the dwarves of rock tower were a clever If not ruthless lot, and devised a plan to combat the demons. through a sacrifice of a animal they would lead them into a trap were the dwarves would bring the very earth down upon there foe, and it worked.. with one exception. on the second strike the dwarves brought a piglet to the sacrifice. The piglet who would of lived life happy as a pet, now had his future ripped from him by the dwarves greed.
This brave little piglet understood his fate as bait and in a moment of nobility excepted it. He new of the evil that he would draw, of the trap the greedy dwarves had devised. He accepted it all, and when the demons charged up the adamantine shaft to feast on them did something in his nobility no one had planed for.
With a WarSqueal on his lips and valor in his heart this brave piglet charge out of the sacrifice niche and strait into the demon hoard. sending the demons in disarray and foiling the dwarves plans and machinations, and while this brave piglet died to the claws and flams of the evil clowns, and defied the dwarves hold on him, he will be remeber be remeber as a great hero of rocktowers untill all the towers crumble to dust.

OOC:

so heres what happened. i wanted the adamantine, so i went and devised several traps to defeat the clowns. the one i settled on was a cave in trap using natural stone and two bridges. i would lure the demons in using a animal i would have put in the little niche on the left using a pasture instead of a chain.
when the demons entered the hallway i would order the bridges raised use a cave in with natural stone to kill them and reseal the hallway (in case the right hand bridge got destroyed), clean up, re prep, and repeat until the clown car was thinned out enough for the military to handle. the first time (with a bunny) worked beautifully, killed a sizable amount of clown, bridge wasn't broken, flawless. The second time... was when i use the Bravest little piglet.
As soon as the demons entered the hallway, the piglet charged out of that niche right into them. this ruined the second go around, by stopping more demons from entering and to get crushed by the cave in, and put the first wave of demon in confusion (or that what i think happened, since he survived long enough to get some hits in), and forced me to fight the all the demons after the second wave with military.
While i did eventually defeat hell, it had cost me more casualty then i had hoped for.
Even though this piglet ruined my plan, i can not help but respect him for not only charging those demons, but defying my attemot at throwing his life away as a sacrifice.

Dear fey weapon smith

I'm sorry. i truly am. i knew i should have brought an anvil with me, i knew it but didn't to save points, and i fully take blame for you not getting that forge in time. but did you have to go insane right when the humans came into the trade depot with a anvil? I was so hopeful for you, i even had some steel rushed for you... so close, so close.

Regretfully yours

Dear brewer

Bug off. i know you rig last mayor election. i want the butcher back as mayor,  all he wanted was doors, but you? spears and catapult parts!
i can live with the spears, but catapults? i would launch you off a bridgeapult if you were not such a skilled brewer. now stop briding and blackmailing people with booze, and let my doorman have his mayor position he has earned.

Sinisterly

I was playing with masterworks gnomes and 4 frost giants snuck in to the dining hall. we had know weapons so i drafted everyone into the military and order to attack in hopes that the 80 some gnomes could get in 4 lucky shots. my fort ended with 80 gnomes dog piling 4 frost giants until they all starved, dehydrated, and in 6 cases go insane. While how it happened annoyed me, the mental image of some of the smallest masterwork race swarming the largest and keeping them locked down until the end just puts a smile on my face.

not exactly a major villian but i have always hated those small bandit groups or little gangs that even after you have ,
won hundreds of battles/ faced down gods/legendary fighting skills and equipment/other heroic feats and strength that make you way more powerful then said tiny group of bandits/pirates/other mook,
these small groups still charge at you with the intent of trying to beat you even when everyone should know that they have no hope against you and only real chance of surviving is running away.

could i get a dwarfed? wont be able to do any play but it looks like its going to be really intresting.

When designing a gas chamber. in its first test i learned 4 things about these things.poison gas FB don't have much range. That FBs with poison in its description dose NOT guarantee it will be a lethal poison,(vomit but thats about it), that i did not plan it to keep archer from just killing (a fairly useless) FB, and finally that my water purge system i had originally planned to clean the goblinite makes for a really good drown trap.

DF General Discussion / Re: What has DF taught you?

I learned about metallurgy.
that their is no such thing as a neutral or wild being, They are ALL hostile.
Goblins are not really that bad of a people and are quite reasonable to captured prisoners and slaves.
Dwarves should not be trusted with precision task like building a wall or pulling a lever.
Elves should be kept at a distance, its fine to trade, but no dinner invite, ever.
And just how much of a sadist and uncaring Overload (cough) Overseer i really am.

DF General Discussion / Re: What's your mandate?
« on: May 29, 2014, 12:19:21 pm »
Gold Furniture, Tables, statues, floors, bins, ect. i want it in gold! I mandate it!
also i forbid the export of gold, silver, platinum, or any mixer of said metal. throw jewels in that two.
if we are not going to when then by the circus we will at least be something worth conquering.
(i just really like making my stuff out of these, it just feels dwarven to me.)

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / adventure scouts
« on: May 24, 2014, 01:34:13 pm »
a little but ago in one of my first successful adventurers (successful by the fact that i actually started to understand adventure mode) i noticed something when i was adventuring through a mountain and i saw a ton of iron ores, bituminous coal and dolomite, and remember thinking how perfect this would be for a fortress. then i started to think about using adventures to scout out areas for fortresses!
now i realize you can't embark on mountains (unmodded), but this could be pretty useful for other reasons such as getting a feel for the wildlife of and area, to see if it has sand or clay, or for any number of story reasons. Thoughts?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What is your defensive method?
« on: May 24, 2014, 01:10:04 pm »
a mix of military with choke points, and trap hallways. generally 4 squads of 4, 1 axe squad, 1 hammer squad, 1 sword squad ,and  1 spear squad. 1 squad of 6 crossbows, not sure why i keep this squad at 6, maybe because it less heavy then ten on bolts or something. sometimes with one extra squad of 4 mixed infantry that acts as the guard(one time they were lashers). i then set their barracks at the end of a choke or trap hallway that i also make as the only entrance to the fortress. (trade depot being in a airlock that leads to the barracks). Keeps me pretty safe. the biggest weakness to this i see is me, but that is also the biggest weakness to all my forts so i don't plan for that.
