DF Modding / Help with changing interactions post-gen
« on: April 01, 2015, 12:47:31 pm »
This is in 0.34 by the way.

I'm trying to modify cats' bump interaction to raise dead dwarves. Not being able to do it isn't the problem, the problem is that it either doesn't work/the cats won't use it. It works fine in arena mode, just not in fortress mode. What do I need to do to fix it?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Problem - queen won't come
« on: March 14, 2015, 04:55:41 pm »
So 9 years ago, back in 157, I sent off around 400k U in worn clothing and bone crafts to the mountainhomes, expecting the queen to arrive. In 158, the outpost liaison arrived alone without the queen and Bastiongate became the mountainhome. In 260, the queen died of old age, a new king was chosen, and was promptly killed by goblins. The king's daughter became queen.

Is there anything, hacks or legitimate, that I can do to bring the queen to Bastiongate? I mention this because I just got a second artifact statue of her, which reminded me.

I don't think I can count on goblins to kill her again. They haven't attacked since 260 now that Urgerooms (the former capital) ships them tribute every month. I also don't want to retire the fort and kill her with an adventurer because retire-unretire fucks everything up.

A complete overhaul of Dwarf Fortress, starting from the bottom up. Currently it only modifies cavern creatures, but that will change.

For starters, it adds a lot more child states and pet tags. The rest is up to you to find out - telling you would spoil the !!FUN!!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / What are your dwarves obsessed with engraving?
« on: February 22, 2015, 09:21:38 pm »
Klayber or something the raven man taming the giant thrips in 69 for me. I find it on my crafts, my clothes, my walls, even an artifact or two. What do your dwarves put everywhere?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Forgotten beast battles
« on: February 07, 2015, 08:21:12 pm »
So, in the new version, FBs fight with other cavern creatures and even each other. This can make for some awesome scenarios.

A few weeks ago I had a fort that was doing pretty well, population around 150, legendary military, ongoing domestication program, large fortress. In the caverns there was an FB that couldn't get to me, a theropod (humanoid) with webs and an iron pick it had gotten off of a miner who had climbed down to it earlier. Then a new FB arrived, an iguana with deadly dust. I sent my military after it, thinking it won't be so bad.

Wrong. The dust caused unconsciousness and suffocation. My military arrived one by one, fighting bravely for a while before succumbing to the poison. The crossbowdwarves fared little better. The beast slowly made its way toward the staircase and my fort. I was bored of the fort and decided to let it come.

Meanwhile, the other FB had somehow managed to make it up into my stairwell, getting in though some crack in the walls or what have you. It spewed webs, killing everyone and everything in its path. My four legendary swordsmasters were obliterated in seconds, each decapitated with one swing of its pick. But the military did not die in vain - by the time it reached the fortress proper, it was crippled, scarred, and had lost the deadly iron pick. But the beast continued the killing in the bedrooms while the other beast hung out in the caverns.

After a while I was down to three dwarves - a baby in the caverns orphaned by the iguana, a child in the mines, and a legendary miner that I had locked in the butcher's shop. The iguana killed the baby. The child got tired and decided to go to bed, passing the theropod and dying quickly. The theropod stood gloating over he fallen child's corpse, thinking it to be the last dwarf, secure in its victory. All that was left was the miner.

But then the iguana decided to walk up the staircase, slowly making its way to the fortress proper. It ambled down the hallway to the bedrooms. It turned a corner and saw the other forgotten beast, standing over the corpse of a dwarven child.

Webs flew. Dust spewed. The beasts tangled in mortal combat. Blood soaked the hallways as each beast sought to maim or kill the other. But in the end the web-spitter triumphed, the striking down the tangled iguana with a punch to the skull. But then its throat seized up. It fell over gasping, then died.

I couldn't believe it. The fortress was saved! I let the miner out, enabling all duties. He buried the bodies, cleaned the blood, and never cracked under the pressure of everyone he knew and loved dying. I abandoned the fort, the lone miner setting off on his own, to spread the tale of Earthtramples.

So what stories do you have of forgotten beasts fighting?

DF Community Games & Stories / Gis Moltenkey's Hunt
« on: January 08, 2015, 03:45:42 pm »
One year ago, the middle son of the True Flame of the Basic Merchants was kidnapped by goblins. No one could get close enough to the dungeons to reach him. So they sent me. Gis Moltenkeys, beast hunter.

The True Flame gave me free choice of all the weapons and equipment in the keep, so I swapped my old copper impish crossbow for a fancy steel one. I also grabbed a good steel dagger for emergencies. After that it was almost noon so I set out to the nearby forest retreat to sleep. The elves gave me some funny looks as I climbed up into the top of a tree to sleep, but none of them said anything.

In the morning I set out west. I will go north around the mountains and then northeast to the goblin fortress. But first, my supplies are running low, so I need to locate some game. For a while I see nothing but weasels and ravens, but eventually I find something worthy - some roosting giant magpies. From my vantage point in a tall ginkgo, I shoot one of the magpies. Three shots is all it takes and the huge bird gives in to pain. I approach, scaring off the rest, and slash the bird's throat with my new knife. Once it bleeds out I collect my intact bolts and butcher the beast, taking the heart and liver. The rest is too big to carry. I start out again, spending the night in a tall tree. I have never seen these "bogeymen" that everyone talks about, despite all my nights alone in the wilderness. I believe it adds to my reputation.

I set out west again, hopping a small ravine. My claws dig into the frozen clay easily and I pull myself up. A little later a pack of giant dingoes attacks me, hoping to make a quick meal of a small creature. Evidently they have never seen a fire imp before, because as soon as they got close, I engulfed them in a cloud of flames. I escaped as they burned to death. After a few hours of walking, I see the towers of the goblin settlements in the distance. I sneak around some goblin patrols and enter the goblins' trenches. Night is falling, so I sleep in the bottom of a tower. They won't think anything of a small pile of snow-covered rags sitting in the corner.

I woke up as soon as dawn touched the horizon, the sun shining through the tower's ice walls. I climbed to the top of the tower, slitting the throat of a sleeping goblin and taking some of his flesh. I walked a short distance east to the main building, shooting the guard at the entrance and sneaking past the rest. The dungeons' entrance is nearby, so I sneak down the stairs into the murky depths. I checked cell after cell, but they were all empty. Guards were killed from the shadows with bolts and fire. Eventually, I came to a dead end and had to turn around and go down another passage. Finally, I found him. He was in a cell by himself. I turned back, went up through the many levels of winding passages and reached the surface.

We left the building, passing the corpses of goblins I had killed. He did not shy away from the bodies. The way back was uneventful. With a second man to watch my back, no beast could ambush us. I returned to Swordshower and presented the child to his joyful mother. You know, I never thought to ask the kid his name...

DF Modding / Old Terrors
« on: August 08, 2014, 07:02:41 pm »
I want to know all the things from old versions people used to be afraid of. I'm going to make a mod that restores them to as much of their former glory as possible. Here's my list so far:
  • Elephants
  • Carp
  • Giant mosquitoes
  • Giant sponges
  • Badgers/wolverines
  • The old demons

And I'm not even hungry. This is great! For reference, the corspe is a goblin and I'm a kobold.

DF Community Games & Stories / Gulruris, the Greatest Thief
« on: July 10, 2014, 08:32:42 am »
Gulruris, the Greatest Thief

Gulruris was a kobold who lived in the Gloom of Communions, a cave right next to the southern edge of the world. It was very cold, but the kobolds that lived there had adapted to the chill and had lived with it almost all their lives.

Gulruris was born into a large litter, where he never really stood out. But he had a dream: to make the greatest theft of all time. One day, he put on a backpack, picked up some chopped yak liver, and left home.

DF Modding / A civilization that has no genders
« on: June 06, 2014, 07:17:05 pm »
As the title says, I'm looking for the raws (creature and civ) for a civilization with no genders that still generates at worldgen. I'm hoping to learn from it to develop my own mod.

DF General Discussion / The Most Interesting Dwarf in the World.
« on: June 04, 2014, 03:01:18 pm »
Some say he was king of the dwarves. Twice.
Others say he was taken captive by demons, but managed to escape.
Still others say he fought a cyclops with his bare hands and only received a broken nose.
The only thing that can be said for certain is that Zefon Galleyblue is the most interesting dwarf in the world.

Post your interesting people!

As the name implies, Uroruralir is a succession fortress using my mod, Blood for Armok. If you haven't seen it, check it out as the link is in my sig.

If this were a regular succession fort, I'd be worried about being a soldier.
But imps are hardcore.

Introduction

After the goblins released the demons, everything went to shit. The demons are exceedingly violent and unbeatable in combat. Any nation that goes up against them is doomed to destruction. Most nations have managed to keep the peace with them, but the animal men, without the ability to make treaties, are all but wiped out. They throw themselves against the demons, sacrificing tens of thousands for only a few hundred. But there is hope. The demons, unable to stand the surface, die exactly a hundred years after they emerge. They also murder each other frequently, proving that the only thing that can kill a demon is another demon.

This fortress is being founded as the last bastion of impkind against the demon scourge. May it never fall.

"Flame, are we there yet?"
"Actually, yes. The coastline matches the map's image."
"Finally!"

DF Modding / Randomly generated demon raws
« on: May 23, 2014, 03:02:43 pm »
Does anyone have any randomly generated demon raws? I need them so I can see what kind of tags they have in common with each other so I can make some cool demons of my own. Also, if someone knows where to get a program that can open .sav files that would be even better.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Sentient bones and leather
« on: May 12, 2014, 04:08:03 pm »
One of my senior adventurers is using the Dwarf Chocolate mod, which among other things adds a lot of adventure mode recipes (ex. making clothing, bone carving). He has a ton bones form sentient creatures that he found in titan shrines and such. He also has several leathers from each sentient creature except kobolds. My question is, what should I do with all this? I already have a full set of sentient leather clothing.
