It's gotta be underneath the right center square to work, and more than 4/7 full.

Look for the spot where every single one of your dwarves is now going to head to and drown in as the entire fortress drops everything to go loot the corpse?

Yeah, if you don't have an anvil you need to buy one. Once you have one, you can churn out three or four in a few minutes and that should do you for a while. Buy it and some other junk to get the merchant to weight or if he's not a dwarf you could always just rob him.

Anvils are, like, two iron bars at any forge. Takes a bit of a production chain, but should be doable fairly quickly on about any map.

You can help the merchant a bit by buying up any heavy cheap crap he's got for load balancing.

Hit i, pick a convenient hole or cliff, make it into a Garbage Dump. Look at all the rocks you want ditched and hit D to dump them.

Or build a mason's shop and turn the rocks into money and useful things.

Or build a catapult and chuck them at eagles.

Or build a stockpile.

Or make a lot of walls and structures.

Awesome. Kinda a letdown that my crazy Mount Doom precipice forge can't become an unstoppable war machine, but at least that's something I can do. If this works, I will dedicate the next hapless peasant I send to feed the dragon to you.

Oh Christ one has done nothing but drink and sleep in over a month. If I recruit him and make him fight the epic dragon sitting on top of the mountain, will it look cool?

DF Gameplay Questions / Blacksmiths and Magma Forges?
« on: November 02, 2007, 06:42:00 pm »
Okay, after devoting a full season to mining and construction and losing half a dozen trained dwarves to FIRE IMPS EVERYWHERE OH GOD, I've finally got a huge awesome magma forge/smelter system built directly over my volcano. Only now my bloody ingrate blacksmiths refuse to go anywhere near it. I know it works, I've gotten an axe and about ten iron bars out of it (over the course of an entire year), and the area's getting accessed constantly by Imp Patrol and miners stacking my huge, useless ore stockpile next door so it's not like it's inaccessible. Even with all other jobs turned off they'd sooner sit around with no job or wait for something to pop out of the farm than touch the factory. What the hell is going on? What can I do to make them work? Can I, at the very least, appoint a Hammerdwarf to beat them senseless day and night until they stop slacking off so I feel better about the whole situation? I don't want to have to go back to charcoal-based production again, I don't have any coal mines handy and only have enough wood to supply my carpenters, and I'm sitting on an awesome high-efficiency metal factory so sticking with stone is out of the question.

Also, FYI I've noticed that units stationed over volcanos for a long period of time spontanteously combust. If you want to guard the place, give your troops a patrol point that's a few squares out of the heat so that they'll take a break once in a while and not explode.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Come goblins, come!
« on: November 02, 2007, 06:46:00 pm »
If you're doing a goblintown invasion their AI is kinda broken, they just sit there until they see dwarves. I don't know if sieges have the same issue or not; the computer has a really hard time locating your fort's boundaries unless you include some external doors. Try that or send someone out to kill 'em and they'll move, maybe you can get 'em to chase you back to your defenses.

They don't have any problem with hills, which are basically the same thing. Should do.

Haha I just got a Legendary miner and it really is 100% stone generation. My mines look insane right now.

Back when I was first starting out I'd just pick some outside area and designate humongous 20x40 or so plots of ground as stone stockpiles, and that's even easier now, but it's a huge timewaster. By the time you have Great Miners who are leaving behind stones 90% of the time you should have a squad of masons turning those rocks into money and structures almost as fast as they're produced. In the early game any stockpile you could seriously use is going to be so small that you should have no trouble finding an area and the dwarves'll move the debris out of the way (occasionally) anyway.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: "reclaiming" without reclaiming?
« on: November 02, 2007, 06:55:00 pm »
How does reclamation work now, anyway? I don't see it pop up in my start game options; do you have to find your old fort again to do it?

Yeah, any or none or all and then some might appear on any map, just like critters and trees and goblin hordes and all the rest are up to chance now. My first couple had nothin' interesting at all, just flat terrain and boring rocks and no horrible evil beasties anywhere, and then I got to my most recent location which has a chasm, a volcano, some wierd circular bottomless pit thingy, a creek, what looks to be an abandoned mine full of evil doom bats, and a frickin' dragon sitting at the top.

If you wanna be really lazy, my seed is 3648620896 and the thingy that I take to be the coordinates reads 1053-15445.
