DF Gameplay Questions / Re: my first (real) siege
« on: February 12, 2008, 05:08:00 pm »
had an idea to maybe make being behind fortifications better

what if instead of fortifications I build pillars in formatsion like this

++++++++++++++++
0+0+0+0+0+0+0+0+

so that my marksdwarves would shoot from the spaces and the chanes of them geting hit would be reduced due to the bolts hitting the pillars

would that work?

actually it was a wall with a rampart and fortifications 1 level up, but it didnt really help, all my marksdarfs manning the ramparts were completely destroyed

DF Gameplay Questions / my first (real) siege
« on: February 10, 2008, 07:58:00 pm »
well, my fort got pretty much annihilated after this siege, the first one I went up against was just like a squad of macemen.

now i went up agains 2 squads of macemen and a lot of archers.

THE ARCHERS JUST RAPED EVERYTHING.

I had some big walls with a few towers in them, but I only had like 3 marksmen waiting behind fortifications
I thought fortifications made it harder for them to hit you from their side. But they came buy and swept everytihng behind a fortification away.

I even had a moat around the walls (like right beside it) plus a retractable bridge was there so they couldnt get it. Would it have been better if the moat was a fair distance away?

how do you deal with archers, my close combat guys would charge and just get annihilated. Is there a better way to fortify for marksmen, does higher ground make it harder to hit you?

basically it got to the point where I drafted everyone and charged them and my 100 pop fort went down to 30 by the end of it. about 10 guys went on a tantrum WHILE THERE WAS FIGHTING GOING ON.

so as you can see this is very hard for me to figure out. Main problem is the archers. any advice?

thanks

lever room with a door

make the dwarf military and command him into the room, lock the door

presto now all he can do is fall asleep or pull a lever

(unfortunately falling asleep still happens and it can really ruin you if your not prepared)

no to this. How do i use the catapult, can it fire over a wall? does it have to be high up?

will it fire on guys not in a seige? I was trying to get it to fire at an advancing goblin ambush party, it was facing the right way and I set it to fire at will and there was a guy manning it, but it wouldnt fire

and how far is the range?

quote:
- How do you assigns tasks specifically to dwarves?

this one I think is a good question to know. You cant exactly tell specific dwarves to do something.
But its good to know this
if you assign a job and someone has the skill to do it, it WILL get done (eventually)
if you notice its not getting done its because one of 2 things happened. 1 - the dwarf (or dwarves) who can perform the job is doing other jobs and is curently too busy to do the one you want. Or 2, you don't actually have a dwarf who can do that specific job

Any dwarf can do anything, its just they have to have it set in their labour preferences, but the lower the skill, the slower they will work and the crappier the quality of (insert item here) will be.
