The modifer is variable. I'm not sure on what it depends, can be weird, but it means sometimes you can ally a major power despite being at war with an OPM.

And ... another failure. Started decently, but had a few wipes when thin men and floaters began to appear and everything went to hell afterwards. Couldn't succeed a single mission after this.

Well, failed a game again (most nations were already in panic as I was researching carapace, 2 nations had left). I guess I'm just terrible at this game. What frustrates me the most is that I don't really know what I could do better. Sure, I do some mistakes from times to times that kill a soldier, but nothing that feels very important, yet I fail in every classic game that I tried. Maybe it has something to do with the managing part, I dunno.

How to save a VIP ? Seriously, I remember it being easy as pie, but now, aliens seems to shoot at it first, and when 5 thin men rain down from the sky, I can't kill them all, and they inevitably kill the VIP with their crazy accuracy (failed 3 VIP missions that way).
Don't rush the VIP.   Enemy spawn on the VIP's progress if I remember correctly..  Set Overwatch, move VIP, watch thin men die, move troops forward.  Rinse and Repeat.
I'll try that. I actually used to try to get the VIP as fast as possible out of here, so it seems weird that spawns are based on that.

And thanks for the other answers. Though, anyone knows whether special missions can still be done if one of them is failed ? I might restart my game anyway.

Actually, IIRC, if a soldier dies, you can steal the medals and give them to another guy.
So, once you have 6 medals of each, it's nearly useless ?

Medic Wilson is in critical state, but can't be stabilized (cause he is carrying the medic kit). One enemy left, so if I kill it before he dies, he'll survive.
The last enemy is a seeker. "Stealth mode", disappear for 2 whole turn, and shoot plasma just before Wilson dies (I didn't even know Seekers could shoot plasma). It gets shot and explode just after, but the medic is already dead.
RIP Wilson 'Smokes'.

So, bought Enemy Within with the last sale. After trying again a Classic Ironman (and I'm quite failling at it too), I'm wondering about some stuff :
What happens if I lose a special mission (say, an Operation Slingshot mission ? I also failed one with a french military convoy that has been attacked, don't know if it leads to anything) ? Does the operation chain continue or not ?
Medals are destroyed if the soldier you gave them is dead, I assume ?

And, any general advice on classic difficulty ? I know it's kinda too hard for me, but when the game went out, I played Normal, and it became too easily too quick (hell, didn't even finished the game), I wish there was a middle difficulty, so I'm trying Classic.

Also, the game is quite more polished now. The "make items disappear from anyone not in the team" button is crazy useful. Plenty of little stuff (nice options) that are really nice, though, should probably have been in the base game.

I've started browsing their realm adding up the levies in my head, but that's slow *and* inaccurate.
Click on someone's (anyone in the enemy realm will do) portrait and go to realm view to see the total levies of the top liege. It's one of the three buttons near someone's dynasty shield. The levies shown there is way higher than their actual levies, but if your total levies is higher than theirs you probably have more troops.
Not that much. At least it's pretty accurate for what I can levy.
The ledger also has an "independent realm size" entry, so you can see how your army stacks up versus everyone else.
Hm, possible that's what I've been using.

Found an apex lab. There was a maze with tons of tesla spikes. After many deaths, I finally go through ... wait, I've seen this before. The maze was forming a loop :(

You could ignore them and conquer France?  And then maybe the HRE.  Alternate between holy warring weak states and then invading big ones, works every time.  Then once you're so big they stand no hope of stopping you, then worry about finding a CB.  Just make sure your armies don't drop too far beneath the other guy's, or he could attack you.
I could, but I'm not really interested. It'd be really easy (France is controlled by Welsh, has 6k army). The biggest catholic kingdom is Lotharingia/Italy, at 11k soldiers atm. It wouldn't even be a challenge (and Tulunid, the sultan of Egypt, invaded Aquitaine btw, though he lost Egypt to the Abbassids). That wouldn't be a problem to invade the catholic world but I want to usurp the Arabian Empire, and I'm only at 54% (need 81%). Abbassids has the other 46% and there's 124 counties. I'd need to take 34 provinces from them to usurp the title, but I only have single counties cb (which are not really worth fighting a war over). Once I have a title, the rest of their realm will implode, since there's plenty of dukes and not a king title.

Welp, my genius son got assassinated by one of my wife (one of his mother in law), so I guess I'll let my strong son be the heir, especially since he is a charismatic negotiator (not the best, but nice). Though, I'm facing an issue, as in, the Abassids. I'm the Ummeyyads trying to reconquer their empire, but as of right now, the Arabian Empire dejure is evenly split between me (Mauretania, Africa, a chunck of Syria, and a chunck of Arabia) and them. In addition, I have Spain, and they have Mesopotamia. I can beat them (we have around the same army, 50k each, biggest realms in the world, Persia and Byz are third and 4th with 20k, though Seljuk is coming with 40k soldiers), especially with retinues.
But I don't have a cb (other than a few dejure, and conquest) and they have subjugation. I want to smash the empire, but if I attack, vassals will start loving the emperor (defending vs foreigners). What's the best way I could cause them to implode ?
