Or at least, castles. Cities are pretty easy to assault.
Yes, but big cities have plenty of LI and A, which are good for skirmish, so it can incurs big losses for assault (I sometimes lost more soldiers by assaulting a 2k city than a 2k castle).

Well, dunno, Strong has very good bonus in addition of the +2 martial : +10 to vassal opinion, + 2 health, + 10% fertility, and +1 diplo which are very valuable (especially health). I guess I'll let my oldest son be the heir for now, and look for their education to see which is better.

If only there was a "Strongest heir wins" style. So you try and get a genius each generation and, since he has a +5 bonus and hopefully good education/stats, he should be "strongest".
I'm pretty sure that's muslim open agnatic right there for you. With more blood (and less kinslayer !).

On genetics : Strong or Genius ? They're nearly equal for me, so I don't really know how to choose.
Genetics are too random to bother trying to get. The chance of spreading is really small, something like 20%, so just go for whoever you like.
I mean, if I have a son which is strong, and one which is genius (and one quick, but I won't bother with him), which do I choose as an heir ?
And yes, I had 3 'gifted' sons, as a regular guy (but had strong or genius concubines).

So, I just started the game (a friend recommended it to me). I'm not too far yet, I have a copper armor and that's pretty much all. I'm trying to build the beacon, but I haven't found a single silver ore yet. I've also met several guys that had assault rifles and snipers ( :'() though even if I killed him, I didn't loot it (sure it was a crappy assault rifle that did 4-5 damage per hit, but that would still have been nice).
Does anyone have tips to move on, or should I continue mining until I find silver (and more iron) for the beacon ?

So, I had 3 sons. The first is a thrifty clerk, meh traits, craven just and greedy. The second is a genius, kind, charitable, just, brave, zealous, so one of those ideal character you get once in a while. It lacked only the grey eminence education to be one of the best character (but his mentor was a diplo education). The third son is meh all around, still young.
I'm a muslim ruler, so I can kinda choose who will inherit. Alas, I was thinking "ok, I'm just gonna conquer this county, bethroth my second son and then land him. I died 2 days before the last siege ended.
Lesson learnt : as a muslim, always land your genius son. Also, it's kinda depressing to be the ruler, brother of a genius (true brother, not half !) and my heir is him. I'm considering 2 options : imprison all my brothers while they're still young so that I can kill them if rebels vassal, or put him my spymaster and hope the stab is clean.

There's indeed a critical mass. I'm trying to reproduce the Ummayyad muslim empire (as the ummayad from cordoba), but I'm pretty sure I won't, because that's too huge (al andalus, arabian empire and persian empire), travel is slow in North Africa, and vassals are strong.

It's mostly unlocking mechanics that are a bit different, so you're better off playing the vanilla game before. If you like it and want to try something different in the game, then DLCs are interesting. I'd recommend Legacy of Rome though, it unlocks retinue, but it's not mandatory.
Ever tried playing without retinues? Its mandatory. You just don't know it yet.
I did. It's not, as long as you don't have a huge empire (more than a dejure empire, except byz and arabian empire). They are much better indeed, but you can go around.

It's equally hard to believe that the AI has such a massive stockpile of admin points and still keeps up with technology. What if they don't take stability hits, but instead lose a percentage of their admin points?
It's really easy to have too much monarch points as a western nation. The AI wastes a lot of them, but if you don't, you'll be at 999/999 most of the time. Seriously, as a western (or even eastern, hell, I was leading tech by 1-2 with PLC), it's harder to find where to spend your points than getting some. Western have rich lands (advisor), low cost tech, lots of universities from the start, neighbor bonus.
It shows a lot how the AI wastes his monarch points with other tech groups : you can be 3-4 tech level in front of the AI, because he'll waste it on getting stab to 2-3, stuff like that. The AI is just programmed to have a reserve, because it can't plan ahead.

Ok, this game just went full crazy. The abbassid badshad (jewish) inherited the sunni caliphate from one of his vassal. So the religious head of the sunnis was jewish. And when I declare holy war on him (I wanted to unland him to be able to claim the sunni caliphate), all other sunni sultans (Africa, Egypt, Persia and Arabia) refused to join (religious head modifier  :'(). I got my ass handed to me in the desert (at the border africa/egypt), since I had 2 split stacks of 12k to avoid attrition. Anyway, I lost that war, assassinated a dozen abbassid badshah to cause unrest and lo ! there was a survivor sunni abbassid. Meanwhile, there was a huge civil war still in that empire. So, I won't get the sunni caliphate any time soon, but at least we'll have jihads and MA and stuff.
So, get back to Andalusia, I kinda want to grab the Africa kingdom. Wait, what's that ? It's a republic now. Yup, Aghlabid Sultanate is a republic now.
On a less crazy note, a Capet rose to the throne of Aquitaine (ok, it's kinda like, half of Aquitaine, the other half being split between East Francia and Bavaria, but it's already a step !).

They actually don't. A nation with 3 stability declaring war on you with a peace treaty, and if they have no CB, and if they have a marriage, it will result in them still having 3 stability. Go ahead. Invoke one of these scenarios and tell me I'm wrong.
Tag switch and you'll see that their adm reserve points will take a hit. They will just be back up to max stab in no time because it's quite high priority and they always have a sizable reserve of monarch points. Or you can even cheat your way in getting the 'ai' bonus (got it once thanks to a bug), and declaring war with no cb will still give you stab hits, despite having every other advantage an AI has.
You're inventing some sort of conspiracy, while the devs have explicitly stated in which way the AI cheat, and it's not one of them.

No, it's not me. I'm the sultan of Andalusia and Mauretania, still Sunni. But now, the arabian emperor and sunni caliph (yes ...) is jewish. There was a duke that had the sunni caliph, and I thought that if I killed him and all his dynasty, I would have the option to recreate the sunni caliphate, but instead, the abbassid emperor inherited it. So, kinda weird atm.

Holy shit.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Also, no idea how I've inherited that oman duchy in the middle of nowhere.

On the matter, does anyone know if a caliph/pope/religious head can call a crusade/jihad/great holy war on its liege (or even vassal ??) ?

Nope, the byz are still orthodox, Jerusalem is still held by shia, etc. It's a bug, it's been reported, but it's just really really annoying.
