DF Gameplay Questions / Obsidian not showing on stone menu?

First, there is no natural obsidian on my map at all.  I created a obsidian farm which I have used to create some obsidian.  Problem being I can't do anything with it as it is considered an economic stone, and when trying to find it in the stone menu, it is not listed.  I see it under the stock screen fine.  This a bug, or am I just not looking in the correct place?

As the title says, wondering if there are tricks or tips on getting a more variety of layers.  I am looking to generate a world that is fairly flat (since I hate having a hilly embark) and trying to maximize ores/gems by having a variety of layers.

DF Gameplay Questions / defeating cave swallow men?

I was attempting to trap them, but it seems they magically avoid the traps, I guess because they are fliers.  Due to the military having so many issues I have not been able to equip them with armour to protect them in fighting them so I need a way to trap them.  Any way to mod out the flier tag so that they will be trappable?  The raws are a bit different now and I don't know how to do it.

DF Gameplay Questions / magma pumpstack

I am attempting to create a pumpstack that goes down 24 levels to bring my magma to the surface.  So far I have been successful except for one thing.  After the initial powering on of the stack, it shoots magma out are a decent rate, but quickly trickles down and doesn't seem to be moving magma much at all. I have atributed this to the nature of pumps, and how they pump out liquids faster than they can replenish.  My question is is there another way to go about doing this, or maybe do I need to build another stack?  The goal is to flood the entire outside edge of the embark area with magma.

as the title says, i was doing some world generating in hopes to find good flat locations to embark on.  Here are 3 spots that i think are pretty nice. They don't contain a whole lot of features, but some of them can be extended to include things like chasms, etc.  All 3 contain atleast HFS, flux, and magma.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / flat embark area?

It seems to me, after reading post after post of world seeds and embark spots, that people seem to really like having large cliffs and z levels.  I find that it bugs the hell out of me.  Finding magma, HFS, rivers, and any of the usual things that people want when embarking is rather easy for me, but the real problem is finding a spot that is actually flat, or atleast close to it.  My question is is there anyone else like me, who would rather embark on a nice flat area with all the usual features, and if so, does anyone have any world seeds to share for such a thing?  I know i long for the day when there is some sort of map editor where you can place features exactly where you want them so finding a spot to embark on doesn't take the 2-3 hours that it does now, atleast for me.

DF General Discussion / finding locations of sites with legends?

I was browsing through the legends, and found a cave inhabited by a dragon and some other creatures.  Problem is i don't know where this cave is located on the map.  Is there a way to pin point the location so i can embark there?

DF Modding / Map editor possible?

After trying and trying to find a nice spot to play on.  It occured to me that what was needed was just a simple map editor.  It would allow one to choose a starting size, features, civs nearby, ect.  Would require the reading and writing of world.dat i believe, but should be possible.  I just hate that 99% of any world i generate is useless to me.

DF Modding / ambushes and sieges question

I am wondering if there is a way to turn off ambushes, but leave in sieges.  While i find sieges to be fun, ambushes are nothing more than a pain in the ass.  While i am at it, could anyone explain the actual difference between the tags babysnatcher, sieger, and ambusher? Are there any others? Thanks

DF Modding / Making buildings require more materials?

In an attempt to find a way to help clear out excess stone, and to just make things a little more realistic, i was wondering if there is a way to mod the amount of materials workshops take to build.  I took a look into the raws but couldn't find a reference to any workshops so my guess is no, but wanted to make sure.  Thanks

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / aquifer pumping?

Has anyone had success with pumping water out of the aquifer? i am curious if it is possible, it could lead to the perhaps finding of bedrock underneath.  I kinda like starting with an aquifer, but the lack of stone really is bothersome, and if we could pump out the water and keep digging down, that could smooth things over.

Well i finally got a good location, has magma and a river, and my plans now are to start an obsidian mining operation.  Trying to figure a way to channel the magma and water to meet, and make me obsidian, but it doesn't seem to be working to well for me, i tried making one long channel with each meeting, but then it just creates a block of obsidian in the middle.  Also the magma seemed to destroy my floodgate made of stone once i had opened it.  So i was wonderinf if anyone had any ideas on a good way on going about doing it.  Will be glad to add it to the wiki.

DF Gameplay Questions / cleaning out cages?

I have several cages that are empty of animals, but instead have left over bones from taming said animals.  The cages are otherwise empty save for these bones.  Problem is the dwarves won't use these cages for anything since they are not "empty".  I have tried to figure a way to get rid of these bones but i can't seem to do it.  Is there someway i can clean these cages of the bones and make th em usable again? Thanks

DF Gameplay Questions / Sieges under population 80?

I am curious as to whether sieges are possible to get if your population is under 80.  The wiki states that in order to get sieges, your population must be 80 but i thought i would ask here to clarify.  Also, will removing the babysnatcher help with this at all?  Thanks

DF Gameplay Questions / digging up?

Been trying and trying to figure out a way to dig upward when underground but i cannot for the life of me figure it out.  For example, lets say i dig down and under a river, then i want to dig back up when i get across it.  Is there a way to do this, or must i always have access to the top of something when i want to do dig down.  I have tried making an up stair, but it doesn't clear away the tile above it.  Suggestions? Thanks
