DF Gameplay Questions / magma pumpstack

I am attempting to create a pumpstack that goes down 24 levels to bring my magma to the surface.  So far I have been successful except for one thing.  After the initial powering on of the stack, it shoots magma out are a decent rate, but quickly trickles down and doesn't seem to be moving magma much at all. I have atributed this to the nature of pumps, and how they pump out liquids faster than they can replenish.  My question is is there another way to go about doing this, or maybe do I need to build another stack?  The goal is to flood the entire outside edge of the embark area with magma.

One smelter can queue ten orders.

Make Coke R (as many as needed, depending on coal type and magma/no magma)
Smelt Iron R
Smelt Iron R
Make Pig Iron R
Make Steel R

Fully automated steel production, no fuss, no muss, no screeching halt if fuel use outstrips production when you split the tasks between multiple smelters, and it fully scalable to any number of smelters.


This request is utterly pointless(seriously? You want your little make-game-easier mod to make it into the default game so you can use it in vanilla-only challenges? Isn't that a little self-defeating? :wtf: ). And, in fact, I'd like to see more complexity, not less. It's the effort needed that makes steel such a prize compared to other metals.

The fact that needing to irrigate before planting is considered a bug annoys me.  2D was great for that very reason.

I think the short answer here is no, you cannot use anything but magma and water as a "liquid".

My biggest frustration: When designating up/down staircases to sink a shaft deep down (Too Deep), I have to designate every layer individually; I can't just start a rectangle on one layer and zip down five or twenty-five layers and designate all tiles in between as staircases.

Yes, I know that's exceedingly dangerous. That's the whole point--I mined down to the Hidden Fun Stuff, after all. But it was over a hundred and fifty layers deep!!

Use the mouse, and click where you want the designation, then while still holding down the mouse button, go down however many layers you want, and release the mouse button.

Make sure you go to "design new world with parameters" and choose to gen a region, and not an island.  That usually gives me a lot less aquifers.

I know it is intentional, but my point is I don't agree with it. The fact that anyone with a modicum of computer knowledge can get around such limitation is why there should just be an option there in the first place, not to mention the fact you can enable save scumming in the ini file.

It has always annoyed the shit out of me that there is no "exit without save".  Having to go to the task manager is tedious.

Why not just add a floodgate?  Open the floodgate, have water fill up a reservoir, then close the gate again.  If you need to refill, just open the gate.
