it's easiest just making wooden bolts when you get there, and training it on some chasm dwellers or something similar

there's a much safer way by digging Upwards ramps on the level below and then removing them, no danger to life, no fuss, no tantrums.

Caves are normally the best places for hostiles, you can find some bye going to adventuring and talking to peasants and mayors etc.
