So, I started a new fort recently and set up a catch-all stockpile to bring the stuff inside as soon as possible.  The first thing the dwarves decided to grab was the anvil.  I have a feeling I know what they want to be doing.   :)

What every-day-type things have your dwarves done that are noteworthy or interesting, depending on the circumstances?

DF Gameplay Questions / ramps don't support bridges?
« on: June 20, 2008, 10:36:47 am »
I was trying to build a bridge (for the caravan) over a carp/hippo/you-name-it infested river and had the hot idea of building ramps on either side to raise the bridge up a z-level.  However, the ramps won't support building a bridge.  Is this a bug or a feature?

Edit: Ramps don't support any other constructions (floors, walls, etc.), either.

DF Suggestions / Daggers as side-arms
« on: June 17, 2008, 10:20:43 am »
I've been thinking about crossbow use in melee combat, among other things, and came up with an idea.  Currently there is no use for daggers other than as a metal or trade source, depending on personal preference.  So what if daggers were implemented as a civilian/secondary weapon?  So marksdwarves could carry them in case of melee combat, and untrained civilians could carry them either as a matter of course, or in times of danger.  I.e. for fisherdwarves insisting on going to carp-infested waters, or dwarves who absolutely MUST get that ONE piece of heaven-knows-what lying in the direct path of the oncoming siege/megabeast/what-have-you, etc.  Thoughts?

I enjoyed writing (and playing) Cursemountains, so with its demise I've decided to try another fort.  The fort's name is Nokzamoslan (Battlewinds) and, unless someone has a better suggestion, the group name is The Wayward Dagger.  So, you all know the drill.  I need six volunteers, backstories welcome but not required, to join me in exile.  Each dwarf will receive 294 points to spend on whatever they want to bring.  I will claim the expedition leader with the skills: Novice Judge of Intent, Novice Persuader, Appraiser, Competent Pacifier, Competent Consoler.  I will also be bringing 2 war dogs, 20 dwarven rum, 20 dwarven wine, 30 dwarven beer, 10 plump helmet spawn and 10 turtle.

DF Modding / making creatures milkable
« on: November 13, 2007, 08:39:00 pm »
I have no experience modding, so I hope someone here'll be able to point me in the right direction.  I want to make creatures such as cows and camels, etc, milkable.
1) What do I have to change in the raws?
and
2) Do I have to gen a new world for the changes to take effect?
Thanks.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / milking?
« on: November 09, 2007, 08:35:00 pm »
Has anyone figured out how to milk a creature yet?  I have both camel varieties in my current fort (both genders) but when I try to milk one I get "job canceled: needs unrotten milkable item".  I know you can milk purring maggots, but what about the large creatures?  Thanks.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Cursemountains, the hunt for wealth
« on: January 24, 2008, 05:58:00 pm »
Hey all, I've found a site that I'd like to try as a community fortress, and am looking for brave (crazy?) dwarfs to join in the hunt for fame and fortune.  The site has sand/mountain tiles, no trees, no shrubs, no water.  There is also an open-to-the-surface chasm.  Any other features will be revealed as/if they are discovered.  I will be claiming the Leader/Broker for myself, and the first six volunteers/victims to sign up will get a say in what is brought.  Each founding dwarf will get 290 points to spend on equipment and abilities.  I'm not planning on bringing an anvil, as we can trade for one later, but if several people want to pool their points for one, that's fine.
My Dwarf:
Skills:Novice Persuader, Novice Negotiator, Novice Appraiser, Novice Judge of Intent, Competent Consoler, Competent Pacifier
Name: Surath
I will spend the rest of my points once the others have signed up and decided what they want.

DF Gameplay Questions / Help on z-level killing please
« on: January 28, 2008, 09:04:00 pm »
In my current fort, I'm trying to kill a titan toad in an underground river, and haven't yet managed it after several game months of trying.  The set-up is as follows:

Key:
? = where the toad may be at any given time
W = wall
+ = floor
X = staircase
. = bottomless pit
F = fortification
* = where my marksdwarves are stationed
_ = placeholder ot put the symbols in their proper places
------------
_______?????
______W?????
WWWWW????.
++++W?.....
+XX+WW.....
+XX+WW....
++++

1 z-level higher:

WWWWW
+++*F
+XX*WW
+XX+WW
++++
-----------

Is there something glaringly wrong with this set-up or have I just had bad luck?  I have steel bolts, both marksdwarves carry crossbows and they've both shot things before with them.  They are also on duty.  Help please?

Edit: needed to clarify

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarf Companion and 38a
« on: February 12, 2008, 08:33:00 pm »
Does anyone know if Dwarf Companion is compatible with 38a?  I can't seem to get it to work and I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, or if it's a compatibility issue.  Thanks!

DF Gameplay Questions / caging carp?
« on: November 13, 2007, 09:23:00 pm »
Is it possible to capture carp (and other water denizens) to put into a glass aquarium?  I'd like to have one in every bedroom, if possible.

DF Bug Reports / Dwarven liaison bug (38a)
« on: February 14, 2008, 08:31:00 pm »
I'm playing a fort generated in 33g and carried over to 38a and I've just gotten the first dwarven caravan since the changeover.  This caravan had several wagons and camels, but no dwarven liaison.  The liaison wasn't killed previously (or at any rate there is no dead liaison in my unit list).  I have saves from both before and after the caravan arrival, let me know if you need it/them and where to post it.

DF Bug Reports / ocean waves don't push things
« on: November 11, 2007, 01:28:00 pm »
I don't know if this is just my fort, but there is a lot driftwood on the beach below my current fort and the ocean waves aren't pushing it at all.  Now, anyone who's walked along a shoreline knows that that just isn't the case (laws of physics and all that), so I'm assuming that this is a bug.

DF Bug Reports / stock menu bugs?
« on: October 31, 2007, 06:17:00 pm »
Not sure if this is a bug or not, but when I look through the stock menu (under the 'z' menu), none of my animals/livestock show up under 'live animals' or 'tame animals'.  I currently have horses, dogs and cats, all labeled tame, and two of the cats have adopted dwarves, so logically shouldn't some of them at least show up under that portion of the menu?

DF Bug Reports / Animals in cages don't breed?
« on: December 17, 2007, 09:37:00 pm »
Title says it all, really.  I have some animals (muskoxen, sheep, and aurochsen) in cages (one dedicated to each species) and they have not reproduced since I put them in the cages.  If I take them out they're fine.  They are the only ones in my fort (none are adopted pets), so that's not the problem.  I can post a save if you need it, Toady.
