The pop cap is a 'soft' cap.  The number of migrants your fort is set to receive is determined when the dwarven caravan leaves in the fall.  Then you get migrants until the caravan arrives the next fall and checks your fortress wealth vs. the cap.  If the cap has been reached, no new migrants.  If the cap hasn't been reached, you get migrants as normal until the next visit.  That is, if Toady hasn't changed things in the last release.

Water is really only useful for injured dwarves, who currently will not drink alcohol.  For normal dwarves, keeping up alcohol production is enough thirst-wise.  If you don't have water on the map, you can't get it.

Does anyone know if Dwarf Companion is compatible with 38a?  I can't seem to get it to work and I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, or if it's a compatibility issue.  Thanks!

Try Alt+PrintScreen.  Then paste the image into another program, I use Paint.

You actually don't have to assign meeting halls anymore.  Instead go into the 'i' menu, designate a zone and assign it as a meeting zone.  No more animals where you don't want them.  Just unassign any other meeting halls you may have assigned, otherwise you may still get cows in the diningroom.

I've managed to get orders with a quantity over 10 validated.  If you have a very busy fortress, you may want to disable all of the jobs on your manager so that he has no choice but to go do paperwork.

If you go into the 'n'obles screen, one of the noble/admin positions listed is "outpost manager".  The corresponding dwarf in that position is your manager.  If you don't have one, then you can assign one by pressing 'enter' or 'r' works also, I think.

Yep, you'll soon wish you'd never heard of 'stone'.  On the plus side, you'll always be able to completely buy out the elven caravans with stone crafts...
