DF Modding / modding vermin?
« on: June 06, 2009, 05:31:45 pm »
Just a quick question.  If I mod in a vermin creature, do I need to gen a new world, or will it appear in my current one the next time I open it?

Devnote...yes!  Now I have hope that not all my recruits will suffer horrid spinal injuries.  Thanks Toady!  :D

While I understand what Jonathan S. Fox and Aquizzar are saying (and I kind of feel the same way), IIRC Toady said at some point (several months ago?) that he was trying to lay the foundations for both the Army Arc (mainly) and (perhaps?) to a lesser extent the Caravan Arc, so that there wouldn't be as long of a wait between releases later.

Don't quote me on that, though, I can't recall exactly.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: avoiding cave adaption
« on: May 27, 2009, 10:46:41 am »
As long as the tiles are labeled "above ground", regardless of if they're inside or outside, it works for preventing cave adaptation.  Just make sure all your dwarves have to go through that tile on a regular basis.
One warning: if you turn on "dwarves stay inside", you will get a lot of cancellation messages if they have to pass through those tiles.

Remember when dwarves randomly fell asleep forever and died due to starvation and thirst

And Toady said he was going to get some sleep before fixing it... :D

I like it, but I wouldn't mind having a little less of it in favor of more of other similar (differently colored) stones.

DF Modding / Re: Project: adding the missing values to the raws
« on: May 14, 2009, 02:56:15 pm »
Nice table.  One small suggestion for it: could you make another sheet listing all the values that are currently not present in the raws?  It would help focus the research, for people who want to help but may not be sure what they need to look for.  Then, as values are filled in, (since you seem to be volunteering to fill them in) you could transfer them from the "list of needed values" to the "list of found values".  The research wouldn't necessarily be limited to those values in the table, but it would provide a nice jumping-off point, I think.  Anyway, just a suggestion.  :)

Also, check out this topic in the modding forum.  I believe the idea is for all collaboration to take place there so as not to derail this thread any further.

Edit: Beaten to the post.  ::)

Damn you, demanding university schedule!  I only live a couple hours away!  When's the next meet?

Ditto that.  Considering the first two meetups, I'm guessing it may become a fixture for May/June.  Unless the Adams brothers decide to start traveling to other countries...

I have access to a fairly extensive physics, chemistry, and biology library (courtesy of my dad and myself), so I'll see what I can do once exams are over and my thesis is turned in.

Thanks again to TurnpikeLad for setting everything up and to everyone who came, especially those who had a long way to go.  I had a great time.  The only problem is that one of you guys gave me the swine flu!  I’ve been living on zinc tablets and Tylenol for two days now.  If I recover, I can say it was worth it, and I hope we can meet again someday in the bright future.

This was awesome, despite my constant sniveling and coughing. One can't really decide when one gets suddenly and violently ill, but I apologize and I hope no one gets sick because of me.

I've become more and more sick over the course of the night, so I can't promise much for tomorrow, but we'll see.

Not just ThreeToe, but Toady too!!!  Man, you were busy, Tahin.

I'd be willing to help, as summer vacation is coming up and what else am I going to do?  :P  In any case, if multiple volunteers speak up, how would you arrange it so that several people don't do the same work?  (As in, inserting the same values into the same raw files, not the same sort of values into different raw files?)

1) Have you tried installing it onto a different HD?  (As my "state the obvious" question.)

2) Did you check your physical RAM?  Maybe part of that needs to be replaced.  (As in, open the computer, take out the RAM and see if there's any indication some of it has been damaged.  At the very least, you can blow all the dust off.)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / apt artifact
« on: May 10, 2009, 02:57:59 pm »
This was my first artifact of the day, and considering the meetup yesterday, it seemed rather apt.

And this is the dwarf that made it:
