Awesome!  Thank you.

I hate how audio is always such a PITA in linux.

I'm looking at you pulseaudio >_>

DF General Discussion / Re: Text Mode under Linux
« on: May 19, 2010, 01:45:17 pm »
Unfortunately this still doesn't work for me.  I seem to remember linking the ncurses library to the ncursesw library was enough to get 40d working in text mode on my old kubuntu 9.04 install but it isn't working on my 10.04 install.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Here's a screenshot of what my embark wagon and dwarves look like.  It looks like all animals, items, and dwarves are represented by the letter 'M'.  The window borders are messed up as well.

I've double checked I can view a UTF-8 demo http://www.w3.org/2001/06/utf-8-test/UTF-8-demo.html in konsole (both inside and outside my terminal multiplexer) and I've even gone as far as create some files named with unicode characters and verify I can view them in my curses based file manager.

I've also double checked I've got the following environment variables set:

export LANG=en_US.utf-8
export LC_ALL=en_US.utf-8

So everything here suggests the game is at fault - but if datalurkur can get it to work on Arch I must have something configured improperly...

I haven't had much luck with 31.04 in text mode (using 10.04 kubuntu).  My efforts to force it to use libncursesw didn't seem to help.

I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable than me will write up a howto on the wiki - or for toady to acknowledge it as a render bug.

I did a cursory search on the bug tracker but didn't see anything - I'm not confident my system isn't messed up.

greycat: I had problems with sound on my kubuntu 9.04 box while testing one of the 40d releases.

The "ogg not found" message was fixed by compiling a newer version of libsndfile.  The library that shipped with that version of ubuntu (1.0.17) didn't support ogg.  ogg support was added in version 1.0.18 (I had to compile libvorbis to compile this version...)

Of course now I'm running 10.04 and the sound is broken again (I hate pulse audio).

Just in case anyone's interested, I've got a n900 and I've gotten it partially working.

* You need to change the font size in the x terminal app (monospace 12 seemed to work)
* I had to do poopy's trick of making libncurses.so.5 a link to libncursesw.so (so utf-8 characters showed up as something other than '-M-0'

The terminal can't handle utf-8.  Trying to display the utf-8 demo file with less tells me it thinks it a binary file.

In game, things look almost ok, except every non-standard character is displayed as a '?' This includes boulders and dwarves.  Bit difficult to play...

I've played around with my locale settings (http://www.madboa.com/geek/utf8/) but haven't had any luck.

Oh, and there's a bug with the x terminal's enter keycode, you can work around this by using ctrl+j or putting the following shortcut in your .screerc:

# Fix n900 keyboard
bindkey -a -k fe stuff ^M

JGT:

On linux run the 'df' script from the terminal rather than the dwarfort.exe.

./df

I'm running 9.04 kubuntu.  Out of the box I wasn't getting any sound.

Apparently the version of libsndfile that shipped with 9.04 (Version: 1.0.17-4ubuntu1) doesn't have ogg support.  Ogg/Vorbis support was added in version 1.0.18.

I was able to compile libsndfile from source (this required compiling libvorbis from source) and get things working.  Here's a rough list of commands to make this happen (I have no idea if there are other necessary dependencies I had already installed).

Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install libfishsound1-dev liboggz1-dev
wget http://downloads.xiph.org/releases/vorbis/libvorbis-1.2.3.tar.bz2
tar -xjvf libvorbis-1.2.3.tar.bz2; cd libvorbis-1.2.3
./configure; make; sudo make install; sudo ldconfig
cd ..
wget http://www.mega-nerd.com/libsndfile/files/libsndfile-1.0.21.tar.gz
tar -xjvf libsndfile-1.0.21.tar.gz; cd libsndfile-1.0.21
./configure; make; sudo make install; sudo ldconfig

I've been waiting eagerly for the next installment thinking you had hosting/RL issues.  Apparently it was just a broken link:

On this page: http://www.dfa.webatu.com/index.html?page=111079  The link points to '11080' instead of '111080'

On the upside, now I can read several comics in a row :)

DF Bug Reports / [40d6] Dwarves shun their new elven king
« on: January 25, 2009, 12:21:30 pm »
When my king finally arrived I discovered he was an elf.  He didn't arrive with a consort or an adviser and I can't assign any rooms to him.

The savegame is here:
http://trousermonkey.dyndns.org/docs/elf_king_40d6.tar.gz

I'm one of those curious programmers.  Is the git repository public or is it just the source code?  I'm unable to do a git-clone with your url.

12
Does this mean we'll be getting a native linux client with the next release?

BTW I'm on kubuntu 8.04 and sound works great with -sound_output ALSA.  This has never worked for me under wine and it's interesting to hear it during the game.

Also, I have a massive monitor.  With:

[WINDOWEDX:1920]
[WINDOWEDY:1280]
[FONT:curses_640x300.bmp]
and
[GRID:240:105]

I had a FPS of ~1450 during battles.  No other problems.  Let me know if you want any other debug info.

incidentally with my standard giant font:
[WINDOWEDX:1920]
[WINDOWEDY:1184]
[FONT:curses_512x320.bmp]
[GRID:96:37]

I get ~6500-8500 FPS during battles - crazy...

DF General Discussion / Re: How dwarvish are you?
« on: December 15, 2008, 03:36:10 pm »
ha,

actually I was poor college student at the time.  I found a list of materials someone used to make their own - but no plans.  The cost of materials was < $200.  That didn't seem right so I came up with my own (pretty crappy) design and realized the materials *would* be less than $200 total.  At that point I had a design, a list of materials, and lots of open space; if I didn't build it, it would have been a crime against humanity.

Here's another pictures I always liked.

For my brothers wedding we filled a pumpkin with gasoline and tried to make a giant molotov cocktail - the wick went out in mid air...
