I haven't played dwarf fortress in quite some time and the version I got is no doubt quite outdated but I've been having fun anyway and just thought I'd share how things are going.
My current site doesn't have any iron and I've mostly been using bronze but I'll still try and melt down every bit of iron I can get my hands on.
I decided to "part" a mercenary from his iron gear and the whole process was brutally effecient. My soldiers came into the tavern, walked through the bards and various other patrons and beat this mercenary to a pulp and within 30 seconds my dwarves were hauling off the body, melting down the loot, and cleaning the blood off the walls all in one synchronized motion.
I had been wondering though whether one could use some carefully calibrated pressure plates to automatically sort whether a visitor is equipped with heavy armour and deal with them accordingly.

I also tried embarking in an evil biome for the first time but I did the cowardly move of embarking halfway on the border of an evil biome. So far it hasn't been to hard because I can basically just rely on the fertile half of the map. Though when I do send people outside for jobs they occasionally walk through these puddles of goo that build up from the cursed rain and it gives my dwarves a temporary fever. It also means that my doctor keeps throwing up error messages because the sick dwarves will go to the hospital and recover before the doctor can even try to diagnose them.

No ambushes or sieges yet but I'm training up an army of macedwarves and a couple speardwarves.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / What to do with my werebeast man?
« on: September 07, 2019, 07:23:44 pm »
I have a were-rhino trapped inside a box of walls and basically I was wondering if there's a way to make him useful. I can't make a workshop for him because he'll break it every 2 weeks. I was wondering about assigning him as bookkeeper and was wondering whether he actually has to be able to access his office to work.

Any suggestions on what to do with him?

DF Gameplay Questions / GCS not shooting web?
« on: May 25, 2015, 07:31:52 pm »
I haven't been playing df for quite some time and I've just come back and I caught a giant cave spider with a trapped entrance to a cavern and I'm trying to farm silk but I noticed my spider doesn't seem to care about my dwarves.
My setup isn't really that good and I intend to add a bridge but right now I more focused on why my spider is so passive, I had it sit on the other side of a fortification from one of my miners for nearly 10 minutes and yet I got no web. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I've removed it from it's cage with a switch

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Also with my trapped cavern entrance I've caught 7 elk birds, 3 trolls and 1 giant rat. Any ideas on what I should do with them?

General Discussion / How to make keyboard shortcuts
« on: December 15, 2014, 01:58:18 am »
Is there some way in which I can customize my computer in such a way that I can make keyboard shortcuts to open programs from the desktop.
I find it useful that pressing windows+E opens up "My Computer" but I'd like to be able to open up other things with key combinations.

Does windows 8 have this type of feature?

I was just interested to know what game has currently been in or is still in alpha for the longest amount of time. However to classify it must be still in development or have reached beta, so basically it can't be an abandoned game.

Does anyone have any incite on the current world record holder for longest time to be in alpha?

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Fortress Destruction
« on: July 16, 2013, 10:26:01 pm »
For a start this game involves a little bit of math so if you don't like math then you may not like this.

This is a game where you must try to win by destroying the enemy's base. The teams are blue and green. If your day registered is an odd number then you are on team green, if your day registered is an even number then you are on team blue.

You will be one of the following creatures based on the month that you joined.

You are an elf if you registered on:
-March
-April
-May

You are a human if you registered on:
-June
-July
-August

You are a dwarf if you registered on:
-September
-October
-November

You are a goblin if you registered on:
-December
-January
-February

When you post you must state both your race and your team

Each base starts with 1000 hit points and your goal is to destroy the enemy's base by dealing damage to it but try to keep your base standing.

The amount of damage you do is relevant to your level, and you level is based on how many posts you've made in the forums.

Number of posts    Your level    The damage (or repair) you do
1-1000120
1001-2000221
2001-3000322
3001-4000423
4001-5000524
5001-6000625
etc...level+19

Instead of attacking you can repair your own base.
If your number of posts is above 6000 then to find your level divide your number of posts by 1000 then round the number UP to the nearest whole number.

Your attacks can do more or less damage based on your race and the race that the last opposing poster was. Here are the advantages:

Humans beat Elves.
Elves beat Dwarves.
Dwarves beat Goblins.
Goblins beat Humans.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

If you are attacking and your last enemy to post has a weakness against your type then you deal an additional 5 damage to their base because they can't defend it as well. If you are attacking and you last enemy to post has a strength against you then your damage to their base is decreased by 5. Certain combinations of the attackers type and the defenders type will have no advantages, such as human vs. dwarven, in which case there will be no bonuses given to either side.

If you are repairing your base and the last ally to post is the same race as you, you can use cooperation to repair your base for an extra 5 hit points.

You can only repair your own base or damage the enemy's base in one post and you can't post twice in a row.
If a base is destroyed then the other team earns 1 point and the game starts again at 1000 hit points each.

I'll post some templates for how to launch an attack or repair your base and you guys can just quote them if you want.

When you do an attack or repair, state your team and race, calculate the new base health for both teams, state any advantages or disadvantages you have, and state what you are doing.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / My dorfy new cave-in idea
« on: April 23, 2013, 06:57:55 pm »
I've thought of this idea and I call it the repeating cave-in trap and I wanna know if it would work.
This must be done in an area with cold temperatures.

Ground Level: You channel down an area from above ground (for arguments sake lets say it is a 4x4 area).
Level -1: below you dig a 6x6 area and dig away the floor and replace it with bridges.
Level -2: Dig out an area of 4x4 and make it an entrance to the fort.

Pump water onto level -1 while the bridges are still there to form a lake. The inside of the lake will then freeze while there will hopefully be a 1 tile long border of un-frozen water because it is "indoors". Then retract the bridges on level -1 at the appropriate time and the 4x4 block of ice will fall and crush the invaders beneath it.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Who's your most epic dwarf?
« on: April 21, 2013, 09:11:17 pm »
Urist McMatrix charged a kobold ambush of 7 archers and 1 spearman with no trees or anything to protect him and he chopped each one to pieces with his axe while still under fire from the others. Looking at him at the end it appears that not a single shot had hurt him.

What are some of the epic moments your dwarves have had?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / I back and I'm making a death pit.
« on: April 19, 2013, 05:44:03 pm »
For starters it's great to be back here with you guys we have a really awesome community here. I've been on the Ace of Spades forum for a little while and I just don't like the community there, everyone is constantly complaining and bickering about imbalances in the game and such.
I'm sorry I ever cheated on you with another forum.

So onto my death pit. I've dug a nice deep pit of 19 z-levels deep and I have the capability to put a titan (it shoots fire) and 2 forgotten beasts (one's a giant beetle and the other's made of steam) and perhaps even a Cyclops (he might get burned by the titan though) in the bottom of pit. My plan is to drop goblins into the pit so they will be hurt and stunned by the impact 19 z-levels before they are viciously attacked by all the monsters. However I'm interested to know, if my monsters get hit by flying goblins would it kill them? And should I try to keep the titan separate from the rest because of his fire?

DF Suggestions / Listing creatures as compromised
« on: January 08, 2013, 12:06:23 pm »
For I start I apologise if this is already done.
So I had always found it a bit annoying when I have some trolls trapped in a hole and when my dwarves see them from high above they immediately cancel their jobs. What I think would be useful is the ability to go to the (u)nit screen and list the creature as (C)ompromised. This would make your dwarves ignore the creatures listed as compromised because they know they're in no danger. Some exceptions could be:
-when a dwarf is able to see a clear path between them and the compromised creature.
-Or if the dwarf has a natural fear of the creature.

What are your thoughts?

DF Gameplay Questions / Dangerous danger room
« on: January 04, 2013, 12:44:08 am »
I was wanting to train some grizzly bears for war using a danger room however it says on the wiki that pets that wander into the danger rooms will be killed. So I was wondering: If you assign the animal (in this case a grizzly bear) to be a war animal then will it still die in a danger room or will it gain skill?

DF General Discussion / DF music video
« on: December 20, 2012, 09:50:08 pm »
I watched a music video on youtube called a minecraft christmas and it got me thinking. Maybe we should make our own DF christmas video like that. I'm not musically talented so I wouldn't be able to make a video like that but I thought I would just post this idea and see your opinion.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Goblin pit
« on: December 20, 2012, 12:36:04 pm »
When ever I get a siege the goblins seem to bring large numbers so my solution is just to drop them in my pit. There is approximately 100 goblins, 50 cave crocodiles and 25 trolls. So I have more creatures in my pit than I have dwarves in my fortress. But the question is how do I deal with them? I can't flood the place because the crocs would survive and I can't cause a cave in above them because there's not enough rock to drop on them.
My plan was to filter out the building destroyers and then catch the rest in cages.
Or I could just get my archers to shoot them from high above.
What do you guys think?

DF Gameplay Questions / Uninvited guests
« on: December 12, 2012, 10:03:32 pm »
I've got 2 forgotten beasts on my map and they're each in different caverns. My plan was to build them a tunnel so they can live in the bottom of my pit but my question is: If I put them both in the pit will they kill each other?

EDIT: The pit is designed for invaders to be dropped in from 15 z-levels above. I would be able to separate the pit with a wall. I think that some of the beasts secrete toxic substances so if invaders land on the wall then the beasts may be able to still get them.
