What are the "ar" and "im" from? They're confusing me.

No argument here, but if you also intend to do a high variant, I recommend taking a gander at this. I don't know if Loam still intends to rework sentence structure, but it's an interesting concept as it is.

I've reworked it a bit, actually. One of these days I'll flesh it out and put it on the wiki, or wherever. I got sidetracked working on an Elvish script.
Also, the image in that link isn't working as of now... hopefully it'll sort itself out.

the Saxon problem in England in the Middle Ages

Saxon "problem"? You mean "French invasion," surely.

I'm still sore over that one.

I'm surprised at the lack of people on this part of the forum...
It's probably more because people on the internet don't have the time to read and evaluate a short story. It's a rather large investment of time.

One thing that jumps out at me is that your style is too telling. If you're asked to describe a crime you witnessed, you'd want to be as exact as possible: that's telling. In literature you want to show, to make the reader see the falling tower rather than just saying "the tower fell."
A particularly egregious example would be where you explain that, "while the rams did have an overhang to protect from arrows, they weren't very large." This is an entirely unnecessary detail that only clutters the story and drags down the pace. I understand your reason for including it: you trying to cover a potential plot hole. Don't do that - especially not in a battle scene, where fast pacing and high-action language are critical. If your audience isn't willing to suspend their disbelief (up to a point, of course) then don't bother trying to please them.

General Discussion / Re: Short Linguistics Survey (for a class)
« on: January 28, 2014, 10:19:03 am »
If I may ask, what class is this for?
LING 301, The English Language. Just an assignment in the back of the book, really, but since I didn't feel like tracking down all my friends at 11 at night (and it's due at 1 today) I figured I'd just put it up here.

Ok, I've got all I need; thanks all.

General Discussion / Short Linguistics Survey (for a class)
« on: January 27, 2014, 11:01:56 pm »
(wasn't sure if this should be in Life Advice or here... whatever.)

Since these forums are probably home to the most diverse range of people I have access to, it seemed like a good place to post a survey.
Just answer "who" or "whom" for the blanks below - try not to think about it, just put in what you'd normally respond with. Also age and gender if you would, please.

a. ____ are you talking to?
b. ____ gave you that book?
c. ____ shall I say is calling?
d. To ____ are you giving the book?
e. I like the man I to ____ I gave the book.
f. I don't particularly like the man to ____ I gave the magazine.
g. I really like the woman ____ gave me the book.

What's causing your problem is: your creature is called [DARK ELF] (no underscore) but your civ calls for [DARK_ELF] (with underscore). The names need to match.

EDIT:
make sure that your enity has its own unique tag (goblins already use the EVIL one)
Oh, yeah, that too. Missed that.

However, there are some other problems:
1. Doesn't [COLOR:0:0:0] make them completely (i.e. invisibly) black?
2. [MALE] caste doesn't need [MULTIPLE_LITTER_RARE]. Because, you know, men can't give birth.
3. Your colors are all whack. OBSIDIAN and IRIS_ICE_BLUE aren't colors, and GREY should be GRAY. Check this page for a list of acceptable color tokens. You can also find them in descriptor_color_standard, descriptor_pattern_iris_eye, and descriptor_pattern_pupil_eye, in the raws (you could also add OBSIDIAN and IRIS_ICE_BLUE as colors, if you wish).
4. You have SCIMITAR, SHIELD, and BUCKLER each twice.
5. [IRON_WEAPONS] and [IRON_ARMOR] are not valid tokens. Be aware that the game's code only accepts certain tokens: you can't make up your own. Lists and descriptions of all tokens can be found here, if you didn't know where to look.

Also, look at your errorlog (right under the .exe) to check for problems. I don't think it would have caught the DARK ELF/DARK_ELF problem (because that's technically not an "error"), but it can catch a lot of stupid mistakes like misspelled tokens or missing information.

First was an aluminum battle axe that doubled the wealth of my fortress. Only later (when I actually knew how to play) did I realize how awesome that was.

DF Modding / Re: Make world with more goblins
« on: January 15, 2014, 01:23:29 pm »
No: the ambushes are sent by the goblin civs, not the bandit gangs. The bandits live in camps or sewers or castle dungeons, and don't really do anything (in this release).

Goblins also have a tag [LOCAL_BANDITRY], which means that the civ will send out patrols that can ambush players in Adventure Mode. These are different from bandit ambushes, and will also not be affected by [BANDITRY:xx]. At least, as far as I know.

Set [BANDITRY:50] down to a more reasonable number, like 10. Right now half the goblin population will leave to join or start a bandit gang, making the actual civs much weaker in worldgen.

In the entity raws there are [TOLERATES_SITE:...] tags, which means that members of that entity would sometimes move to a site of the specified type of their own volition; so if the dwarven entity had [TOLERATES_SITE:CITY], then some dwarves would just migrate to a nearby human city. That's my understanding, at least; as you say, humans tend to be more passive and don't get involved in many wars, but nearly every human town I've been in has been multiracial (especially in older worlds) - I think this is why.

Right now it's just too much like English. Without enough meaningful difference, it ceases to be a language and just becomes a secret code. I might try to fit it into a more rigid sentence structure, which might especially be helpful for passive voice stuff. I'd have to think of a poetic form that emphasized sentence structure, though, but that could be fun.

For terminology, I'd suggest peaks and valleys
Sounds good to me.

I do have one concern though, how is the stem vowel determined?
It's the final vowel of the aorist tense/infinitive (i.e. the dictionary form)

If the stem vowel has some marking how is that handled?
The verb would probably use endings (which I have yet to think of). Such verbs are fairly uncommon, to my knowledge, but they do exist.
