If you want to actually make it so it swims in lava happily without drowning, that's another story.

Castrating males are rather easy, all you need is a knife and something to sterilize the wound (alcohol).
Wait... you mean we have to use precious, precious booze to geld livestock?
Why bother neutering mountain gnomes? Just kill them; they're useless.
Also hoping we could sterilize females through a similar function.
It's a shame there's not an animal husbandry labor. Link might offend those who are particularly easy to offend.
I think with the coming breeding changes Toady has mentioned, this could actually be important (eg, keeping your populations separate and controlling breeding)

How can you be so cruel to make those poor animals
mate just for your sick pleasure, your a monster
animals are people too.
If you get invaded and you manage to capture some elf or goblin in a cage trap, they should be able to be sent to your jails as war prisoners. And if you get enough in there, a diplomat comes along your way and is there to bargain for their lives. Plus, you should be able to geld them thanks to the devblog. Then again this is Dwarf Fortress and if you expect anything less then horribly awesome stories soaked in blood and encircled with bands of kitten leather then you are in the wrong place
In legends mode, there's some occurrences where Urist Mctrainer goes into the deeps of the world and domesticates/trains a random animal, such as giant olms and mole dogs.I'm not sure it's possible to domesticate a species by training it, unfortunately.
But in my fortress, I have been training crundles non-stop and still have that general familiarity that I started with.
How many trainings does a species have to go through without being bred to count as domesticated for the entire civ? And when one IS domesticated, would I be able to buy it on embark?
Gobbos wouldn't ransom, other races would work. Gelding the prisoners would be hilarious.
I think forcing them to fight would be interesting.
When will items have their own descriptions and prefstrings (analogous to the creature ones)? I'd love to see a dwarf that "likes mugs for their roundness" or something silly like that.
I wonder if Toady One realizes the can of worms opened here, heh.
I'll be better off by studyingand shamelessly stealing parts ofthe already existing scripts.
