In the news:

It appears a new kingdom has arisen today: The Kingdom of Blessith, created by the party "Men of Siege".

Their initial zone is just north of our holdings.  They are shown on the mini-map in a slightly different shade of red than Staberinde.  I initially thought Staberinde was expanding again.

City wasn't one I'm terribly interested in ATM.  Just wanted to know the official line.  Swordhaven IS my next preferred target, followed by Silven Fort.

(edited for clarity)

Further edited to add that Swordhaven has been taken.  It will probably be weeks before I have my 9th level 20 (picked up a level 19 to help fill out a garrison, 4K to level) , not gonna worry about next targets till then.  Meh, could put her in my party for one dungeon crawl  to level her though--too few turns left for now, I'll think about it later.

The peasants in Hagglade overthrew Mayor Blasius Blackearth (wopple) and installed a new NPC mayor that turned to Staberinde.  I assume we should not attempt to take it back by force.  (for now)  However, if an election comes up, is it acceptable to throw a hat in the ring to retake control?

Edit (removed second question for now)

Druiddrite God-like blacksmith is still there (well, a few hours ago). He's been smithing for 63 days now. What a champion.

Unfortunately, he finally got enough cash to move to the tropics.  He's retired now -- map is updated.  The best I've found in and around our territory so far is "Good".

I've set my tax low, (20 + Level - 1).  About on par with the red cities I've visited.

Not that I expect much traffic anyway, given Flyingzone only has1 shop and no blacksmith. :)

And I too avoid high tax cities.

Edited to ask a silly question: What do traps do when you build them to help defend a town?  Are they a waste of money?

It seems to have been crashy for a couple of days now.  I had a hardware failure knock me off the internet for a week, so wasn't sure whether it was an issue on my end or the game server.  Thanks for your comments, as now I can put my mind at ease.

edited to add: Just selling things  in the market is a pain--every 3rd or 4th item sold causes an  error message.  Hope this gets resolved; I like this game and can put up with this for a bit, but stability issues are offputting

I've declared allegiance and set my garrisons to claim land.  I'll claim a town in the near future (or attempt to anyway  :))

There were comments earlier about not being able to disable zombies in the Sim 3, supernatural.  You can set the lunar phase to something other than full moon and lock it there.  Zombies only come out on the full moon unless created by a sim.  That might help you enjoy the expansion if you like some other the other things in the expansion but hated the weekly zombie invasion

I should never check Other Games...it causes me to try new things that I dont have time for. Y'alls endeavors have inspired me to try this game and I've enjoyed the bits I've got to so far.  Spreading my  gaming pretty thing at the moment though, so I doubt I'll get far enough along to be of use to your fledgling kingdom.  Subject to change, though.

If you happen to see Morlicar's Madmen in the course of your travels, know that a fellow Bay12er is wandering those lands 'cause of you . :)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Face Palm moments you had

Play the game for several years, just now realize that starting with 7 dwarves is a Snow White reference.

*Facepalm*

You mean it's not The Lord of the Rings:(

That would be 13 dwarves wouldn't it be?  Bilbo made it 14, so not unlucky

LOTR: there were 7 dwarf kings decended from the 7 Fathers that Aule created and Eru adopted.  It come into play in the Sauron's final spell over the One Ring
3 rings for the elven kings under the sky
7 for the dwarf lords in their halls of stone
9 for the mortal men doomed to die
1 for the dark lord on his dark throne
in the land of Mordor where the shadows lie
One ring to rule them all
One ring to find them
One ring to bring them all
and in the darkness bind them
In the land of Mordor where the shadows lie.

(Poem by memory, so could have some details off)

I tend to make sure the dwarfs are safe-ish and have the resources they need to thrive, then build something.  Currently a modestly large tower into which the dwarves and most of their industries are being moved.  Unfortunately, RL distractions have interrupted that game for now.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

The cavern is nearly walled in.  There was an incident where a flock of elk birds entered the cavern at an active work site and chased the masons off.  The war lions and jaguars weren't in position to see them, so we mustered a militia squad.  After a few days of chasing and killing the flock, they were given the stand down order so they could get back to work.  Of course, immediately after they cleared out, a troop of troglodytes wandered into the same area.  <facepalm>

We mustered the next squad in rotation to chase those things down.  The wall in that area is now complete.  Now all that remains is to close off the final wall to flyers.  Then work will resume on the volcano temple.

Rigothkilrud, "Craftbronze" 13 Granite 152

The last couple of weeks have been mildly eventful.  We breached the first cavern, as it was unusually close to the surface.  Rather than walling it off as the overseer usually does, he orders us to explore and claim as much of the cavern as we can.  We're to build walls to keep new things out until the overseer thinks we're ready for 'em.

Well, all was going according to plan until a giant cave spider blindsided Lolor Rovaddalzat, webbed her up real good and started biting on his steel helm.  Now, Lolor was none too happy to be the spider's chew toy, and worse, she was already a bit thristy so she calls out and gets the overseers attention.  He musters the first two militia squads and orders the first to kill the spider and the second to take position behind the durn thing.  First squad blundered right into the webs that bound Lolor but the second squad took position and charged from behind.  The spider turned to face and webbed them, but this allowed the first squad to free themselves and press their attack.  It took a bit of back and forth, but eventually the spider fell.

Whilst this was going on, a pack of trogs meandered into one of our small pens ... of war jaguars.  The fighting thinned the trogs numbers a bit and scattered them, but we lost a jaguar to a head blow.  One of the troglodytes bumped into young Adil Mistemfer, who was supposed to be practicing making weapons at the forge, but instead was wandering the caverns.  Unarmed and unarmored, as she hasn't been inducted into a militia unit yet, she used fisticuffs and wrestling to fight off the troglodyte.  She eventually managed to get a good hold on the beast and threw it away so she could make her escape.  The trog followed her until they caught the attention of a war jaguar, which ended the trogs life.    She is now resting comfortably in the hospital with a broken nose and broken feet.  Still, she learned how to fight quickly and will be a welcome addition to her militia unit...once she finishes learning her forge skills.

Even though there are still troglodytes meandering around, work continues on the walls.  Almost everyone is in the militia and are armed and armored even when not on duty.  With the war animals around, the odds are in the dwarfs favor unless something big and bad shows up.

Work would go faster if the overseer would let us use stone block.  However, he still insists that all permanent construction be made of fired brick or clear glass.  We spend a lot of valuable time waiting for the bricks to be made, so it is without doubt that something else will wander into our part of the cavern before we finish walling up.  I just hope it ain't a blind cave ogre...or something even worse.
