DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

Rigothkilrud, "Craftbronze" 8th Malachite, 147

The overseer thinks he may have made the tower rooms too big.  The duke's been complaining about lessers having better accommodations and the overseer happens to *like* this duke...so we've been rebuilding the lower housing levels.  Our rooms are still very nice, if a bit smaller, so there's been no major complaints.

The overseer has also just noticed that one of our fellows, Dobar Likotkacoth, had died and that he'd missed the announcement.  Even though he'd been properly honored and buried, the overseer ordered a slab inscribed.  Turns out Dobar bled out in 145; he'd been dead & gone two years before the overseer noticed even though there are only 19 of us.  Yeah.

The overseer's temple at the volcano's summit is slowly progressing.  He's freely admitted that, like the tower, he's making it up as he goes along.  Whatever.  The work is good and he's building decent defensive works as he proceeds so we're not arguing ... much.  He did have to halt work for a season because the work site is too far from our rooms and many of us were sleeping, eating rations and drinking water in the field.  Morale has improved once again and work has just recommenced.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Guided minecart injuries
« on: August 28, 2013, 11:24:42 am »
I had this issue in my last fort, which had a guided minecart track from the surface to the magma sea.  Every few years I'd get minecart related injuries for the guider and sometimes others who happened to be below him on the track.  I had one death from a dwarf being knocked into a wall and bashing his brain in.

Given the low frequency of these accidents, I assumed but could not prove-nor did I do too much research, that the guider went on break (or stopped to drink from his flask, never actually caught the accident when it actually happened) when the minecart was on a ramp and it rolled back onto the poor sap, then continued down the track until it hit a track stop; hitting more dwarves, cats, dogs, whatever on the way.

Blood and shale!  Kol Kodstakud was found drained o' blood today!  We've had no migrants so no suspects...until we remembered that the humans sent a diplomat this season and he's still hangin' around.  Sure enough, overs'r says he's a vampire.

In less unpleasant news, we've had several spirits visit and inflame the creativity of our workers; but their works, while lovely, are mostly decorative with no interesting historical tidbits.

The overseer insists on building in brick and clear glass.  We keep telling him that it will be faster to use the local stone and green glass, and he just nods his head in agreement and orders more brick and clear glass.  At the rate we're going it'll be another 15 years before we're done.

We've had a second wave of births in the fortress now that the first generation is working.  It brought our population to 21, which attracted the attention of a spiirt of some sort.  We couldn't be bothered to check because it afflicted one of our glassworkers, who was already legendary.  The spirit "inspired" our lass to make an animal trap out of green glass. Could have been worse, I suppose; but it could have been so much better.

edit: left year off the journal entry

At the moment, I'd say I was a builder.  Just not a very good one. :)  I turned off invasions in my current fort so that I could concentrate on experimenting on building without the distractions of dealing with ambushes and cleanup.  Though I'm thinking of allowing invasions soon; if only to see if there are problems with the outer works and such.

Blood and shale!

Do I spy a fellow fan, or at least reader, of Digger? :D

That dwarf is lucky he survived his fall, yikes.

Yes, very much a fan of that work.  I need to check back and see if the author has started another project.

I feel that Digger's expletives fit DF Dwarves (especially "Blood and shale"), so appropriated them as sort of a shout out.

Blood and shale!  We had to halt work on the tower shell for a bit 'cause Shem Uzolotung wasn't paying attention when he received his work order to dismantle the scaffolding he was standin' on.  Yep, he fell 6 levels and broke both arms.  Badly.  After he gets sewn up and his bones set, he'll be in traction for a bit.

We're gonna modify the layout a bit so that the next time one of us gets too sober again and has an accident, he'll have a shorter fall.  Overseer is grousin' 'cause the material for the catchment is coming out of the bricks that were meant for the tower shell.  Says he's on a schedule, he did.  Wonder what he means by that?

Alright, listen up!

The overseer has a message for ye!

We've recovered the magma flooded rooms!  Good work.  Have a round on the house.  Yes, we've got a lot of work to do cleaning the mess we've made of the entry level during the project, but we can now take a moment to remember Alath Eribigam, who disappeared during phase two of the project.  Let's have a moment of silence while we drink to him and try to remember who he was.

...

Well, that's that.  The caravan from the mountainhomes is here and we need the flux and steel we've requested so back to work!  These battle axes won't haul themselves to the depot!

------------------------
This is an exceptional dacite memorial to Alath Eribigam
The slab reads, "In memory of Alath Eribigam.  Born 48.  Went missing in the year 131.  Lover of quivers"

Alat Eribigam, one of our miners, has gone missing while channeling access to the magma flooded rooms.  Coincidentally, there was a cloud of ash and smoke billowing from his worksite.  While no one saw or heard anything to confirm an accident, we fear the worst.  We shall engrave a memorial slab for him in a few days if he doesn't turn up.  We will need to forge a replacement pick as well.

It will take some work to find a replacement for him.  We number ninete...eighteen strong, and shouldn't receive migrants unless the mountainhomes get word we've fallen to less then 12 in number.  As it is, everyone already has multiple duties; one of us will need to add another.

Well, despite the setback, the project to recover the part of level two that the overseer carelessly flooded with magma is proceeding well.  We've already carved a few new rooms in the obsidian we've cast.

The overseer really slagged it this time.  Ordered some digging without checking the blueprints.  Now the magma plumbing's been breached and the cemetery and several recently dug quarters are fillin' with magma.  He scrambled us to build new walls to prevent further damage and has ordered more magma powered furnaces and workshops.

Blood and shale!  I bet he's going to pretend this was his plan all along.  Bloody overseers.

Things were going well until Zon Avuzeggut began throwing tantrums...throwing wood...throwing fists...and otherwise being a nuisance.  After yelling at the expedition leader incoherently 4 times, he finally spit out that his masterpiece was defaced.

Zon, bless his beard, is barely an apprentice.  He's delusional!  Even so, we've improved his mood marginally by letting him yell at the boss and giving him his own room.  He was one of the last using the dormitory anyway.

Our distractions have helped but his mood still sours as time passes.  Hopefully he'll come around before he looses his mind.  Knowing his temper, he'll be one of the 'zerks.

Year one at Rigothkilrud is nearly over with no major incidents.  Most of the work to connect the volcano's magma pipe to the forge area is complete.  Now the workers are smoothing the plumbing.  When that is done, we'll tap the magma.

Since this is the first time this overseer has worked with this kind of project, we'll probably need slabs.  How many will be determined shortly.

Edit: Huh.  We expected the dwarf who pulled the short straw to have magma related fun, but he pulled off the job without a hitch.  Magma is flowing and we'll soon be able to power the furnaces and forges we've built.  A good way to end the year.
