DF General Discussion / Re: Dictionary???

But plurals are a basic part of language!
It's funny how much of language you take for granted before you learn a second language.  Yes, some real languages have no plurals.  Some languages have no gender for words we (English speakers) think of as being inherently gender-specific.  Other languages give gender to almost everything.

3. Is it feasible to do metalworking (long term) relying on wood/charcoal, or is some sort of coal an absolute must?
Whenever a trade caravan comes, the game checks how much wood you currently have cut (and also cloth and leather?).  The caravan will magically carry a certain amount of these materials such that if you buy them all you will have some number of items per dwarf in your population.  So if you make sure you've used all your wood before the next caravan, you'll always have an endless supply (in theory).  This is certainly enough to keep you going until you can harness the power of magma.

4. If coal is that important, how do you find it?  How deep is it likely to be, etc?  What do you do if you can't find any?
Coal and lignite are not guaranteed to be anywhere on your map.  For me (or the types of location I usually settle) these are rarely if ever found.

5. Is there any way to disable the dark blue ASCII color, especially in dwarf names, which is almost impossible to see on a Windows console?
You can edit the color values in the raws.  Sorry I can't get more specific than that.

Along with what everyone else is saying (it's a single player game so why worry about how other people play it?) that's kind of the whole point of this game: it's a bunch of little game mechanics that, when working together, create something much more compelling than it could have been otherwise.  Why would you want to arbitrarily limit those possibilities for something as silly as 'fairness' in a single player game?

There's one magma pipe just a little northeast of the map center.  Its highest level is 116, but the magma starts at 112.  There's also a second pipe to the left of it that starts a little lower down.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Constructed Floors
« on: January 06, 2013, 09:36:04 pm »
You can't build constructions on top of other constructions on the same z-level.  But if you build walls on z-0, then the tops of those walls on z+1 act like floors and can be constructed upon.  So usually what you want to do is build walls on top of walls and fill in the space with floors.

You must have aquifers on. I generated without and oh my god a freshwater lake the size of an ocean.
Lol!  Yes, I never turn off aquifers.  I figure one of these years I'll get around to figuring out what to do with those things...

Did you turn on aquifers and try again, and if so did it work out?

You can also change population cap, but it is not nearly as dwarfy...
And also not nearly as precise.

Ok, I like my last idea about a magma moat and glass walls filled with water.  Problem: I have a brook running right through the center of the map, which won't mix well with a magma moat.  How should I handle that?  Just switch to a water moat filled by the brook and use the magma to fill the inside of the walls?  Does anyone else have a suggestion?

I give up.  Why?

...why not mix all three?
Mainly because I'm not super experienced with mega-projects; that's the main reason I'm doing this.  And I'm not sure I have room for all that, but I'll see if I can come up with a workable plan.  But thinking about it, I could do a castle where the outer walls are glass filled with water, surrounded by the magma moat.  The inner keep can be the hanging gardens with its own water moat.  I should be able to fit that on the map without too much trouble.

I'm planning this all out on paper before I start the actual construction, so I expect it to be little while.  If there's interest, I may start a community fort thread for it in the story forum.

No.  Unless you do something (and I have no idea what that might be) to replace your init files.

If you dug down stairs from the main level, you'll up stairs on the second level I think, instead of up/down stairs.  The symbols probably blink because a dwarf is assigned the job but can't actually finish it.  I always just use up/down stairs everywhere; it's far less confusing for me.

Step 1) Regen the world with more levels above ground (LOTS!!!).
I'd rather not regen and try to find the site again.  And the site already has like 30 above-ground levels.  So I'll just stick with the embark I already have.

Step 3) [Not sure if this is possible] Design an Obsidian farm in the sky, in such a way that any (or at least most initial) Obsidian formed isn't sufficiently supported to stay there & falls out of the sky.
Reminds me of an idea that I had for the inside-out fishbowl: let the water out at the top and filter it down through a series of levels with holes to spread it out over the whole area inside the fort so it's like constant rain.  If such a setup used water on one side and magma on the other, maybe it would be possible to combine in air for obsidian rain?  Corollary: Instead of static holes filtering the water, use hatch covers that are linked to a bunch of pressure plates throughout the tower to make sure the rain doesn't always fall at the same places.

most people so far are asking for the hanging gardens, so I'll start planning that.  A  fort totally above ground in a glass tower.  I'll pump water/magma up the center and then run it down in channels that wind through each level of the tower.  Question: If I drain the magma off the map edge, will the magma pipe that's supplying this thing recharge fast enough for an indefinite stream of magma?

Hey guys, I love these types of games. Currently playing A Game of Dwarves and Gnomoria, and wanted to know how this game is and how does it compare? I know its not a graphics based game which is fine by me. I just wanted to know once I get past the learning curve is the game addicting and fun? Please let me know. I downloaded the Lazy Newb Pack, I heard that is the way to go. What addons or mods are a must have or is lazy newb all I need? Thanks...

Those games you list, along with others, are what I call Dwarf Fortress Lite.  None of them even approach the depth and level of detail that Dwarf Fortress provides.  I've tried the other games, but I always come back to DF.

As for getting started, learn to use Dwarf Therapist; it's a life saver.  I recommend the Phoebus graphics pack--it gives the different types of minerals helpful symbols so they're easier to recognize at a glance.  And for the tutorial, I recommend the Quickstart Guide on the wiki.  It gives you the key commands for stuff as it goes through while also explaining reasonable starting strategies and some of the reasons for them.  I think it makes the game much more understandable for new players.

But most importantly, remember that Losing Is Fun.
