I remember reading something about how ores often did have matching values with their metal forms, if not other traits like melting point and so on-didn't having stonecrafters and masons work with native gold and the like create things that counted as stone and were valued as the metals? I remember someone recommending making native platinum statues because it cost one third the platinum as metal statues. *shrug*

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Wanted: Coastal HFS
« on: July 26, 2009, 11:08:53 pm »
I don't think it's possible, because HFS, as far as I know, very specifically exists only within mountains, which means the pure mountain with the 30z cliffs may be your best/only shot. It may be possible to jimmy things in worldgen but it'd be insanely complex, if at all possible.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Orcish INFILTRATORS?
« on: July 25, 2009, 04:16:41 pm »
So, this was interesting. I lost my fort to an orc siege and reclaimed it immediately after. As per the glitchy behavior of orcs in reclaim mode, every remaining orc was friendly, walking around aimlessly.

Until the next orc siege appeared, at which point they instantly turned hostile. What the hey?

EDIT: They turned hostile to me, yes. The orcs in my fort had to be put down. But... the SIEGERS hunted down the OTHER orcs and killed all of the ones wandering around the map. Buggalicious!

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: You have struck Microcline!

It seems REALLY strange. I did take out the gem matgloss file, but I left the METAL matgloss in and took out the MINERAL matgloss.

The end result is that, somehow, metal is still available. It seems to me that civilizations automatically have access to metals or some crazy shit like that, which implies you may be able to trade for them, and that siegers may arrive wearing metal gear. I'm not sure about that-I'm not going to play enough to find out, because I have other fortresses to deal with-but there you go. I was CERTAINLY able to pick up metal items on the embark screen, including metal bars, so it's somehow available.

As I said before, the gist that I got was that the game doesn't check to see if the civilization has access to the mineral in question for availability purposes. Because in this case, the minerals sure as hell weren't available.

EDIT: Checked in a soil area. Even in the woods, digging down a few layers gets you to "rock" placeholder materials.

Also oddly, there seems to be an absolutely absurd amount of aquifer in this world. It took me a minute to find a non-mountain biome which didn't have one. Kinda strange.

I have now created a new DF folder. 40d, with all the matgloss files for stone/mineral/etc removed.

Soil layers only now.

Let's rock.

EDIT: Wow. Worldgen proceeded without a hitch, but the embark screen is a bit screwy-for mountain biomes, instead of the stone layers being displayed, I have the name of the local brook.... three or four times over. Upon embarking on a mountain layer, I find that the entire mountain has been replaced with a material called "rock," which seems to serve as a placeholder; it seems to display the same smoothability and mineability as normal stone layers, but it does NOT produce usable stone when mined. Weird.

I dunno. It's kinda useless-you get absolutely no usable stone, and therefore no stone constructions or mechanisms. It looks like it might have potential if you played in the middle of the woods, though, using imported metal or something and building wooden towers. You could certainly live underground, you just wouldn't have stone building materials. Stockpiling made easy; defenses made hellishly hard. If anyone wants a copy, tell me how to post it and it's yours.

DF Gameplay Questions / Pressure in a tower
« on: July 23, 2009, 03:07:40 pm »
Alright. I've got some experience building huge water tanks, but I'm playing with Quickfort and trying to find new uses for it.

I've got a template for a 10x10 tower that I put together, and I think I might try using it to quickbuild my water towers. I just wonder whether it would work properly: If there is a solid floor on every level, with the only connection being up/down staircase shafts, will water pressure still occur?

I'm FAIRLY certain it will, but I wondered if any of you have any direct experience with this sort of thing.

DF General Discussion / Re: Worst dwarfy death?

I started getting a bunch of death messages one day, after filling a reservoir.

Eventually I located the source.

My reservoir was full of dead babies.

See, this is the reason why my fortress designs always incorporate a "dead layer"-the layer immediately below the fortress gate is left utterly empty as a cavein buffer, so I can't screw up and kaboom things so easily-this is good, considering that one of my favorite doomsday devices is, in essence, a gigantic sheet of solid DOOOOOOOOOOM to be dropped gently upon the heads of the unworthy.

DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf fortress on TV tropes!
« on: July 22, 2009, 04:45:25 am »
I'll admit Tvtropes has a lot of anime geeks. The Japanese names for personality traits and for Nakama have been the subjects of a lot of rename debates lately, but they've been tending to stick-the rename process is extremely democratic, and renaming tends to require a supermajority before anything gets done. Nakama was the subject of a *long* debate, frankly. The problem was that nobody had a really kickass alternative that encapsulated the perceived undertones of "nakama," aside from the Hawaiian loanword "ohana", which had the exact same problem of being a foreign-language loanword which not all readers would be familiar with.

Some of those rename debates get kinda dumb sometimes.

Anyhow, yeah. There's a lot of anime/sci fi geeks that browse and edit, so the majority of examples tend to be anime and sci fi.

Seriously, you don't need special animals. In one of my current forts, I have a pit. Inside said pit, a few tame cougars and rhesus macaques have been allowed to breed continuously.

Prisoners are shoved over the edge and allowed to fight their way free. The only catch is that they have to make it past eighty damn monkeys first.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dumping
« on: July 20, 2009, 06:49:06 pm »
Also, in my experience designation for a job takes precedence over dump orders-if you've ordered a wall to be built using a piece of stone or a log, until that wall is built that object will be left alone and any dump orders will be ignored. I've had the same issue when designating large amounts of walls at once, because sometime a wall would be blocked by a chunk of stone which would lay there until a mason conscript got over there to use it.

I don't believe so, because it would be a huge server hit every time someone did it.

(Not affiliated with the wiki beyond membership, so don't quote me on that)

I think that this dwarf had some.... rather odd fetishes.

A thong that menaces with spikes of cave lobster leather and is banded with silver.

Yeah, sexy.

The relevant init configuration is
[SHOW_ALL_HISTORY_IN_DWARF_MODE:YES] (defaults to NO)

Ordinarily, you get a shortened description in Dwarf mode and get a full description with names and dates, etc, in Adventurer mode if you revisit the fortress. With that init setting, you get the full description all the time.

I don't claim to understand the underlying mechanics behind the generation of that kind of thing, but he may be pulling from civ history (see the Legends mode for some of that). I've had instances where they engraved references to artifacts from other forts, stuff like that.

It's funny, of course, when it goes crosseyed and you get a golden shortsword artifact with an image of itself.
