umiman: At the tech levels it would take to construct your weapon, assuming it's possible at all, I really don't think it will be humans in the driving seat.

Not classic homo sapiens sapiens, at least.

Oh, about diamondoid - no, it's not that energetically costly to make. People have done calculations.

It's costly to take apart, mind you; you're quite right that repairs would be hard. But at seven thousand times higher tensile strength than steel, I suspect it's worth it.

Sure, the adblock plus/noscript combo.

I turn on javascript only when I need to, which is almost never, and I never see this sort of problem.

Unfortunately, no. There are MANY tricks nanomachines can use that evolution never figured out, like using covalent bonds (eg. diamondoid) instead of fluffy, weak proteins.

Not to mention that a bacteria-sized nanomachine could contain similar comuting power to an insect brain without being overly bothered by the power requirements...

What grey goo is, is hard, and pointless. There are far better ways to make war, like the aforementioned microbots. Which is not to say that someone won't create gray goo eventually just for the hell of it...

Oh, and about the wormhole thing.. ignoring all the other problems, there's a very good possibility that wormholes aren't possible at all.

Actually, we have no reason to think they are possible whatsoever. Yes, they are legal under einstein's equations, but only barely - and those are known to be incorrect, so yeah..

What amazes me is that people think this sort of thing is normal.

Switching to Firefox would reduce the chance of getting infected a lot, yes. Better yet, switch to Linux; I have yet to hear of any adware on there.

(Which is not to say they can't happen, but the small size of the target combined with a different software distribution architecture - you don't download software off websites, your distro has it all - makes it impossibly unlikely at the moment)

Taking a more realistic route, we're not getting that machine, but nanofactories are about as good. With the added ability of self-replication.

So. If you have a large, nanofactory-powered industry, what sort of army would you make..?

Well, I'd write some suggestions, but someone else already did. Have a look at http://www.mccarthy.cx/WorldSystem/ - but be careful, it's more than one page.

School days.. avoid it.

I can accept that someone would like it. They have to make their payments somehow, after all.

That said, it's probably one of the.. no, I'm not going to get started. Let's just say, I didn't enjoy it. It's like Higurashi, but without the mysteries, likable characters, interesting environment or originality..

That's a second on Dennou Coil.

I'm more ambivalent about Rozen Maiden; it was fun enough, but not really unique. Better than Geass R2, though.  >:(

Other exceedingly good series:

- Eden of the East (airing now)
- Kemono no Souja Erin (airing now)
- Utawarerumono
- Higurashi - a must-see.
- Fantastic Children.. maybe.

Say, about Pale Cocoon..

Did you see the ending as being as hellishly disturbing as I did? They kept getting pushed downwards, and.. you know where that leads.

You can get VoaDS fairly cheaply from amazon, then.

Or download a fansub. You know, the google/youtube anime videos are almost universally illegal already, and if you're pirating anyway you might as well get a good-quality copy. Google video's quality, frankly, sucks.

I've got one, in the first post, I'd just forgotten to update it. Sorry about being a bit touchy, though.  :-[

Aw, geez.

Anime recommendations? For free anime?

I could do that, but the fact of the matter is that many of the really good ones (which tends to mean unusual ones) are just never officially subbed at all, so they don't exist.

There's a whole world of fansubs out there. Of course those are technically illegal, but when it's a series that has never been licensed outside Japan, I'm not very bothered about that.

Okay. That aside, on Crunchyroll:

Voices of a Distant Star.
It's probably one of the best animes ever made, and it was made by a single person on a small budget, if you can believe that. It's also a relatively short movie, so you won't lose much time watching it.

In the same vein, have a look at Pale Cocoon.

Hm, but most of the really good stuff isn't available (in legal form) online at all.. in many cases, just not at all, online or offline. Still, those two are two of the best.

1272
That's an excellent point. Er.. yes, I'll go ahead and update that now, shall I?  :-[

EDIT: Update done. Hm, but did I miss any new features? I can't remember anything; performance improvements/bugfixes don't count.

1273
We.. know. Really. We know. You can stop telling us now.

I'm pretty sure it's fixed in d12, so.. just a little more patience, please.

1274
The current zoom/resize system is preliminary. You can expect most of the bugs to get ironed out by d13.

Meanwhile, if you want to see fixes before that, switch to linux. I can build DF just fine (kind of), but only on that OS.

1275
I have no idea how long. Most of the code that differs between d11 and d12 was not written by me; ask Veroule.

As for it taking time.. well, a little. But most of it is time Toady would have had to take at some point to get this code into the next real version, and I'd like to think it's time well spent.
