Sentience means they can handle unforeseen problems.

Also, it wouldn't be much of a movie if they just turned the robots off.

Also also, I didn't see the whole series, just the first movie, so maybe they explain this, but I don't see the rebels' rationale.  "Hey guys, we dismantled the Matrix!  We freed you from your idyllic lives so your starved and atrophied real bodies can fight to survive in the sunless hell that is the real world!"  I would punch Neo so hard if I woke up tomorrow in that world.

In the end, people are allowed to continue living within the matrix with the full knowledge that they live in it, with all the arbitrary limits the simulation imposed lifted.

Whats the argument against it. "well guys you can stay here and enjoy this burnt out shell of a planet that is unlivable or you can come to a world where anything is possible and if you know it's not real you can't die."

hmmmm.
But you would be living a lie!

I rather stay out.
A rather cool lie.

They aren't that hard. Although the last block is the hardest.

Whatever, I'm out of here, these people cheat.

How can like half the players have twice as many points as me when I've gotten just about every question right, promptly?

Turbo controllers.  Hax.  Firin lazors

I do like the way it trips people up though.  Earlier one of the questions was "What's the scientific name for a cold-blooded animal?" and one of the answers was "Cryotherm".  That tripped up pretty much everyone.  Not me, though.  I'm Cthulhu.

Cryotherm seems like such a factiod scientific word. Like news reporter would use it. Or Rush Limbaugh. Or a reporter and Rush Limbaugh with the topic - Abortion and Evolution

DF General Discussion / Re: Vote for "Full Graphics Support"
« on: July 22, 2009, 02:40:00 pm »
To head off yet another graphics-rage shitstorm, talking about three-dimensional graphics for Dwarf Fortress is still valid, since it is theoretically the supposition and extension of the fully 3D Slaves to Armok, and "full tile graphics support" is more specific, especially for people just walking into the vote.

I'm mostly saying this just to keep this tired-ass argument from happening again, which Toady already said not to do earlier in this very thread.

I think we should get rid of the voting tool. I think it's arbitrary. Half of things make the game easier in unnecessary ways.

Chop down what now?

Now we know why the elves are so concerned about conserving them :s

Conserving what?
They are just pesky hindrances to massive fortress expansion.

(fixed )

Would Gods eventually have powers, sortof like megabeasts?

Could you pray for aid as in other roguelikes?

DF General Discussion / Re: Books that made you think of DF...
« on: July 22, 2009, 10:03:34 am »
To some this might be like a red cloth to a bull, but the city of Tronjheim in "Eragon" reminded me of DF. The idea of a gigantic city or castle sitting inside a huge volcanic crater is just plain awesome in my opinion.

I sort of liked the first book but then the Character development in the 2nd and 3rd book really upset me. It's all star wars in middle earth though. Now that I think of it, the dwarves are insanely dwarfish.

Sorry, I haven't been keeping up with this topic, but I am trying 40d13 (MacOSX 10.5.7) for the first time now. Please forgive if this has already been reported, but my Designate menu (while narrow) looks like this:

If I hit TAB until the menu is wide, it looks better, more readable, but the keystokes don't line up in a column.

I've already memorized the keys so it's much less upsetting to me. However the glitch involving chop trees and mine are driving me nuts.

I prefer the ASCII because it feels right. It's not confusing. Everything can be explained with [K]

There would still be loads of store clerks, bus drivers, airline pilots, state troopers, road workers, and unemployed drifters.  Especially in America, you'd have to nuke the crap out of everything to do more than dent the population, since we're so spread out over semi-small towns and exurbs.

I'm pretty sure that's why the show went with a virus as an explanation.  Pretty good chance of killing everybody, regardless of occupation or geography unless you're already hiding way out in the woods.  That said, I'll be very interested to see how well these guys do, because if such a hand picked crew of born improvisers can't hack it, we're all fucked.

A sword?  What, do you think the Humungus is going to roll up and shout "Stand And Deliver!"  And no, kevlar is not cut proof.  In fact, that's one of it's most commonly cited shortcomings as police armor.  Not that I would skin a deer with something as unwieldy as a sword either.

Wrong, their overconfidence and knowledge, they are more likely to attempt things that offer long term rewards. Surviving people that aren't special would survive day to day, eventually thinning to a very hardy part of society which would recreate.

How does any of these professions, except doctor, have to do with survival?

Like I said, there's a hell of a lot more to survival than farming.  All those mechanics and engineers would certainly come in handy for doing anything except regressing into the medieval ages.  However, the computer and martial arts people do seem rather superfluous, at least in an immediate sense.

Seriously, I would want two kinds of people - doctors who worked in africa or in a war and naturalist - person who can find running water and recognize herbs n such.

Neo was used to root the matrix of those who wanted to leave. Some bullshit in the two terrible sequels.
