DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Historic artifacts
« on: August 07, 2014, 04:46:46 pm »
Just a random curiosity of mine: it seems that no matter what world I play or see, that artifacts as a general rule of thumb cannot exist during world-gen. All I've seen are oodles of books and sometimes slabs that are made during the creation of the world from time to time. Always figured its a bit weird that you can have 1000 years of history and yet apparently every mood-able dwarf must have been atom-smashed before making their creation. :o Its because of this that I always like to start early on and craft things just so we don't have empty history with nothing cool in it.

Anyone know if there will ever be artifacts of legend (which is often the point of artifacts in the first place; and would make finding them in adventure mode something cool to do)? I'd love to see a history about a dragon coming in and looting a legendary gold floor grate and other such nonsense.

Also, crazy and undwarfish as it might sound, I'd also like to see them woodhuggers and oomans occasionally crank out an amazing work. Surely there must be geniuses out there who aren't necromancers!!

What are your thoughts about this?

Other Games / Aniventure [Anime P&P RPG] - Only 99p!
« on: December 18, 2012, 01:40:37 pm »
Aniventure is a Anime Roleplaying game made originally as a better alternative to BESM, when the author saw BESM and thought 'meh, I can do better!'. Its made to be larger than life, and is tremendously inspired by TV Tropes and anime cliche's in general; something which is encapsulated in its crazy (but efficient) dice and combat systems.

Everything matters and probably affects your stats and powers in an Aniventure game, from your Height to Bosom to Personality Disorders. Whilst the level of character detailing isn't really on DF levels, I am proud of the variety it does have.

It's biggest strength is that it can handle all genres of anime, not just, say, mecha shows or magical girl shows, and it has plenty of options for your GM to add in whatever they need.

Anyway, Aniventure was the result of several years of work that I started in University; and it has achieved moderate success since its release a couple of years back, but I figure the more people who are aware of it the better, and you BAY12 guys and gals look like you'd probably know a decent Pen & Paper RPG when you see one.

Mind you, it does have terrible illustrations and I know it. I've improved as an artist since I first made it, but theres no denying its bad. However, right now its ONLY 99p/US$1.61~ for the PDF in my Christmas Sale, so perhaps you might still be interested if you've got a couple of bucks or a poundcoin to spare.

More detail can be found on my Blog Page here, and naturally I'll answer any questions you may have about it too.

Lakebones: The Exile

Okay, guys, I feel I've done enough solo-fortress play to try a real challenge and at the same time try to boot up a succession fort. Who wishes to join me on horror of Lakebones [Nerosod]?!?

Opening Story: (in spoiler)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

----
The world used is Gastark, previously a crapsack pangaea world with a horrifying ocean generated for me to kill adventurers in (hence the tongue in cheek references above), but I was looking around it and there are some !!FUN!! potential sites for us to use in this project. The one I've selected this time is:

And here is Lord D.F. Hack's noted 'report' for the minerals:

Should be quite a challenge: untamed wilds and the cold, salt water lake that will probably freeze a fair bit. Completely flat plain surrounding it, sabotaging easy defences, and a Badlands next to a forest; with the lake, for 3x biome diversity. There are some Terrifying sites as well on the world, but I imagine they're sporting the instant death syndrome* that has now killed at least 3 of my adventurers of this world (also referenced above), so for now I'm going to give them a miss.

Still seeking future overseers and anyone who wants dorfing is also welcome.

Suggestions for our groups name are also welcome, though I'm leaning towards "The God-Cat of Prophecies" at the moment since its silly. :P If you take up an initial dorf, you can also specify skills within reason (keep it to 8 points just in case we run low on embark, though take note that I'm planning to go with no anvil as well for extra !!FUN!! so a metalsmith might go rusty. Finally, my character, Harper, will be an Architect/Building Designer to fit the above story.

As for succession rules, the following sound decent to me, but I'm also open in that regard:
+ 1 + You have 5 DAYS to complete your run. If you can manage a year in that time, great, but its not essential.
+ 2 + The Main focus is writing a bit of a story though, ideally with at least a couple of screenshots. You can be as verbose or barebones as you like to reflect your dwarves diary entries or other such framing plot device.
+ 3 + All other diary entries from dorfed civilians and other media is great. I'm not sure if this concept will measure up to the silliness of Boatmurdered etc. but if the narrative swings that way, then thats ok!
+ 4 + Anyway, get your zipped save up to an accessible location (Mediafire etc.) by the end of the 5 days. Don't panic about getting the story up in time for the switchover, just get it done ASAP and thats fine.
+ 5 + Our goal is to be alive in 12 years time when the mountainhomes open up again, and hopefully prosperous. Given the story, we shall be assuming that our Dwarven Caravan/Liason is either from separatists who don't want to see us die or from other dwarf civs, or whatever. If you have suggestions on this, great.
+ 6 + If the fort explodes or dies, you can restart from the original save you got given as much as you like as long as you have the time left, but remember your time limit, and if you can't actually do the full year as a supervisor, add something funny as to why you got deposed early!

Anyway, thats about it! I'll wait the weekend for entrants and start my embark on Monday.

DF Gameplay Questions / Artifacts during creation and engraving tendancies?
« on: November 23, 2012, 03:42:33 pm »
Did a search for something like this and nothing showed. Got a few artifact etc. questions:

+ Am I right in thinking that NO artifacts are created during history creation, besides Books and Slabs? I've never seen any appear and it makes the fun a little less in generating a world just to see what was made in Legends. Or are my gens just catastrophically unlucky (wouldn't surprise me)?

+ After an abandoned fortress, I notice if you go back to legends it says your old government is subseded by a new one. Any chance of ever embarking from one of your old abandoned forts if it, say, becomes the capital? (furthest I've got so far is a County~ suddenly realised I need to send some tributes for the monarch to appear, lol)

+ Related both of the above; do your artifacts disappear after an abandoned fortress? I've heard this is the case, but I hope it isn't.

+ Anyone have ideas as to what affects wall engravings? Presumably you'd think the stoneworkers favourite things, right? But one of my guys constantly engraves pictures of flies, but he likes Olms and detests Toads with no mention of flies on his preferences (he's also made 3 statues of them). So yeah. His compatriot is also always engraving a single historic event- A dwarf that strikes down a terrible... DINGO. We have about 50 renditions of that one (le sigh).
