DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: evil desert ?
« on: December 17, 2007, 07:46:00 am »
Sorry for a bit of a thread hijack, but I figure the original question has been answered.

Hey LP, you seem to know a crapload of good sites. Could you please recommend me one with a brook going through a canyon (a river would be better, but I don't think that even exists) in evil environment that actually has evil creatures. I embarked and abandoned three fortresses last night because my "terrifying" biomes were devoid of baddies - the best location had a single skeletal mountain goat and a single skeletal hoary marmot. I want to build a dam, and I want something to keep me entertained while it's being built. Chasm and magma would be nice, but I can do without them.

That's what I did. I dug straight down, deconstructed my wagon and assigned a meeting zone underground. Problem is, a skeletal hippo came in just as the last dwarf was getting to safety, and the hippo is now sitting on all my food and booze while my dwarves starve and thirst. I did catch an opportunity to get the booze when he moved some ten tiles away, but then my dwarves got trampled by a herd of skeletal elephants.

Seriously, this map is freaking insane. I've never seen anything like it, and I've played that map with 25 GCSs.

[WORLD_GEN]
   [TITLE:STANDARD]
   [SEED:3235243655]
   [DIM:257:257]

It has flux, iron, sand, trees and two rivers meeting in a natural waterfall.
It doesn't have HFS, magma, chasm or cave river/lake.

But what really makes it great is the nine pages of locals that live there. Well, most of them don't really live there since they're undead. Undead fish and undead hippos, to be precise. And a month or so into the game, a herd of undead elephants make an appearance.

This must be the hardest map I played so far. After several tries I barely managed to get my dwarves underground before they're eaten by the extremely aggressive skeletal hippos. The problem is, I can't go out to get my food and booze because a pair of hippos is patrolling around them.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / So I've finally had fun
« on: May 26, 2008, 04:17:00 am »
Yesterday I played a whole game of Dwarf Fortress in less than half an hour, and that's without abandoning.

I embarked on a terrifying mountain with a bit of marshland biome. The only immediately visible creatures were four beak dogs. I was happy to see them, because they looked like great target practice since they were separated from my dwarves by 5 z-levels of sheer cliff.

Feeling safe, I set some orders for my dwarves and went to browse the forums while they're doing their work. I checked on them now and then, and everything was running smoothly. But then I checked again and noticed a canceled job, the  cause being interruption by a grimeling. Now, I've never seen a grimeling before, but the name didn't sound too scary (you just can't sound scary if your name ends in -ling). I did want to see what it looks like, so I scrolled around to catch a sight of it. You can imagine how surprised I was to find five dwarven corpses. Only the miners were still alive, so I drafted them and sent them to face this monster. They sustained minor injuries before killing them.

Now, I was down to two tantruming miners, but I was determined to keep this fortress alive. The game had other plans, however. I barely finished burying the fallen (in a graveyard stockpile, without proper coffins) when I got another job cancelation announcement. This time, it was caused by a harpy. I remembered reading that harpies are weak, so I drafted my miners and sent them to fight the flying menace. The miners went separately, and were promptly slaughtered before inflicting any injuries upon the enemy.

Anyway, this game must've had the greatest fun/time ratio of all the games I've played. So now I'm looking for similar games. I'd especially like to try taking on ogres, so any tips on finding them are more than welcome.

Sticks and stones, Kayla. If I always got upset when I read something offensive on the internet (and trust me, I've read things that are FAR more offensive) I'd have a dozen peptic ulcers by now.

Anyway, how exactly do fortifications work? Because I seem to remember dwarves getting shot from the outside through fortification. I'm guessing that there's a chance that the shot will go through the fortification and it decreases with distance. Or does it just go through if the shooter is next to the fortification?

I'm sure that a cat could kill a kobold thief. There's probably vermin that can kill kobold thieves.

Put some plumbing in your transfer chamber and wash the nobles out of it when it's time to deposit food.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Levers
« on: March 25, 2008, 04:55:00 am »
I have several colour-coded control rooms. For example, light blue (microcline) is the water system control room. Here I have levers for all of my floodgates. In front of each lever is a piece of constructed floor of coloured rock. Every floodgate has a piece of constructed wall next to it made of the same rock as the floor next to that floodgate's corresponding lever.

The nice thing about this system is that it can be easily expanded. If you need more different codes, use more "bits". So you could have a cobaltite-felsite-olivine lever, where order of colours is important.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What are your opinions on elven traders

I like elven traders for their exotic vegetables. I like having a wide variety of booze in my fort, and elves help me achieve this.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Whats the best way to make a well
« on: December 06, 2007, 09:24:00 am »
Use a pump at the entry to reservoir, as pumps can't push water above their level. Side view:
code:

-~--------
-~--------
-~--- o
-~---- ---
-~~~%%~---
-~~~------
----------

- ground
~ water
o well
%% screw pump

Offcourse, you'll need to connect that pump to a power-providing axle. I'm not sure if water can flow through axle shafts, so make sure that it's isolated from your main fort.

Use dedicated farmers to ensure that crops get planted in a timely fashion. This means you should turn off all other jobs (most importantly various hauling jobs) for your farmers.

Annoying vocals, but the music is so damn catchy.
