DF Gameplay Questions / What have you learned from playing Dwarf Fortress?
« on: December 15, 2006, 07:34:00 pm »
I have learned that puppies and kittens are excellent, renewable sources of leather and food.

DF Gameplay Questions / Rock Fall Traps
« on: November 12, 2007, 02:19:00 am »
Can these be built outside? Can ANY traps be built outside?

Frankly I don't see it. How do you build and conceal something outside that drops rocks on peoples head? Does it use trans-dimensional rift or something? Dwarven magic?

In fact... Now that we have hatches and the like, we don't really need rock fall traps anymore. It takes a little more work and juryrigging but you can build rock fall traps without making actual traps. Of course it also takes more space, but... isn't that basically what a rock fall trap is? A rock up in the ceiling, that is released upon a trigger being tripped to fall on the victim's head?

DF Gameplay Questions / On the topic of fire
« on: November 12, 2006, 01:03:00 pm »
Have any details been discussed on how this is going to be implemented? The only thing that's crossing my mind at the moment is smoke, the creation of which will likely mean that forts will need some ventilation. And, if smoke is implemented, the furnaces (and forges?) would likely need to generate it as well.

Also I hope dwarves will 'accidentally' light themselves on fire from time to time. Crispy-fried dwarf, anyone?

Oh, and of course, when thinking of fire, one can never leave out weapons: flaming catapult/balista shots, flaming (cross)bow barrages... ahh, the possibilities are endless.  :D

DF Gameplay Questions / Location settings
« on: November 03, 2006, 07:27:00 pm »
What are all the possibilities? I'm mostly interested in those relating to what's around, and their ranking (i.e. most/least dangerous). For the most part it's pretty clear -- but some of them are less clear than others, i.e. calm/serene/protected wilds... terrifying/haunted/sinister/etc. I checked the wiki -- it doesn't appear to have any information whatsoever about this...

DF Gameplay Questions / Oldest World
« on: December 13, 2007, 05:16:00 am »
What's the oldest world anybody's got going right now? Anybody patient enough to have kept making forts on the same world until it's 1100? I saw a 1092 in the map archive, I think...

DF Bug Reports / Detail job cancelations
« on: November 01, 2007, 08:38:00 pm »
Occasionally (I haven't figured out the exact cause yet) a dwarf will begin a smoothing job, but not finish it, and rather than the job being suspended and finished later by someone else, it is removed entirely. I only noticed this because my current project (a massive underground pyramid tomb) involves a large amount of smoothing.

DF Bug Reports / Very bothersome movement bug
« on: October 20, 2006, 03:51:00 pm »
In adventure mode, pressing shift and any direction will cause the game to continually attempt to move in that direction. A workaround I've found is to save, quit, and restart the game. However, this is difficult if the "stuck" button happens to be up, down, or any direction, as navigating menus becomes nearly impossible, especially the "Are you sure?" dialogs.

DF Bug Reports / tug-of-war
« on: October 09, 2006, 02:10:00 am »
I designated all my horses (I have several dozen) into a cage, and also designated them all to be slaughtered. I ran accross something interesting... One dwarf had a "cage large animal" job while another had a "slaughter animal" job. They were both targetting the same horse, and neither can get the thing anywhere -- one will drag it a couple squares one way, and then the other will drag it a couple in the other direction. It's pretty funny to watch, but quite irritating because neither dwarf is doing anything else and my fort is still small enough that it needs all hands.

DF Bug Reports / Outpost liason "leaves unhappy"
« on: November 06, 2007, 10:42:00 pm »
My fortress had a tragic accident of stupidity in it's first year and lost it's miner at the bottom of a lot of water just after the caravan had left with the liason. So, I intended to talk to him the next year and ask for more picks (already at my 15-dwarf pop cap, so no immigrants) but when he arrived, right after I hit the continue button I got a message that "a diplomat has left unhappy". My liason was gone. The traders continued on to the depot, but I was unable to ask for replacement picks.

I hope he actually decides to talk next year...

DF Bug Reports / Backpack wierdness.
« on: November 04, 2007, 05:18:00 pm »
While I accept (and agree with) backpacks becoming full after a certain point (as seen when you try to put an object from hand into pack, and receive a message "No suitable containers") it doesn't quite work right. If both hands are full and you try to pick up an item, it automatically is placed into your backpack, regardless of how much room is left in it.

On a side note, it would be nice if adventure mode characters with the Shield skill wouldn't spawn with two-handed weapons, and characters without it would.

DF Bug Reports / Dogs stuck in pit
« on: January 24, 2008, 03:45:00 am »
So I was tired of my dogs following people around, gathering in high-traffic areas, and generally being underfoot, so I dug a pit, made a ramp, put a door in (set to No Pets), and threw 'em all down there. Unfortunately, now, when I order a dog to be trained, my trainer simply sits in the kennels and refuses to actually fetch a dog to be trained. Are the dogs supposed to meet them at the kennels? If so that would explain it, since my dogs (by design) can't let themselves out of the pit (otherwise the pit does nothing).

DF Bug Reports / Archery Targets
« on: December 07, 2007, 10:21:00 pm »
Last time I checked (a few versions ago) they didn't seem to operate properly. Their failure however slipped my mind until I noticed Toady's comment on them in the change list. Anyways, the problem I had was that only one dwarf would use a firing range at a time. When I say that, I don't mean that one dwarf would stand in front of each target shooting, I mean that if I had a firing range consisting of four or five targets, all included in the same room, only one dwarf would practice at a time. I had to set them all to have their own rooms to get dwarves to use the things.

Also, bolts don't stop at them. I put a target outside, and quickly had a row of spent bolts waaaay off on the edge of the map. Could it be possible to collect and repair spent crossbow bolts?

DF Bug Reports / Manager jobs not cancelling properly
« on: November 02, 2007, 02:49:00 pm »
So I used the manager to cue up 8 rock coffers. Unfortunately I accidentally told him I needed coffINs, not coffERs. As soon as I realized my mistake I went into the manager and canceled the order and made the proper one. However, my mason continued to make coffins; I had to actually go to the mason's workshop and individually cancel all the remaining coffin jobs (By the time I caught on he'd already finished 6 of them).

DF Suggestions / Directions in Adv.mode
« on: February 10, 2008, 10:13:00 pm »
While the minimap is INCREDIBLY useful, a way to partially fill it out without actually having to wander around the town (a time consuming process at the moment, what with occasionally laggy movement) by asking citizens you happen across for directions to various landmarks ("Where is the temple?") could be nice.

DF Suggestions / Simulations
« on: April 16, 2007, 08:47:00 am »
I had this idea at random the other day, while playing DF and thinking about 300. Would it be possible to create a simple-ish game mode, which gives you god-powers (to an extent) and allows you to set up two (or more?) forces, then hit "Play" and watch them beat the bloody hell out of eachother? I imagine you should be able to customize units, setting skills, equipment, race and faction, then place them where and how you like. Perhaps even set some standing orders for them? Them we could see how 300 would have panned out in the DF world. With archery as it is now however, I don't think the Spartans stand any kind of chance.  :D
