Personally I'm glad that we can throw shit so rediculously -- gives us half a chance against those damned giant spiders. I swear, with the giant cave spiders, you're safer exploring ruins than caves now.

Nothing to do with cave swallows or swallowmen (which I assume to be the result of some awful bestiality or some such), but I died epically a couple games ago... during the exploration of a cave I ran into a series of Iron men (who's statues I also carried around, dropping for fights). The first two were no problem. The third broke my wrist, so I started leaving since I was using a greatsword. The fourth beat me up pretty bad before I killed it. I was almost free when I met a fourth... this one beat me up some before grappling my sword, tearing it from my grasp, and beheading me with it.

Damn. I read that and got all excited (Wow they have survey! Go Toady!) since playing MUDs as I used to, I used surveying a lot. Then I re-read your post and got sad since it was a suggestion.

Did you scum to reach that level?

On the loincloth challenge itself, I feel that even gauntlets are pushing it. If you wanted to go truly barbaric, you would wear the loincloth and nothing else. I suppose some sandals, and maaaaybe a helmet, but that's kinda iffy.

I dunno. I might give it a go at some point.

I vary. Axes do seem to result in lots of missing bodyparts, but swords can be fun too, since you get a similar cutting power with more chance to, say, slice open their heart. I used to swear by spears but decided that I didn't like them so much after realizing that without a LOT of skill and strength they don't do so well against ironmen. Maces and hammers I treat as being pretty much the same. I'm not really a huge fan of the blunt weapons.

Speaking of weapons... it's driving me nuts how the game ALWAYS spawns you with a shield. I hate going around recruiting a bunch of human axemen, only to find that they're not as effective as they ought to be because they've got a halberd in one hand and a shield in the other.

Just a question. When I grab an enemy by their weapon, can they still use it?

Also... how do you use a shield to grab someone by the neck? That just doesn't seem... quite feasable to me.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Gruesome Deaths And Successful Saves

The other night I got a quest to go kill a skeltal swordsmaster. So, I picked up a few axemen and went into the ruins. I'm not sure how they all died but somehow I lost the axemen before actually entering the pyramid. On the first or second internal level, I looked around a corner to see, lo and behold, a zombie elite bowman. Before I could react it loosed an arrow at me, which shattered three fingers on my right hand, causing me to drop my sword in agony. I paused long enough to pick the sword back up before closing into the zombie, then wondered how I was going to kill this thing. In the end, I decided it was best to grab it's bow with my shield (somehow) and proceed to then pummel it's face in with my mangled hand. Following that I attempted to flee, but partway down the outside of the pyramid I passed out from pain, and was set upon by a number of skeletons. One of them grabbed me by the neck and began strangling me as I lay there. Suddenly, out of nowhere, my one surviving axeman came up behind it and chopped off it's head... but too late. I died that same turn.

You know what would be interesting, is if there were "towers" that were open, like so:

code:

+++++++++++++++
+O++O++O++O++O+
++++++>++++++++
+++++++++++++++
+O++O++O++O++O+
+++++++++++++++
+++++++++<+++++
+O++O++O++O++O+
+++++++++++++++

with stairs going to more levels that were similar. Perhaps with the pilliars closer together or something, I'm not sure. Certianly would paint a strange mental image...

I don't think these monsters actually exist. I think it may be a bug with the game confusing the monster's name and it's type. Seriously, have you ever run into a Testprophet, or a Wavyflier? They aren't creatures.

I went everywhere. There is nothing left to explore. No more down stairs, no more nooks or crannies. Though it does seem odd that one side of the ruin has a 3 level dungeon while the other is only 2 level...

So my latest guy (who is awesome -- Pan Kesmellofi Xemkashmezmosmik Mubo, "Pan Jadetrots the Mythical Royal Buster of Minds", Spearman) got a quest from two different towns involving a ruins. The quest was to kill one Wavyfliers the Wavyfliers. Bizzare. He's not there, by the way. I don't even know what a wavyflier is. I DID find (and kill) a skeletal swordmaster. That place was kinda hard -- zombies don't die easily to spears. Particularly copper ones.
