DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Operation: Dwarf export.

It's a huge leap, but did you try to sell the Dwarf, or just the cage?

Since guessingo just brought it up, I'd just like to ask everyone on their thoughts on spellcasting builds. Are they, like, as absurdly grindy as I assume them to be? Needing to build up 6 different skills (literacy, memorization, magic capacity, meditation, casting, magic control), purchase/repurchase spellbooks, read/reread spells for spellstocks, and train every spell you want to use individually sounds like it would get tedious, fast.

EDIT: Ninja'd by 1plemaster1. Guess I'm not alone in this.

I'm also having trouble getting piercing skill. I had been using a wooden spear(several, actually, I throw most of them), and later a combat knife, and I keep getting bashing with the spear, cutting(and some bashing) with the knife, and apparently only getting pierce skill with a critical hit.

When this happens, try disabling the bashing and cutting skills, and maybe even the melee skill. The game's priority in combat skill gains gets kinda awkward, if a bit frustrating at times.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: What sort of adventurer do you create?

Human Peasant Male. Maxed Agility, High Strength, minimal in most other stats except Kinesthetic Sense, Spatial Sense, and most other "Body" stats. At least novice in Ambusher, Observer, Dodger, Swimmer, and Reader.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Opinion on Elves
« on: December 17, 2014, 12:15:19 pm »
It's mostly because of their attitudes in Dwarf mode. Not only are they unreasonably demanding when it comes to logging, they're also quite snooty in general. Moreover, as merchants, they can be very picky and easily upset-able, and, more  importantly, they also have strange priorities when it comes to establishing trade relations; they're LESS likely to sell you things you may want, like tamed giant animals, if they're happy with your fortress, opting to sell you junky stuff like clothes instead. That's not even considering that they're liable to already be at war with your civ before you even begin playing, thanks to their alien morality. These give plenty of reasons for players to not even bother tolerating their presence.

In Adventure Mode, it's less about disrespect for the race as a whole as much as it is annoyance at their culture. Anyone raised elvish are often a liability: they start off with useless wooden weapons, and because they're at peace with nature, they won't assist you if you're getting mauled by wildlife. Also, aside from the view, there's very little reason to actually visit an elvish site, once again due to their crappy wooden equipment.

Slowly clearing a basement of black widow spiders by leading them under a garage door. Makes quite a mess and destroys the chitin, but I'd rather not get within melee distance of one.

It warms my heart to see Dwarven tactics and technology being put to good use.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Throwing vs Marksdwarf

I can't say much for any recent versions, but I think I remember in DF2012 that firing bronze-grade ammo from bows or crossbows can actually chip through Bronze Colossi, but for throwing, you'd need at least steel-grade ammo or weapons. That's probably the only situation where there's some use.

what is the value of making a gene and restarting?

To make use of the low-level advantage while at the simultaneously having much better gear to help you out. More specifically, characters of level 5 or lower are exempt from paying taxes, so to maximize that benefit, you'll need to find some way to stay and survive at that level for as long as possible. More often than not, this involves having as much gear with the "Slows your growth" enchantment, super-powerful equipment relative to that level, and maybe a collection of monster balls filled with high level monsters.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Are you moral?
« on: December 01, 2014, 05:14:52 pm »
My characters tend to be a bit careless, not not wholly immoral. They won't, for instance, pick fights with some Joe off the streets,  prolong fight for the heck of it, or even purposefully kill opponents whom are way in over their heads. They won't, however, go out of their way to help someone if there's just not enough glory or material reward to bother, even during an emergency. Moreover, my characters don't consider themselves responsible for any collateral damage; they just don't care if an innocent happens to get in the way of one of their zombie slaves.

@Tiruin

Yup. Punching electric monsters is as dangerous as smacking them with a metal weapon. After guns, zappy things are definitely the most frustrating things to fight for martial artists.

There's also the "Enhanced Muscles" CBM, which doesn't need any power at all, but it is difficult to install.

Cant cook on it. It is good central heating.
Is it possible to cook and boil water over lava? Or does it just make a good zombie trap?

Well, it was possible some time ago. Doing so was a BAD IDEA; remember, you don't have to touch lava for it to burn you!

Are shocker zombies broken?  I encountered one at nearly full health, and on the combat action it suddenly froze me, and my death log shows that the shocker has 30 turns attacking me while I couldn't do anything.  I know they can shock and paralyze you, but any situation where you're denied 30 turns in a row and die is clearly very broken.

Just curious, but did your character by an chance happen to be in a martial arts stance? I had several YASD moments where I forgot to turn off the dragon kung-fu style, which resulted in stunlock/death due to repeated counterattacks against a riotbot.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Vampire lovers?

After I killed two criminal bosses in the keeps dungeon, the two ladies (one was a priestess though) in the keep itself lamented the deaths and hated me for it, which made me confused, like they were relatives or something.

While I like the new interactivity, it needs a good deal more work like knowing why exactly they hate me. And for companions to not be so cowardly.

It's possible that said lady was in fact in league with the criminals after all. I once faced a similar situation in which I killed a historical criminal in a dungeon, and the town's lord hated me for it. Then, I discovered from a nearby settlement that said town was actually ruled by a criminal organization. I had no qualms claiming that town and putting the "lord" to the noose.

It seems that when you retire and then unretire, you can randomly restart in any one place you've made claims to before. Should that happen, you can then retire into that new location, even if it were a place you weren't allowed to before.

Now, my adventurer can stay in his new vault for as long as he wishes.
