Other Games / Re: Linux Laptop Games

Looks like you're sorted.

I was going to suggest King of Dragon Pass (using WINE).  Either the original version from GOG or Steam (mobile compatible) version.  Couple of oddities like needing to quit to reload from main screen (you don't save scum do you :P) or xrandr to reset system resolution (or play in 640x480) for the GOG version at least.  But very low resources, no real need for mouse/numberpad and easy to install.  Plus lots of fun.

Quick edit: Or you could go open source like OTTD.

I beg to differ.  Although the above can have a significant impact on FPS, particularly in large and old forts, in my experience the major FPS killer is pathing.

Significant incidents can be caused by creatures stuck in trees, packs of flying critters on the map, etc., even if hidden, and is confirmed by deep fun stuff.

Repeated problems with low FPS can come from fortress design.  Minimize accessible areas and limit ways to get from point A to point B - one is best - and keep stairways small, 2x2 creates (at a quick guesstimate) something like one third of the FPS drain that 3x3 does, for example.

Beyond the things mentioned in the OP turning weather and temperature off can help.

BTW the spoiler is empty for me...

While your explanation is probably correct, I don't get that behaviour with the version I am running (37 with 43.03 layount, on a linux machine).  So there must be something more to it.  No idea what.  For me they just show as blank (no geometric when I change to that view) being very close to 50(text).

There was definitely a fix put in for non-match to preferences causing a lowering of the roles so perhaps look at that code?  (My understanding of that logic is if match plus vs. no change if not match, with multiple matches giving higher weights.)  It is likely that other categories of weightings (those not currently/commonly used) have not had this variance added.

If you are combing through the code one bug which occurs sporadically but is quite annoying (to me) is that sometimes when the top role match (ie the one that is 100) changes to another dwarf/role the entire weightings get thrown into a strange state where just about everything is positive (so 95%+ of the roles are 50-100 range).  Making a change to a related (to top role/dwarf) custom role (e.g. one that uses the same skill) resets the distribution to calculate normally.  So need a check for which is top rank is before the distribution calculation?

This looks so interesting that you would have my money already but...

I run Linux.  Should I be holding my breath or booking in for a memory wipe as soon as possible?

Hi thistleknot, been a while.   :)

Definitely doesn't look right.  Try 'custom roles/new custom role' from menu to get weightings to show (or maybe there is an easier way... I don't remember).  Is your Attribute weighting set very low/zero?  (Or skill weighting very high?)  Have a play.  Seems to affect your Lawdwarf role too... and I think they are the only -default- ones without some sort of skill associated.  For reference I definitely don't get this with the last fort I played (just loaded to check) but can't remember if I fiddled with my weightings at some point.

Is there anyway to upgrade a graphics...system(?) for a laptop? Inquiring ahead because a friend/family shared Fallout 4 though they mentioned it was graphics intensive and I wondered 'ok let's try it out', and it lags a ton on this laptop of mine that has been my PC since half a decade.

PTW in this thread too! And thanks in advance! :D

To answer the question behind your question, you might be able to get it running (somewhat) better but perhaps with a bit less eye candy.  Do an internet search along the lines of "Fallout 4 Performance".  (Another term to try would be "Optimization" but you'll probably get more than enough from the first recommendation.)  There are lots of people who have gone before you!  :)  Be critical about what you do with the suggestions, in particular I would generally advise against installing any third party software.  But steps like editing ini's are completely reversible if you do not like the results.  Other possibilities like lower resolution textures fall somewhere in between.  Backups are very useful.

Good luck, I did lots of this to get Skryim to run on a machine that was well below minimum required specifications and it worked.   8)

Zotz, Raptors, Pale One militia, Horse Tribe/Horse Brother, any archers if they're not resource-heavy and I don't have good national ones (especially crossbows and longbows), lizards, ichtyids with nets, jade/garnet/onyx Amazons as lineholding chaff, bakemono/atavi as concealable bulwarks/raider reinforcements, assorted aquatics if I don't have better and need to get wet (especially Shark Tribe), etc. But it's ALL circumstantial; all of the above are offering specific skills that my national troops may instead offer, depending on the nation...

Thankyou, that's a great help.   The Pale Ones just as siegers?  Also not sure about the lizards they just seem to die too easy...

More generally, not really looking for archers in my current game but noted.  And indie Scouts, of course!  (Why did I not mention that?)

What independents are worth recruiting?  (Or perhaps which are strong candidates for thinking about recruiting...?)

I played a little dom3 in the past and a smidgeon of dom4 at a friends place some time ago but just got the game myself.  Playing single player for now.  Generally I've never bothered with indies, apart from a few generic commanders mainly for carting reinforcements around (and some jade amazons once upon a time back in dom3...) but I just got an early province in the ring around my capital that has Crystal Sorceresses and Pegasi.  Now I plan to build a temple for the Sorceresses (they can bless my sacreds later and command my human troops meantime) but what about the Pegasi, are they worth it?  Since it might matter I'm EA Tien Chi so I've got map move 3 flying ceremonial masters which makes them look somewhat more appealing.  Thoughts?

But more generally what are the independent troops (and mages too, I guess) that you usually -as opposed to situationally- recruit.  I'm thinking here of generically useful ones rather than those that fit niches in case of specialised strategies.

That sounds like a really cool thing to do.   8)

No idea if you'll find a demand for it but it is far more likely to get decent feedback/exposure in the 'Other Games' forum.  (Personally I never play games on servers, but I knoe there are a number of bay12ers who do.)

Let's say I don't remember a password to some site, but my browser(FF) does and fills it automatically.
Copying from the password field does not work.
How can I extract the password from the files stored by the browser? There has to be a way, right?
Options> Saved passwords>Show passwords in Firefox/Pale Moon.

Hmm.  I find mine (ff 50.0.2) under Preferences/Security/Saved Logins/Show Passwords.  Or I would if I ever allowed passwords to be saved...  ;)

Whichever one of those disables the height map is what you want. The game is sooooooo much less performance-heavy with a flat map.

None of them.  To do that go the your 'map' folder, open world_normal_height with a graphics program (e.g. paint or gimp) delete the data and save empty file.  (Can also be done with the topology image.)

Hey, I have a question. Think Crusader Kings 2 with the Warhammer mod (geheimnisnacht) would be playable on my fiance's laptop?

It should be playable but depending on the laptop it might lag a bit.  (EU4 is more demanding.)  I used to play on a core2duo with 2gb of ram and it did slowdown quite a bit in the later game.

Keeping the speed low helps and you can also turn off some of the graphics extras by editing setting.txt (documents folder where your savegames folder lives).  I used to use:

draw_terrain=yes
draw_water=yes
draw_borders=yes
draw_trees=no
draw_rivers=yes
draw_postfx=no
draw_sky=no
draw_bloom=no
draw_tooltips=yes
draw_hires_terrain=no
draw_citysprawl=no

which helped a fair bit.  Turning off draw_trees is a fairly common performance recommendation.  One of them, draw_citysprawl, from memory, loses some of the graphics you might want (the construction animations, for example) and turning draw_water off looks so bad its just not worth it, imo.  You might not need this but something to try if lag is bothersome.   :)

Quick question: When precisely are you allowed to demand Gavelkind or not? I can sometimes and sometimes can't, and it would be really nice if I could. I can demand it of my Queen Lombard daughter with one county, but not of this annoying Strategos with four.

EDIT: I really don't know what let's you do anything. I was able to demand it of some people but never everyone. Weird.

Copypasta from the ckii wiki:

"If you hold a favor on the vassal, they cannot refuse. If the vassal holds a favor on you, you cannot make the demand.

Otherwise, there is a five-year cooldown and the vassal has several choices. They may offer to comply for a favor (if Conclave is enabled), offer to comply for money, or refuse. With Late Feudal or Imperial Administration, refusal is considered treachery, allowing imprisonment or revocation."

Does that explain what your're seeing?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Question about Nobles. (Confused new player)
« on: November 28, 2016, 06:59:38 pm »
No, you haven't done anything wrong.   :)  Sometimes when the old king dies a random dwarf in your fortress gets appointed king.  I once had one of the starting 7 dwarfs become king... while there were only 7 dwarfs (i.e. before the first migrants arrived).  In fact some/many oversees would love to be in your position, but then they probably drink magma for breakfast too.  I've always enjoyed having a noble and watching them progress through the ranks and cause random fun.

If you want to get a baron you will need to get the kingship to pass elsewhere.  Assuming that there are other dwarf forts still thriving having the current king have a fatal accident should do the trick, if not rinse and repeat until it does (or perhaps it becomes clear that your civilization is not that healthy).  It could involve magma, or pulling a lever, or even heroically charging a siege/forgotten beast.  Or solo cavern exploration barehanded and lightly clothed.

As to your other worry, you don't need a champion to train squads.  Basically any dwarf with military skills will lead a demonstration.  In fact sometimes it is hard to get the novices from not giving demonstrations.  Make a squad, include at least one dwarf with military skills, follow the wiki to set up barracks and uniforms, etc. and watch them go at it.
