Have you tried emacs? :V

My impression - bloated, slow, cumbersome.

I'm happy if it works for you and thanks for the suggestion.

edit: On Sublime, free beer is good, free speech is better.

Thanks for the comments.

After using Geany a fair bit more (pulseaudio I will put you down) over the last day or so (and discovering the split window plugin, duh) I'm a bit more happy with it.

Sublime and Atom both interest me but not being free, for the first, and newness for the second hold me back.

I might revisit when and if the benefits of an IDE beckon.  Am I wrong to wait?

The system I usually use is to fill a cistern through a grate (from below) using water pressure and then draw water from the cistern with a well.  Probably worth building your cistern filling system with a linked cut-off device (bridge/door/whatever) to stop the flow of water.  An exit from the cistern back to the main fortress can be handy when something living falls into the well...

There are a bunch of articles about wells, water pressure, etc on the wiki which could be helpful.

I'm looking for comments/tips on a good text editor for linux.

Eventually hoping to use it for coding but for now it is just text (config files and the like).  On windows I was very happy with Notepad+, no coding work.  I've tried a few and currently use Notepadhqq (mainly cause of semi-familiarity) and Geany both of which are okay but don't really impress me.  Several of the popular ones (e.g Gedit) have left me very flat.  A few are mentioned to be very good but needing some time invested to be able to use well.  (I don't mind this if it is one that I will stick with.)  One thing I particularly liked about notepadplus was its ability to open just about any file even if the contents were gibberish (or mainly gibberish).

Line numbering is a must, coloured code desired, ability to have double view good, quick to load a bonus, capacity to open large files almost essential,... I could go on but hopefully that provides some guidance.  What would you recommend?

Humour.  Seriously.

Well actually not seriously, but in obvious lightheartedness.  Say the most Alice in Wonderland-like thing possible. Absurdist.

And repeat. Every time he gets political start blabbering something bizarre and slightly comical.  Talk like you are on acid.  (If he drops the political spin go normal again.)

Be warned I am generally quite bad with people but this should at least change the playing field.  It is hard to know how he will react...  :o

More information would help find the problem.  I'm not really one to solve linux problem but maybe it is known behaviour?

If Dwarf Fortress launches okay but Dwarf Therapist gives you 'cannot find running dwarf fortress application' message (maybe slightly different words) then you need to start playing dwarf fortress - new game or load a save - then return to dwarf therapist window and click connect, now it should find dwarf fortress (it will even find it once you are in the embark screen).  Basically therapist expects a dwarf fortress game already running (game with data not just load screen) but LNP launches therapist immediately.

If the problem is something else give a more detailed description and someone (else probably) might be able to help.

@Loci

Any chance of pushing that script into DFHack?  (An init would be real nice too...)

I've seen a few of these threads and pasted that script into more than a couple of DF installs.

And thanks! :)

"It would be very impressive if the index study was conducted by an independent third party. Unfortunately, this one is initiated by the Malaysian government themselves.
Yes, the team consists of about 130 experts from local universities, but it is led by the Malaysian Islamic Development Department or JAKIM, which is a government agency."

The body responsible for the marvellous breakthrough of Bloodless Amputation (tm).  Or perhaps not.  Got to love the public echo chamber.  Wait you can't hear that high pitched noise?

In Rise of Venice the player is able to grant loans and gain interest from them at the risk of borrowers defaulting on the loans.  I'm pretty sure this existed in Patrician IV as well.  Its been a while...

I wonder a little at the restriction you are placing on 'finance' though since there are interesting 'monetary' mechanics outside of that.  For example in RoV being able to finance crooks to rip off your competitors warehouses.  Or buy houses and become a landlord (actually this is pretty much required to play the game - although it can also be done purely as an investment strategy).

Just to chip in - there is a DFHack tool which can be used to distinguish two biomes (even if they are of the exact same type).  I think it might be 'probe' but it is a while since I used it.  It returns a unique number for each biome.  I remember using it on a tile by tile basis to determine the exact boundary of two biomes (both apparently identical in type) one of which contained wind and the other which did not.  An interesting point to note is that biomes are actually three dimensional - the boundary can vary (slightly) between z-levels.

I'm sure a quick query in the DFHack thread would elicit more precise info than my vague memories.   ;)

I think Rise of Venice would fit the bill.  Also the Patrician and Port Royale series which were forerunners.

Glazing pots may also inadvertently raise fortress value considerably depending on the skill applied, glazing can also be applied to relevant stone objects too (is that a bug? thats my question personally) which can be a negative thing if you are trying to remain low profile by keeping fortress value down in the planning and infrastructure stages of your fortress.

Nah, it's just another form of decoration.
