Hmm. So, they cease porting the BF:BC2 Onslaught DLC (along with BF 1943) to PC, and now expect us to pay for another game? Right, because I'm suuuure the PC version will receive the same support as the console versions this time::)

BF2 may have been the FPS that introduced me to the genre, but I'm going to need a lot more than nostalgia before I even consider allowing myself to be duped by these guys again.  >:(

So what is everybody else at Moljang working on now? There has been zero activity this whole time...
They're probably all working on different projects.

Which seems... kinda silly. Sell a million copies of a game on the promise of it being awesome and getting lots of updates, then start working on other projects midway through Beta?

Although, just at the moment, Notch is away on holiday. And sure, he's got a huge support staff... but I'd be real surprised if anyone but Notch did the majority of the coding. Bear in mind, Notch has been hack-n-slash coding Minecraft on his own for years now - I'd be really surprised if anyone else could figure out the source, let alone modify it without horribly breaking everything. (Of course, if it was me coding Minecraft, it'd look like a cat vomited all over the Great Spaghetti Monster, but that's besides the point.  ;) )

That wall cling... thingy... was something I completely forgot about 3 minutes after it was 'introduced'. (It was the only real surprise I had during my second playthrough: "Oh, what's this, a feature I forgot about. *10 seconds later* Right, forgot about for a reason;) )

The PC version wasn't horrible, but it did have its flaws. Most notably, I experienced an issue where it'd just freeze entirely during loading screens every once in a while. Thankfully, there aren't that many loading screens in-game; annoyingly, almost all the missions end with a loading screen, and if it did freeze at the end of a mission, you'd have to restart the entire mission from the beginning. At least it was rare, happening twice in my first playthrough and once in my latest.

The short draw distance was also somewhat annoying. (Interestingly, despite it being a mild complaint that only hinders 100% completionists hunting every last bloody blue orb, I noted that every reviewer picked up on it and complained about it. Copy-paste from other reviewers, much?) It ties in to the whole "It works on consoles now go suck it" attitude - they probably didn't care that some people out there aren't sitting on mass-produced hardware that is now obsolete.  :P

Either way, I'm mildly interested in a sequel, and I'll keep my eye on this if anything interesting happens. At the very least, I heard inFamous 2 is also coming out - maybe there'll be another fan war to spectate! (Or another opportunity to see Mercer in a bra.)

OK, Moljang really needs to get it's act together and actually use their own website. What kind of serious project actually uses a facebook page?

You are a multi-million dollar company! Stop acting like a terrible garage band!

As it is, I'm just going to assume that there will be no updates to minecraft at all for the next two weeks.

Well, technically, nearly every multi-million dollar company has a Facebook page. It's all part of 'being involved in the game's community' and such.

And since the Facebook page has far fewer and far less relevant posts than, say, the official blog that's been the main source of update news for years, I'd argue they're certainly not using Facebook too much.  :P

Say I really wanted Avast or AVG, how would I go about getting rid of Norton entirely? The program is not as horrible as it is made out to be, but it does a lot of things without asking, or prevents me from changing options in my own damn system. Including stopping me from getting rid of it. Mind as well rename it SKYNET.

I'd probably go here. Norton's own support page holds a means of (theoretically) removing the software.

And then I'd strongly veer away from AVG.  ;) Avast is good (I use it myself), and popular opinion on this forum is towards MS Security Essentials (which I've heard is good) or Comodo (which I know very little about).

Didn't we just have this thread?
Yeah, maybe.  ;)

(There's also this thread, which had some good mod discussion for a while, before it split off into the other topic.)

(Oh, and I just realized that the older topic was itself a dupe of an earlier thread. Either M&B is incredibly popular, or playing it somehow negates your searching skills.  :P )

AVIRA!
the only bad part about it is that it beeps when a virus is found. that can get annoying if you're on a virus-y computer.

http://www.avira.com

If you're on a virus-infested computer, having your AV beep at you is the least of your problems.  :P

I use Avast! myself, and I've heard a lot of good things about Microsoft Security Essentials (several fellow techies claim it's the only non-crap piece of software Microsoft has ever released!).

Never fear, purchasers - while the source code has been opened up, the game assets haven't been. So, you still need to purchase the game to play it - you can download and compile the source without it, but all you'll get for your trouble is a steady stream of "Missing file" warnings.  :P

That said, from what I've heard, the code's a bit of a mess. And by that, I've had several programmers swear to me that several aspects (rendering engine in particular) look like an absolute hack job, assembled with a serious "just make it work somehow!" mentality. So don't count on a complete open-source revamp coming any time soon - it could be months before the ragged chunks of code are refactored appropriately.  :(

Ahahaha!
You couldn't be more wrong, but welcome to multi-core machines!
An Intel i7-980X Exreme 12MB L3 3.33GHz Hexcore will deliver you 3.33GHz processing power, six times.
And by six times, I don't mean 6x. "Times" in this case means time, that thing that makes the universe more than just a picture.

Basically, what I'm trying to satirically say is, you're not ever going to get 19.98GHz from a 3.33GHz multi-core machine.
It'll be a 3.33GHz machine that can do 6 tasks at once.
You'll be grateful for it to do 6 things at once, but I wouldn't expect it to make anything faster that much.

Also, try to go with AMD. I would try and compare their minimal differences to show a slight advantage of having AMD against Intel, but right now AMD just have an infinite moral advantage to me.
(The only bigger advantage AMD could get is if they started making cardboard chips! Hahaha.)

So it can do 6 things at 3.33GHz?

That's... actually, probably one of the best descriptions of multi-core functionality I've heard. I may have to borrow that.  ;D

To put it another way: Each core tackles one 'thread' at a time. On a standard, single-core CPU (like a Pentium), the CPU rapidly switches between threads to create the illusion of performing multiple tasks at the same time. Emphasis on 'illusion'. Besides a bit of overhead switching between threads, it means the CPU is either running your game or running your anti-virus software or running one of a dozen other processes currently on your machine.

With multiple cores, you can run one thread on each core. In other words, it's no longer an illusion - you actually are running all of those threads, at the same time. However, any given thread is still limited to a single core. Dwarf Fortress, for instance, has only a single thread. If you run DF on a 6-core machine, DF will completely consume one of the six cores, while the rest languish. (Technically, the other five cores provide a slight advantage, since all the background tasks running on your computer can be off-loaded to other cores. But that's only significant if you're using a noticeable percentage of your CPU for background tasks.)

And the AMD vs. Intel debate is a great topic for inciting nerd wars, right up there with ATI vs. nVidia. Right now, I seem to recall that Intel has the fastest chips, while AMD has a better power-to-price ratio (although I'm probably seriously oversimplifying right now!). But hey, if you find an awesome gaming laptop for 1.5k and it happens to have an Intel chip, don't pass it up just because you're dead-set on a competitor's brand name!

Angry statements from other server owners in 3... 2... 1...

(No, but seriously, we've got 3 high-profile B12 Minecraft servers, and I'm fairly certain there's at least one other low-profile server floating around. If this isn't B12-specific, then advertising is always a good thing... but if you're expecting B12ers to fill the server, you might have a problem.  :o)

My computer cannot handle Vindictus. Please only recommend games that my computer could handle. I have my specifications listed above in the first post.

To be fair, your specs aren't the greatest - the CPU, in particular, leaves a lot to be desired. In fact, I had to check the Blizzard Support page to confirm, much to my disbelief, that you could play WoW on that machine. And you technically don't meet the DD:O system requirements, missing the CPU minimum requirement by 0.1 GHz. That, coupled with the pretty impressive list of games you've already played, makes our job a heck of a lot tougher, you see!

Have you ever heard the story about guessing the weight of a cow? Supposedly (I have no sources to reference), this fair brought in a cow, and asked people to guess its weight. Most of the people asked weren't farmers, and so they got wildly different responses, most of which were nowhere close to the right answer. But, when the day was done, all of these crazy responses were averaged, and the result was almost dead on.

Same thing for game reviewers. It's not uncommon for a game to have some >90 reviews and some <60 reviews... but if you take an average, you'll generally get a good result. Aggregate sites can provide one average, but personally I tend to use them as a starting point only; they're great for listing all sites that have reviewed a game, but you'll want to go through each review (or at least a sampling of them), and decide for yourself whether the review is any good. Did so-and-so rate highly because his site is advertising the game? Did so-and-so rate low because he doesn't like the game's genre? By the time you've gone through ~5 reviews (possibly more if it's an expensive game!), you'll probably have managed to distill a pretty good idea of whether you'll like the game, regardless of the quality or bias of individual reviews.

Special hats from crates are sold for absurd amounts of money on auction sites.

Yeah... I'm kind of wondering how long until some group claims that TF2 is facilitating gambling. Buying a key is hardly different from buying a lottery ticket - you pay you're $2.50, and odds are you'll get a crummy weapon (which, thanks to the store, has a fixed dollar value), with a small chance of getting an ultra-rare hat that can be re-sold on auction sites. It's gambling, potentially for real money, and I'm curious as to what would happen if some lawyer tried to push the issue.

It seems slower to me... but that might be because you only get perks once every two levels now. It's easy to remember the even-numbered levels, when you got some awesome new perk-based ability, and forget the odd-numbered levels, when all you got was +5 to Science and Repair.  :-\
