I agree the keystrokes are clunky, the presentation of things in columns is well done though.  I'm inclined to say there are more important things to fix, until someday the entire interface is made more mouse and arrow-key friendly.  The dual arrow and +- menu system never quite feels natural.

I've learned to live with the pile types we have now, but being able to specify Obsidian piles, seed piles, potash piles, alcohol piles, etc will be nice =)

I'm willing to bet its the raw clear or crystal glass.  But, I have lost a jeweler when I had everything but colored diamonds, so it still could be that.  This was even before I reached the lava, which kind of sucked.  I wonder if it could be amber, jade, or the other unattainables.

I haven't had anything too special lately, the first artifact I made in my current game was a cave spider silk and cave lobster shell loincloth... The name had Sullen Fish in it.  She's now a legendary clothier... >_>

My other artifacts have pictures of the loincloth.  

I've got an engraver making a legendary craft with 2 onyx, spider silk cloth, leapord leather, chrysoberyls, copper ore, and pig tail cloth.  He stopped grabbing things before I figured out to make the pig tail cloth, I didn't know that Farmers Workshop made pig tail thread until I read the wiki.

OK, he finished the artifact, its an onyx mug.  With a picture of the amulet the last dwarf made.  The amulet had the picture of the loincloth ;p  I guess my next artifact will have a dwarf raising a mug.  He turned into Legendary Engraver, I was hoping for a stonecrafter but I'll just have to settle for lots of neat pictures.

Heh, pretty much all they could do is pick berries for a year until the first miner and axe person comes.  You wouldn't be able to build any buildings without stone!  Though some can be made of wood, i think...

heh well my first was killed by a skeleton spearmen from the local haunted tower.  The rest killed by spiders and iron men.  On the new map, I was caught in a hidden web and eaten by spiders.

I started in a valley and put some things at Z+1 and Z+2.  

Z+2: Glass workshop (for sand), food processing, butcher, tanner, armor storage
Z+1: Farms, Food storage, mason, mechainc, crafts, still
Z+0: Dining room, carpenter, bowyer, siege workshop... far away I added magma workshops after having some time to plan it out
Z-1: Residences, "hospital", water collection point
Z-?: Mining, some magma furnaces above where I first found lava

I've also got a new building outside where I moved all my barracks and weapon stockpiles, that has a few Z-levels.  Also outside farming, stills, fishing, fish processing, kennel, trade depot, stone stockpile for building.  I need a finished good stockpile under my depot.

I didn't have my first siege until my fourth year.  If you get goblin kidnappers, eventually the siege will show up.  I always got sieges later than most people in the earlier version too.

Is the Intel Dual Core?  Try opening task manager while DF is running, right click dwarfort.exe, and Set Affinity.  Then have only 1 CPU checked.

Try building near named mountains and volcanoes.  I haven't tried for glowing pits yet, 10 goblins in steel armor is enough trouble for me.

Just plop a new one down next to your trade depot, and remove the old building.  Efficiency goes up!  Whenever its overcluttered, build a new one.

Back to your bin problem, I've noticed they will be slow about it but eventually I'll find things moved into bins.  Sometimes they'll do it when there's almost nothing there, sometimes they wait until the stockpile is completely covered with single items.  Digging a huge finished good storage area below your trade depot works out pretty sweet, as well.
