"<Do you remember much about the resort, can you fly for long? You might be able to fly there, but the other squads will probably try and shoot you down.>"
Nadiye nods in agreement
"<We made plans for aerial interception as soon as we saw the photos, I can't say more - it's a conflict of interest, but there are only three other squads, so if you can beat them as easily as you beat us->"
"<I wouldn't say only, one of them's the student council, still still we all have er, that- he gestures vaguely at Gwen -sealed in us so it can't be too bad right?>"
"<Right. Hmm... if someone's already looking her brother why does she need to get back so urgently? Is it like one of those animes where she's worried someone else will steal his heart->"
A hand clamps down around the girl's mouth. The courier smiles, eyes closed mouth twitching.
" <Yes. Organ harvesting is a real problem around these parts. You can't be too careful. Now if you'll excuse me, Nadiye and I need to go and have a little talk.>"
He begins dragging the paladin away.

"<Moving along... do you have any way to contact him, does he have anyone to look after him at the resort? They know he's not Awakened right?>"

"<Well I mean, the Beast's not bleeding and neither is Gwen.>"
"<Oh right, your brother, you mentioned he was staying at a resort?>"

First layer is faster done manually, subsequent layers are faster with recursive, much faster, you pump energy in and the subspells do the rest.

"<She doesn't know?>"
"<But you're our targets, how would you->"
"<Sorry, last night was a little crazy. Yuki, Noriko, I'll explain. This is sort of how the festival started off actually, it was a practical exam for the military academy here, squads of students would try and hunt down their teachers through the street in fights to first blood, it became a bit of an attraction, and then this whole festival.>"
She lets that sink in for a bit.
"<If you're both their targets, then there's probably a few more squads hunting you down, they won't know your location but they'll know what you look like. You can tell who they are by theirs bracelets - it's silver for students, black for duelists.>"

Gwen mumbles faintly in her sleep, something about array-like objects and not a number being a number.

"Yup! Think about it! If each layer was free to make more layers, you'll have a directed acyclic graph that's thickest in the middle and sparser on either end. Most of the layers are in the middle of the graph, I'm guessing explosion and membrane layers go off together, and that each pair goes off when the previous pair does so... if you pump enough energy for n layer pairs, you're going through them in log₄(n) + 1. That's an explosion."


You enchant another round, same amount of energy, same amount of time, but instead of jumping in steps of greater and cost cost, the enchantment builds up smoothly. You fire it and sure enough you get an air-bag like effect.

You can already tell there's an issue as you're charging the spell, the energy requirements are increasing at an exponential rate. You fire and the round strikes the platform detonating, it's an explosion, not the violent expansion yiy wanted but an honest to god explosion of force without any of required cohesion.

"Did'ya feel anything weird when making that?"

"Yup! Wanna learn some?"

"<Heh, I was hoping it could buy us more time, never expected her to turn my own spell against me.>"
"<Say, what was up with those black arrows?>"
Ruben continues staring at Gwen's unconscious form, his priorities clearly elsewhere.

"So you're familiar with subspells right?"
Well yes, you're not that much of an amateur. Spells can use their own power supply to execute other spells, it's how your tracers and enforcer rounds work after all - rather than requiring you to manually portal them, they've got their power supply for opening portals.
"What we'll wanna do is make the each layer type the other layer type's subspell. That way you just need to make the finest layer and the rest will build itself a long as you keep pumping in energy. Think you can do that?"

Yuki and Noriko
Patricija isn't too hard to find, given well the eyes on her as well as you two, well that and the fact that she is walking towards you two right now. "<That was amazing! I had no idea you two were so strong!>"

A handful of eyes seem to be glancing expectantly between Noriko and the Princess.
