DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Some Newbie questions

How did you disable them? As far as I am aware, unless you mod the raws, you can't completely remove them.
Done via Lazy Newb Pack. When opening its menu, there's on the very first page a button that lets you either enable or disable aquifers. After reading up some info I figured that they might be a bit... TOO fun for a complete newb, and disabled them for now XD

As for question 5, the best option is a shotgun spread of cage traps. Drop them rather haphazardly around areas you see animals walking. If you're in a forest, you could potentially wall off large sections between the trees to funnel the animals into specific areas with tons of traps, but that's usually more trouble than it's worth, considering how well a simple spread works. Packs of animals tend to stick together for a while, so when one's caged, the others sort of mill about in the same area for a while.
Thanks, I'll try doing this. I somehow find the whole animal catching-and-taming thing absolutely awesome ^^ Can't wait to have my own furry furpark milling around the fortress (gotta be careful with CPU though... well, I guess should it get out of hands I can still keep them in cage/s). And since you can make zoos that make the dwarfs happier even those that are untrainable aren't ENTIRELY useless after all.

Have you fiddle with your init file at all?
Not in any way I'd know of, however I do use the Lazy Newb Pack, and have previously installed other graphic packs, always over the Lazy Newb Pack  (Ironhand, Phoebus and Mayday to try them all out, now at Ironhand setting again). (Ironhand and Phoebus were already inside, Mayday I added, and it works fine)
Maybe I don't have all files needed (I downloaded the most recent version of Jolly Bastion though) or I need to install it into DF itself, not the Lazy Newb Pack? Or do I have to unload the folder in a specific way? I got that you can't have folder/folder/files setting in the graphics section for it to work, but somehow when I rearranged it to actually read be folder/files it somehow wouldn't work either. I also made sure to only have one of the two size versions that comes in one folder. As in:
- unloaded the file in the graphics folder of Lazy Newb Pack
- deleted one of the two internal folders (9x12 or 12x12 respectively, I tried either)
- copied the raws and data folders from that internal folder into the main folder
- deleted the second internal folder, so that I had the main folder with the raws and data folders inside
However, somehow it won't work like that.

You said this was the first level underground?  Then chances are good that you just tunneled under some water on the surface.  If you look and the water is above then it is safe to dig those squares out.  Just don't dig up.
Actually on the 3rd level underground, but problem solved anyway - when I expanded the 2nd floor underground and the map view got bigger, it turns out that yep, there's a small lake just exactly above the spot of the damp stone.
Thank you!

How would I go about installing Mayday into the LNP? I can't find it as a tileset, only as a integrated DF-thing. I can confirm it's not in the LNP advanced.
http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=7025 This link might help you. I followed the steps as advised on the site, and it works just fine. ^^

I have a similar problem concerning Jolly Bastion ( http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=104261.0 ): I downloaded the most recent version, but somehow just can't figure out how to incorporate it into the LNP. Using either the 9x12 or 12x12 folder doesn't work either, nor putting their files in the Jolly Bastion folder. Any help? I'd really like to use this tileset.

Thanks a lot!

I already use the wiki a LOT (pretty much never have less then 5 pages of it open at any given time while playing the game). The entire caravan thing must have sort of escaped me, I'll try not to ask useless questions again. Well, I'm still glad... I was somehow already half worried I messed something up there.

As for 4) - so damp stone means water, not magma, messed this up. However, it can't possibly be an aquifer, as I have them disabled. So that then probably means there's just randomly a super hot lake a few floors down... or something XD

DF Gameplay Questions / Some Newbie questions

First of all, hello everybody!

I'm very new to the game, having started playing less then a week ago, and this is my first post here. I hope I'm doing everything right (I hope this is the right place for my questions), if not, please tell me and I'll try to go to the right place(s).
Well, I'm about a year into my first fortress now (expected it to fall much sooner, but since no threats arrived yet and I haven't struck that magma vein that seems to be on just 3 floors below the ground, it still stands strong - in fact, the biggest threat so far was my initial utter inability to get my dwarfs to chop wood, which was thankfully solved by Dwarf Therapist), and while with guides and wiki and the likes I think I managed to do fairly well, some questions just can't seem to be answered so easily, and I'd be really thankful for some tips on those:

1.) Okay, this is more of a hardware then an actual gaming question: How can I combine Jolly Bastion tileset (I downloaded the most up to date version) with Lazy Newb pack (also most recent version)? I tried various different ways of putting the files in there, but it. just. won't. work. And admittedly I'd REALLY like to use this tileset... I also like the graphical ones, but I like how this combines beauty while actually being very similar to the vanilla experience.

2.) When will there be another caravan? I utterly FAILED the first time they came to my fortress, doing diplomacy with them but having not gotten to actually trade ANYTHING. Will there be another chance to trade with the same civilization, or will it always be different ones? ... I hope I did nothing to scare them all permanently away from my fortress. O.o

3.) I'm admittedly also still a bit confused about the trading system. So I have to move the stuff I want to trade to the Trade Depot while the caravan is there? It's probably the about hardest to understand thing in DF I stumbled upon till now.

4.) So on one of the first floors down, I struck damp stone. So this means that maybe magma goodness will come sooner then I could've ever guessed... however, I'm not very keen on just flooding my entire fortress with the stuff. Any means of telling where the stuff is when I got that message? And I'd be very thankful for a few easy suggestions how to, once found, approach that stuff safely.

5.) So I'm interested in animals, and taming wild creatures intrigues me a lot... So I started producing needs for cage traps, and have set an animal trainer whose making first steps by turning my dogs into war dogs. What I could need some help with is - What is a good way to place those traps? I am living in a calm biome, so no aggressive creatures right now I could lead into traps at my front door. However the wild animals just seem to appear on random places on the map for a short time, then vanish again... Any tips on how I can make some of them my own? ;)

Well, that's all for now. I hope I phrased my questions understandable, I know there's lots of text... and that they're not too stupid either XD
Thanks in advance,
DwarvenCat
