Do you mean the experimental version doesn't run under proton on Linux? What error are you getting?

I checked all the files, errorlog.txt, stderr.txt and stdout.txt. Nothing there to see that says, this is why it's not running. If there's a place you'd like me to check out, let me know.

Even when launching the Steam app from command line, all the output seen is the initiation handshake. DF is started in another state. So there is no helpful output there either.

I decided to load it up with wine. It complained about a missing msvcp140_atomic_wait.dll. Once I copied that file into steamapps/common/Dwarf Fortress, it works fine. The loading is a lot smoother than the standard release. My screen doesn't flicker.

No joy launching it from steam the conventional way.

Thanks, Zlusudra! I see it now, even without my glasses on.

Thanks! Been there. Followed the instructions. Even logging in anonymously, there isn't any new post button that I can see. So, unless you have an account, no new issues can be opened up.

The SDL2 version of DF is an experimental branch that uses SDL version 2. DF has previously used SDL 1, which is very outdated at this point, so there is an effort to upgrade.

Thanks! My applogies for the misplaced pronoun.  >:( I bought the Steam version today to see what you were discussing. Unfortunately, the proton version of the experimental branch doesn't run on Linux. :D

On a lighter note. I used FFmpeg to convert all the Ogg files to mp3. I'm having fun replacing old Soundsense files with the new mp3's for my 47.05.   8)  That doesn't sound good. Well, I bought the program. I figured I might as well have some fun.

For those of you with any interest in old-school stuff, I thought the following might be helpful. There's enough game there with 47.05 to keep me busy for the rest of my life. LOL! Programmers are like dwarfs. They don't live very long, anyway.

DF Gameplay Questions / Where do we file grievances?
« on: June 04, 2023, 08:13:27 pm »
Just kidding.

I wanted to file a bug report, but the forum and the bug reporting system are locked. The bug report thread in Discord has been archived. Are commoners not allowed to file?  :D

I did have one grievance though beyond that. It would be nice if there were an option to introduce the cursor back to the new interface. Some of us who have been programming for years wear a nifty little thing around our wrist. Having to use a mouse is terrible for our bodies. :)  That's why Vim is so popular and all the cool kids use Lazyvim to program with.

Duerer Tapestry
For Versions 47.05 and 50.08

In shadowed depths, my hammer sang,
Unleashing doom with an echoing clang.
Yet in despair, dreams cast a glow,
Kindled by hope's enduring fire deep below.
Gems, precious in my sight,
Ignite my masterwork in the lantern's light.
With fingers weathered by relentless time,
This tale I craft in a dwarf's own rhyme.
Adventures feebly etched into memory,
Now woven into time with this tapestry.

This tileset features a few minor rearrangements of HaterSkater's original tileset,
but it's intended to be as faithful to the original layout as possible. Don't get me
wrong; I love the new art in the Steam launch. This is purely for some nerdy nostalgia.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: trade depot changes
« on: June 04, 2023, 08:40:40 am »
I think you're limited in construction on how close you can construct things to the edge of the map. I wanna say 5 tiles?

Thank you! The starting maps in the Steam version are a bit smaller than I'm used to seeing. I would have never made the connection.

DF Gameplay Questions / trade depot changes

I used to be able to tuck my trade depot inside.  Is it two stories now, or must it be outside now?

DF Modding / Steam Mod Question
« on: June 03, 2023, 04:13:54 pm »
Rather than editing core files, I'd like to create a mod that alters the color.txt and tweaks a few settings in the init_default.txt.  I would also like to include an additional tileset in the art directory. The only examples I see for mods are tweaking the graphics. Does anyone know if it's even possible to do with a mod?  I'm guessing not, considering that some of the settings in the init_default.txt are accessible in the settings menu.

The dwarf filling in when the game opens is it loading sound/music files. It only loads those files, and no other sound files.

I have changed this in the SDL2 version, and as of that version, you can add new sound/music files.

OK, I just understood what Putnam was referring to, but what is he talking about "SDL2 version"?

EDIT: Nevermind. I see. Someone would have to create a mod for DF to runt he soundsense sound files. That would be amazing!

If you're unfamiliar with the patch syntax, it just means to add these three lines at the end of the log() function, before the "end" on line 37:
Code: [Select]
    local logfile = io.open('gamelog.txt', 'a')
    logfile:write(dfhack.df2utf(s) .. '\n')
    logfile:close()

WOW! It works! Thank you!

Tilesets and Graphics / Re: [0.47.xx]v26 CLA Graphic Set
« on: May 15, 2023, 08:30:20 am »
Is there any chance this tileset will be updated for the steam release?

If not, would you be okay for people to do it themselves and post to the steam mods page?

Thanks for making the best tileset.

Make it even if they say no. We all know what happens to a dwarf separated from finishing their masterwork. If you do try it, it looks like the asset definitions have been rearranged a bit. It might be interesting to figure out.

WOW, even after all this time. I thought I'd load this up in 50.08. I've been on a hiatus for a while, but I thought I'd give it a try. It even works in Wine!

Can't wait to check this out.

I think the main thing I noticed was the new scaling options. Both have to be set equally for this:

[INTERFACE_SCALING_TO_DESIRED_GRID:YES]
[INTERFACE_SCALING_DESIRED_GRID_WIDTH:170]
[INTERFACE_SCALING_DESIRED_GRID_HEIGHT:170]

It's pretty generous that he's still releasing all the new stuff publically.

OMG, how did Toady do this? The new UI is so beautiful!

I recently ran into that flowchart From Caravan to Happy Days on the Wiki.  It's extremely helpful for new players.

The Steam version could have some form of that as part of a quick help system.  I could see someone like Kruggsmash doing it up quite nice!

It doesn't have to elaborate with links or anything.  I think a quirky style pull down menu with a scrollable hand drawn flowchart by a dwarf that demoed the proper flow of fort design would be a sweet addition to the Steam release.

Any tips on finding people in adventure mode?

Also, when somebody dies who wanted an artifact returned, does that ownership pass down to anyone else, and if so, who?

This is super interesting.

This kind of defeats the purpose, but can you sell the artifact to another race?

I'm curious now how alignments work, and if there would be any benefit to this at all -- other than some scribbles on the next stone wall?
