Well, that explains it.

General Discussion / Re: Cisgendered, Transgendered, Labels and Social Justice, and opinions of such.

So the OP is arguing against excluding people from their groups and not using labels to hurt people. I certainly cannot disagree with that. As a transitioning mtf, I've never heard of anyone insulting cisgender people as a whole or using cisgender as a slur. I don't tend to hang out with other transpeople, however. I also don't know what the SJ community the previous two posters referred to is. Google's best guess was Jesuits which I highly doubt is correct...
As for my opinion on labels, I don't mind them. I sort of like them, frankly. Labels don't lie, provided you don't buy into stereotypes and whatnot and can help people identify as part of a group, if that's their thing. If people use labels as an excuse not to care about a kind of person then they clearly lack empathy and understanding, regardless of what they are themselves.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Your last mad giggle?
« on: December 22, 2012, 02:50:41 am »There was a kitten strolling down one of the minecart tunnels one day. It was minding its own business, happy as can be, when a minecart loaded with ores roared down and ran it over. It broke multiple bones and suffered cuts, and tried to drag itself towards safety. That same minecart comes back down the track and runs it over again, this time empty. More broken bones, more cuts. This time it passes out. Then the cart comes back full, runs it over. The cart comes back, runs it over. The cart comes back full, runs it over. This happens several more times, each time it suffers more injuries and falls unconscious every time. Blood has covered the hallway, and the kitten finally succumbs to its wounds. We cleared it out later, when the minecart was taken offline for a bit while I changed what stones were in the stockpile it loaded from.
All the while I was giggling like a madman.
God damn. I'm tearing up reading that. It was just a kitten. D:

Dear Gray McLangur,
Why did you feel the need to steal a wheelbarrow? I'll have you know that at time of writing we are enslaving any of your kind that wind up in our cage traps. If they don't wind up in the cage traps, they will wind up in the weapon traps.
From, the Wheatcraze Animal Trainer and Butcher's Guild
Dear Immigrants,
I understand wanting to join the Flowery Affliction at our outpost in the Hill of Roars. We are in an important location for the Portal of Doors' continued operations in this region and I hope you all realize what important work we're doing. However, as Overseer of this fine fortress, I wish to know why so many of you suddenly decide to leave your homes and head out into the frontier on the border of Goblin territory. On several occasions upwards of twenty individuals have arrived here seeking purpose. We simply don't need this much dwarfpower. Throughout your stay here, keep in mind that those of you that came in larger groups will likely receive more menial tasks and overall be of less priority. If you prove yourself to be an asset then your accommodations shall be made appropriately more pleasant. If not, everything you hold dear is forfeit.
Sincerely,
Kaitlyn Obscurelancer, Overseer

Urist doesn't bitch about being scratched by a cat and doesn't even considering killing an innocent creature for natural playful behavior.
Fixed.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Weretortoise Shell
« on: December 20, 2012, 02:09:39 pm »You are aware that this makes dwarves a bit less prone to start wars with elves right? Elves will still get pissed over wood trades though.
Indeed, I actually also changed some other Dwarven ethics in the raws to further improve Dwarf-Elf relations; and I have a binless crafts stockpile for trading with elves. I also made humans babysnatchers and thieves so they're hostile along with goblins. Although I left their ethics mostly unchanged otherwise so they're likely at war with everyone.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Above ground forts?
« on: December 20, 2012, 02:03:34 pm »
Obviously skilled carpenters and woodcrafters would be immensely helpful. I would think you could have a decently effective marksdwarf squad with masterwork wooden bolts. Trading with elves for the seeds of plants not found in your biome would be helpful since you'll likely be relying on above ground farming. Livestock would go a long way as well with a surface focus. On a side note: If you'll be using only wood any doors you make would be vulnerable to the less dangerous variety of building destroyers. Checking the list though, if you're not going to be digging, the only non-cavern dweller among those is the giant desert scorpion... Which I doubt you'd see being in a wooded area. Adding the WOOD_WEAPONS and WOOD_ARMOR tokens to dwarves might allow you to make weapons and armor out of wood like elves as well. Not sure on that.

« on: December 20, 2012, 01:49:24 pm »
I agree with marksdwarf practice. Also, even if there are bowgoblins in the pit if you set up a fortification to cut down on the chance of your dwarves being hit too directly you could still do it while also training medical dwarves from the shots that do connect. After a bit of a double-check, elite bowgoblins can shoot through fortifications perfectly fine. Only use the pit for marksdwarf practice if there aren't any in it. Normal bowgoblins are fine though, they can't shoot through fortifications at range period.

Should also have them make their helm out of its bones.

History of my nearly four year old fort. While that's not very long obviously, I've primarily played on and off and haven't actually managed to stick with one fort this long before.

Weaponsmith claims forge, I wait with excitement as he grabs some steel, the anticipation is killing me as I dream of a steel sword of ultimate badassery scything through the wretched goblin hordes...
Rovon Livatoslan has created Thumbufun Ifit Med, a steel crutch!
I had a similar facepalm when a bowyer went into a strange mood. Keep in mind that I've modded the raws so dwarves can use bows and arrows. So of the three things he could have made: a crossbow, a bow, or a blowgun, I could have used two. Guess which one he made? A palm blowgun by the name of Immast Stukos; The Influence of Razors. It has a picture of my civilization's (The Portal of Doors, which I find amusing) general on it. Not only that but after becoming a legendary Bowyer from that, I told him to make some bone bows under the presumption they would be made of something decently intimidating. Nope. Donkey bone. That guy is one big disappointment.

If you get around to it, a female swordsdwarf of mine decided that the best way to combat the oncoming emaciated and eyeless winged rattlesnake forgotten beast was biting it in the head. I gave her the nickname Snake-eater for that. On a side note, I believe she was also holding a baby at the time...

I have a dwarf who likes humans as well. Which is odd since I've also modded humans to be babysnatchers and thieves... The only one I've seen though was a weretortoise.

Because of that, an earlier mood which produced artifact leather armor, and more recently an artifact pig tail fiber tunic, my militia commander is wearing three artifacts simultaneously.
