DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Benign Megabeasts?
« on: January 24, 2018, 09:36:38 pm »
So recently I've started playing adventure mode again on the latest version 44.05, but I've now noticed that while there is still the aforementioned oddity regarding aggression and escalation, this applies to megabeasts too. Often a megabeast can start off completely peaceful when in plain view and you have to initiate the combat yourself. I'm not sure if this is intended behaviour, but I'm wondering if anyone else has been experiencing this. Seems fairly odd that your average dingo will be more aggressive than a hydra, and also detracts from the storytelling aspect where it's "I walked up to the hydra chilling in his lair and stabbed him in the face".

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / New way to train armour user...?
« on: May 14, 2015, 10:21:34 pm »
As I know, armour user is used to make dwarves move faster while wearing armour, very useful for dwarves in full steel for example. It is trained primarily through the dwarf letting his armour absorb the hit, which begins to become problematic for elite dwarves who can parry and block most attacks through sparring or live combat with ease. After seeing Skullsploder's ingenious barrack design in the Ultimate Melee Dwarves thread, which involved the dwarf falling down 2 z levels when they dodged during sparring, so the impact itself would give some armour user skill. I applied this to my current fort, and it was worked decently well although it delayed sparring a bit it didn't matter since they were already at the peak of their ability in most other skills (Axedwarf, Shield User). For fun, I decided to just give them each 2 master work wooden shields to perhaps train misc object user on the way (useless in fort mode usually, but I thought it would help their shield bash when they are in live combat). Now, I forgot about this and believed them to be having a master work steel battle axe, so regularly sent them to kill an isolated human soldier, which is where it gets weird. As expected, once the human was subdued I checked the reports and they were hilariously bashing him in the head with their wooden shields, which was deflected by his bronze helm. But during this, they were actively gaining armour user at a hugely rapid rate, going from Great to Master in mere minutes of  bashing him in the head with wooden shields. They are gaining armour user skill as I speak. Is this common knowledge? When I searched up dual wielding shields on the forums, I didn't get anything mentioning this.

Edit: Both my axe lords are legendary armour user right now, from great armour user. They are gaining quite literally hundreds of EXP from just bashing the human with their shield, almost as fast as Danger Room gaining speeds.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Reclaiming a fort conquered by humans...
« on: August 24, 2014, 08:07:45 pm »
Well I decided to delve into the fun of reclaiming dwarven forts, and I saw this lovely little one said to be conquered by a human civ. I decided that it would be neat to reclaim this, so I did my standard embark setup. Immediately when loading the fort, there is a baroness and a human spearman listed as a Visitor, and a message of "An ambush, drive them out!" centering on a dwarf miner. Um, okay. Unpausing the game then led to random dwarves throughout the reclaimed fort to be declared as part of this "ambush". Note, it seems that both my dwarves and theirs show no interest for each other. Uh, what is going on?

HYPEREDIT: Okay, now dwarves are popping out of midair and each having a separate ambush message. What the hell.

Second Edit: Alright, now the dwarves are spitting at each other. I will find out the history of this fort.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / An ambush! Drive them out!
« on: July 08, 2014, 02:26:14 pm »
Well, I was playing the new version and reclaimed a fort. I was discovering the insanity of the past owners, until I got the message "An ambush! Drive them out!". It centered on a single eagle, and afterwards had no status message/bar of "AMBUSH", and nothing else happened. Has anyone else encountered this?

Curses / CCS Arises when I just recruited 5 members
« on: August 30, 2013, 02:04:13 pm »
I literally just started the game and recruited 5 hippies to legally get money. For some reason even though I've kept it low key for the first week of revolution I've somehow provoked an uprising of the Conservative Scumfucker Squad.

Curses / Free Apartments

Just wondering, was this changed in the updates? I remember before it was insanely easy to get a free apartment by threatening the landlord, but now it always fails.

DF Gameplay Questions / Dual Purpose Military

Can you have a squad with dwarves with both a crossbow and a melee weapon?  Would the dwarf know when to use which effectively?

Curses / LCS Beginner Noobie Question
« on: April 10, 2013, 10:05:26 pm »
I have been playing for awhile, but usually it ends up horribly since I get impatient.  I now actually have a sleeper empire and 40 or so liberals but aren't trained in combat.  I am kidnapping some military soldiers for training my guys but the problem is I somehow raised gun control awareness for the first time in all my games.  Now i can only get pistols, so I was wondering how would you change things like gun control, homophobia, death sentence etc.  Some are obvious but some aren't for me

Is it illegal?  Because my guys are frequently being chased, yet they have no crimes listed (well until they ditch the police).

DF Gameplay Questions / No water for hospital
« on: January 05, 2013, 06:36:51 pm »
I have tons of alchohol, but the water here freezes during the winter, anyone know how to have an everlasting supply to water that doesn't freeze?  Because if my dwarfs get injured they are pretty much screwed to dehydration.

DF Gameplay Questions / Another Newbie Question on Elves
« on: January 02, 2013, 10:56:00 pm »
Well I haven't had the guts military to attack the Elven caravans fearing they will launch an attack.  They always have the most demands and profit margins so its no good trading with them anyways. >:(  Will I get any huge, hippie siege with their wide assortment of terrifying tame war animals? :-[

DF Gameplay Questions / Rotting Food
« on: January 02, 2013, 03:50:12 pm »
Another newbie question, I've let my dwarves loose on the wildlife lately, and I had a massive foodsplosion.  Its not that I'm sad, but now I have so much food it is starting to rot away.  Is there a way for my dwarves to eat more?  Selling it to caravans is still a little long considering the long periods of time between each caravan.

DF Gameplay Questions / Newbie Military
« on: December 29, 2012, 08:08:10 pm »
Hey I just started playing Dwarf fortress a few weeks ago, and after several failed fortresses I finally have one I am content with.  It is the beginning of my second year, and from past embarks I know a siege will come soon which has wiped out my previous fortress.  I am confused on how to set up a standing military to hold out against the 70+ sieges that will come soon.  I only have a 7 man militia axe squad and a m6 guy marksdwarve squad. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
