Or have a barracks nearby, but walling him in is the most practical.  Just make sure no one sees him dying....

I just do one point in each dwarf for faster startup, then just go crazy on breeding animals and plump helmets... I think I'm doing it wrong but hey, it doesn't matter too much on a neutral embark right?

I'm a newbie as well, and the game can be very addictive at times once you get the hang of it.  You can leave it in the backround and do other stuff as well, they make a pause game button very clear.  I never used the LNP and went for the Iron Hand graphics mod, mostly because I like their sprites better :P.  Try the game out, and when starting out a tutorial or the wiki can be EXTREMELY useful. Good luck and have fun.

Okay, so it seems large squads aren't a very good idea.  I'l try having mini-sparring squads and maybe a danger room.  My last fortress actually tried to lock out/wait out the 70 gobbo siege but they still came and slaughtered us.  How would you wait them out?  Also, how do I build sniping towers?

Also, how do I train my dwarves quicker? It's my second year and Kobolds are escalating, just a warning sign for Goblin Christmas.  Right now my recruits I trained from the beggining are still listed as but recruits, meaning they won't learn axe skills from my training axes.

Okay thanks guys, yeah my last fort first had a few small ambushes I killed with my iron-clad strikeforce with some markdwarves.  Then lo and behold a siege comes with like 5 guys more than an ambush, so I just kill it again.  Next siege is 70 strong with trolls, bats, a MASTER HAMMERER, WHIPPER AND RIDER. I was totally unprepared and was pretty much murdered .  I tried reclaiming, but the clean-up was too over-whelming.  With my new fort so far I am gearing them up earlier with Iron first soon to be steel after.  I followed the wiki like you guys said, and now have a meatshield squad equipped with wooden elven arbage weapons, and an elite squad decked out in Iron.  I also have a weak marksdwarf squad, but not enough quivers.  I have 2 more questions, how can I make effective fortifications/marksdwarve towers and how do I get more quivers?

Thanks, Cheedows

Hey I just started playing Dwarf fortress a few weeks ago, and after several failed fortresses I finally have one I am content with.  It is the beginning of my second year, and from past embarks I know a siege will come soon which has wiped out my previous fortress.  I am confused on how to set up a standing military to hold out against the 70+ sieges that will come soon.  I only have a 7 man militia axe squad and a m6 guy marksdwarve squad. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
