Things are going to hell now.

"The Polish Air Force has completed the evacuation of Ukrainians with Polish descent living in eastern Ukraine and extracted them to refugee camps in Poland on Jan. 13.

The operation was conducted by C-130E Hercules and C295M cargo planes which flew to Kharkiv to board 178 persons belonging to a large ethnic minority in Ukraine which is set apart from the main body of population.

People who were qualified to be extracted were in possession of Karta Polaka, literally meaning “Pole’s card”, a.k.a Polish Charter a document which confirms the Polish citizenship of people who cannot obtain dual citizenship in the countries where they are residing (Ukraine in this case) while being Polish. These people also had no Polish citizenship or permission to stay in Poland earlier on.

The first wave of flights evacuated about 120 people living in the areas controlled by the pro-Russia separatists, while the remaining 60 were transported during the night, between Jan. 12 and 13."

This probably means a full blown offensive is going on.

Well, until very recently, we were living that dream of not having states use force against each others within Europe, thank you very much.
Maybe in last 14 years or so. But just to note, EU is not one country, hack they can still have war against each other, even nato countries fought among them self  before, so anything can happen and nothing is safe.

In the same way that it's physically possible for a helicopter to fall through the roof of my house and crush me, it is physically possible for Britain to go to war with Luxembourg.

It is. Eu doesnt prevent it, and no one know what the future will bring. With all the immigration, war in other parts of the world and similar, problems can very easily start to pop up in next few decades the moment there are some economic or other crisis.

2) Becuase the reason Russian army fought a few skirishes near Mariupol was because the DNR and the LNR were in a very bad position back then, about to be overrun by the Ukrainian army, disorganised, undergunned and internally squabling. Now the situation is different and Putin can just let the rebels fight for themselves with Russian supplies, as that is much better for combined warfare.

Our imported rebels were going to get wiped out so we sent in more actual soldiers, now we pretend they're not Russian soldiers because that's better for combined warfare.

If by imported rebels you mean people that live there and work (mine workers, ex ukraine soldiers and similar), I agree. Most of fighting in donbas/donetsk area (the part I am following) is done by locals. In fact people dont hide from where they are, if they are not from ukraine but from other countries like belarus, russia, german, franc, spain, serbia and similar

Here are some of them in this interactive book:

Sometimes I wonder, if today's Internet, message boards and social networks existed in the 1990s, would Serbs, Croats, Bosniaks and other people from war-torn nations fling shit at each other like Russians and Ukrainians today?

I think we're once again witnessing how former brotherly nations become mortal enemies. It happened in Yugoslavia, it happened in lots of places across the former Soviet Union, and now it's going on in Ukraine and Russia.
Don't worry, we will soon become friends once more after the war ends.
Everyone I mentioned are either at odds with each other or still openly hate one another (in particularly bad cases like Azeri and Armenians), and it's been almost 20 years since all the wars. I don't see a better outcome for Russians and Ukrainians.

Well, it depends. In case of things like Serbs and Croatians, after 10 years of the war end it's pretty much more or less friends again. For bosnia its little different as there is tendency of the country falling apart, so they are little more less friendly because of the situation there (but people are normal, at least that I know of). There are some parts in both countries (cro and serbia)  that  still hate each other, especially people that lost someone in the war and some politic parties or organizations. But for majority its not the case. But you will still see internet wars going.

But I dont know will it be same for ukraine and russia. I am a half serb, half croatian (well 75% serb if its that important). Lived on kosovo, but after the cleaning moved to center east part of serbia. But am often going to croatia, as I have family there, and to work there also during summer.

To illustrate, currently in Ukraine journalists find it absolutely OK to go and say something like "Unit A stationed in city B has no enough anti-tank weapons. Boo the government"

I see a problem here

I see problem with ukraine military, complaining about its government and giving info to the press. That is the main problem with you example, not the press. So commanding officers should take care of that.

OSCE dislikes it? Than it must be good

Than I guess russia support of rebels is also good :P.

But, yea in war times, its common to have bigger control of medias unfortunately. To remove propaganda and truth that is negative/harmful  also.

Reckless Congress 'Declares War' on Russia written by Ron Paul, some senator in USA

Dont think it will go same as Iraq, but still interesting.

Ukrainian journalists have taken to protesting outside of the Ukrainian Parliament buildings as they're upset at a new government ministry, which deputies approved in the Verkhovna Rada late on tuesday. The name of the new ministry: "The Ministry of Information Policy."

The government is now deciding the story that get's told. Journalists opposed to this notion are being arrested.

Reporters Without Borders is already stating it's firmly opposed to the creation of the ministry, stating "Putting the government in charge of 'information policy' would be major retrograde step that would open the way to grave excesses."
