DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Why does this kill FPS?
« on: October 28, 2009, 07:57:34 am »
The jobs for the mining probably wont get added to the queue until they are accessible so no expensive path finding calculations will be done. Of course they will have to occasionally check if they are accessible, but that shouldn't take up a lot of cpu.

I do hope I manage to find another one of those delicious rats.

Only minimally I think... I assume you mean completely walled off mining jobs?
Or jobs on the other side of a ravine with exposed walls?

Seasonal update.
13th hematite 202 Early summer:
A peasant got killed by troglodyte's, I had sent the wrestlers to help him but it was too late. I am going to order the champion wrestlers to kill any Troglodyte to ensure this does not happen again.

14th hematite 202 Early summer:
A orc siege force arrived. I am unsure if the fortress will be able to withstand this onslaught...

Our champions, Unable to get back to the fortress in time where quickly decimated by the attackers.
I have ordered the main entrance to be shut, with the fortress lacking any other defence, all we can do is wait.

23rd Hematite 202 Early Summer:
Johbson, the former leader is brooding... He claimed a carpenters workshop. He requested cut gems, I have seen some rough gems in the stockpile, so I will order those cut.
He still looks like he is missing something. Unless we happen to get some he will probably go insane.

9th Galena 202 Late Summer:
Johbson has gone insane, whatever is left of his body, will surely soon follow his mind.
If this siege doesnt end soon, we will surely all perish. I have taken over Johbson's stock managing duties for the time being.

21st Galena 202 Late Summer:
Johbson has drowned himself in the water collection area, If we are unable to retrieve his corpse it will surely taint our water supply.

Sorry Johb, you died.... (damm orc's!)

the happenings so far:

1st granite 202 early spring:
Have just arrived to this "fortress" total population 4.
It took some time of bashing on the door before someone decided to let me in.
Although there is plenty of food and drink to ensure we wont die from thirst or hunger, I still fear I might not survive this.
All there is to do for now is try to survive until migrants desperate or foolish enough to venture to this place arrive.

10th Granite 202 early spring:
The fortress stone worker has stopped working on the engravings in the tombs for a while and engraved a bit of the bedroom.
I asked her about the drawing he made resembling a door, she told me she was suprised that I knew what a door looks like.
Maybe I should order some doors built for the bedrooms.

15th Granite 202 early spring:
A elven caravan arrived at the fortress today
The engraving of the tombs has been completed. As soon as this population shortage ends, I'm ordering mine built.

9th Slate 202 Mid-Spring:
The miners have become so adept at wrestling they dropped their picks and refuse to mine.
I was about to yell at them and order them to pick up their picks again when I remembered they are more than able to snap my neck in an instant.
I pray that when the immigrants come, at least some of them will be strong enough to continue the work the former miners now refuse to do.

10th Felsite 202 Late spring:
Migrants have finally arrived.
I picked two at random and ordered them to start mining out their new homes.
I also assigned a new woodcutter, the stories the previous leader told me about how the last one was lost make me glad I'm not him.
Our population is now 26.

16th Felsite 202 Late spring:
A pet cow calf went missing today, nobody is sure what happened to it, but its presumed dead.
Its owner wasn't too happy about it, but I'm sure he will be fine.

29th Felsite 202 Late spring:
I ordered for the collection of the goods the elves left behind when one of their mules got eaten by the local wildlife.
The digging of the new bedrooms is going great, but the lack of wood will make sure it will be a long time before the beds are done, at least we don't need a lot of barrels as the elves kindly left some behind.

Right, Downloading/starting on them now.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Your most epic moment of win!
« on: October 22, 2009, 02:46:54 pm »
I was once slaughtering my first town as a hammerman, I dispatched most of the populace relatively easily, when I exited a home containing a axe armed guard and a few peasants. I killed them as well and walked out, I notice some arrows flying to me from across the river  facing the house, I got hit 3 times, and probably wouldn't survive another hit, so I ran into the house, grabbed the axe and flung it towards the archer that was shooting at me, he was decapitated instantly.
Relieved I started walking toward the edge of town and be able to walk my wounds off, when another archer pops out of nowhere and instant headshotting me.
So, it was WIN!....LOSS!... but I like forgetting about the bad parts :)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Wow, epic fail. (fire question)
« on: October 22, 2009, 01:43:41 pm »
I like to mine corridors with closed hatches above all my rooms and fill them with water and in case of emergency I flood the selected room. Works pretty well for fires and nobles.
I made a system like that once... only it involved lots of pressure, when I used it to try and drown a moody clothier a kobold left foot (Now how did that get there axey mc. chopper?) inside one of the doors managed to make the system.... obtain new Fun features.

You can avoid pressure problems with a few floodgates
No, the pressure was intentional. I hate having to wait 2 seconds for it to fill up, And I had a few wells outside that I could use for controlled flooding of the castle wall interior during sieges.

On one hand that system could just work perfectly... But there is the risk of eventually a huge amount of admins being appointed. I doubt a server filled with admins will go very well.

And... I'm just going to bed. Ill see whether or not you're done in about... 7 hours.
