I layout individual workshops like so:

which allows for at least one guaranteed entrance into any 3x3 workshop except jewlers and bowyers. Requires two doors to seal, but I always have a mason's shop cranking out doors to use up rocks, so it's never been an issue for me. If you have a paucity of doors, just don't door up tanners, farmer's workshops and other shops unlikely to be claimed by moody dwarves.


this isnt any better than just one entrance in the middle as

well it doesnt matter that much, they where elves you see.
but they did not leave right away they kinda just stood there about two seasons.... but the berries made good booze, so im happy.

build a fence(wall) build a staircase to the top of the wall, designate a pit zone  
and assign your cows to it.
