DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Hunters like sleeping on the floor?
« on: January 28, 2008, 10:14:00 pm »
You'll also notice that, if a waterskin and backpack are available, they'll carry their own food and water.  I think hunters are designed to just wander around the wilderness killing things and dragging them back without having to constantly check back in to fulfill basic needs.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Raw clear glass - useless?

Wow, assigning it once via the job screen really does unlock it to be micromanaged directly from the shop.  That is awesome, thanks!

DF Gameplay Questions / Raw clear glass - useless?
« on: January 27, 2008, 07:56:00 am »
I've noticed, with some surprise, that raw clear glass can not be cut by a jeweler like raw green glass can.  What, then, is its point?  Is the fact that it can't be cut into gems a bug or a design decision?

I've also found some rock crystal for the first time in my current fortress.  How should I use it?  To make crystal glass items?  To cut directly by itself?  Can I turn it into raw crystal glass and cut that like green glass?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Why do elves hate trading

The elves are what you do with all those hundreds of bins of useless stone crafts.

Just don't sell them the bins, too, assuming you made those of wood!

There IS a manual on how to read the manual!  Keep hitting "?".  I thought it was funny because if you keep doing it, it just says "I don't know how to explain this any clearer."

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Sparring
« on: December 04, 2007, 08:06:00 pm »
All my dwarves train marksmanship to legendary before they're allowed to spar at all.  Granted, I've only been able to do this due to a densely forested map and an early strange mood resulting in a legendary woodcrafter (arrows arrows arrows everywhere!).  Once they've hit legendary with marksdwarfship, they get plate mail and a shield and go to wrestling until legendary, then they get crappy copper or bronze hammers (for when marksdwarves run out of bolts) till legendary, then finally they're awarded their masterwork obsidian shortswords.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Best way to train a weaponsmith?

'k, I'll make a bunch of picks (since I'm training strength in my hauling peasants) and then switch to axes.  Thanks!

DF Gameplay Questions / Best way to train a weaponsmith?
« on: December 03, 2007, 05:54:00 pm »
Well, looks like the migrants aren't going to send me another weaponsmith, and the one I started the map with went insane when we supposedly destroyed his engravings (I swear I didn't, but that's a topic for a bug report).  It's time to train one from scratch.

So, my question: what's a fast, cheap weapon or item to train with in the magma forge?  I know armorsmiths are best brought up with bucklers, for example.  Preferably, I'm looking for something that takes as little material as possible and has a short build time.

Note that I'll be melting down the results, as I have a few hundred masterpiece obsidian short swords lying around.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How do I trade now?
« on: November 11, 2007, 11:35:00 am »
Yeah, since I posted the above I've noticed that you can get the broker there without filling out all the stuff.  But when I can't get him in there, canceling all the pending items seems to almost always (unless he's trying to pick a crop or chain an animal - stupid un-disable-able jobs) light a fire under him.

Nothing worse than missing those picky humans by a matter of seconds...

I've found that the broker won't come to trade until you've dragged all items marked for trade to the depot.  Same thing applies if you've set anyone to be able to stand in for the broker; the last person to take an item to the depot will stay there, but not before.

As far as I know, there's no way to limit it to dwarf-sized items.  And yeah, it's pretty frustrating; after several goblin sieges, I have ridiculous amounts of narrow clothing/armor littering my stockpiles.  The metal stuff I just melt, of course, but there's no good way to handle the other, short of setting its dump flag and letting it get taken out with the garbage.

Actually, you get two bad thoughts, one for tattered clothing and one for old clothing.  And I've actually seen dwarves that should otherwise be at least content with the flashing red arrow of doom for little stuff like clothing and maybe some flies.  But then, in my fortress my leader spends all his time talking to a Merchant who won't leave, so that could explain the unhappy people - no one gets a meeting.

I was working on a way to kill the bugger, but my leader won't go into his new office.  I wonder if he's somehow noticed that it's connected to a floodgate-blocked channel leading to the river, or that it's shaped like a giant skull and crossbones?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarves Ignoring "Stay Inside" instructions
« on: January 25, 2008, 09:50:00 pm »
I've actually had pretty good luck with them staying inside when I say so lately, though I do have problems with dwarves outside when the order comes down the pipe refusing to go inside (see "The Titan Cometh" post for an example).

DF Gameplay Questions / Legendary Dwarves and the Economy
« on: January 25, 2008, 03:50:00 am »
What exactly happens to a legendary dwarf in the economy?  I've been making getting all legendary dwarves a goal for my current fortress, since it means I can give them fantastic engraved rooms without worrying about 10k rent.  But I notice that it removes their earnings entry entirely from their info page; does that mean they have no money at all?  If that's the case, are they not allowed to buy things at shops?  Can they never gain items, own a shop, replace clothing, etc?

On a similar topic, will dwarves move?  I've seen extremely wealthy dwarves sitting in 1x2 undetailed slums; will they eventually move to a domicile more appropriate to their financial tier?
