Hell, they seem to expect it even. I wonder what percent of dwarves are abducted as children... 40%? 80%?

 I've noticed where if I purchased [5] Strawberries from the caravan, I could brew them all and get their respective seeds. However, upon going to repeat the process for the harvested crop, I can no longer brew the strawberries, and in the kitchen screen, the strawberries do not have brewing even listed as a possibility, even though prior it had been an option (and turned on). I'm assuming one of the following things:

A) Certain crops have bush forms/forms that require processing before they may be brewed

-or-

B) There is a glitch with some harvested crops where they have a different... "identity" of sorts, where they are not like their "un-bugged"versions brought by embark/caravans.               (2 versions of the same crop, the harvested version is bugged, but the purchased version is not)

I read elsewhere that the plantable seeds available in the menu for a given season are determined by the current season, not the season you've selected. So. Wait until summer and see if anything changes?

 It happened to me on my embark where cave wheat and pig tails weren't available as options to plant, even though I had the seeds for it. However, when it became summer, the options became available not only for the normal planting seasons of summer and autumn, but also for spring and winter as well. Unfortunately, my game corrupted itself before I could see if the dwarves would plant crops out-of-season.

I always crank up megabeast/semi-megabeast and titan to max, while reducing werewolves & vampires to minimum.

Usually I leave the end year at 5 or so, with very few civilizations, and no required biome sizes.

1 Woodworker     (Woodcutting=Proficient, Carpentry=Proficient)
1 Stoneworker     (Masonry=Proficient, Detailing=Proficient)
1 Mechanic         (Mechanics=Proficient, Stone Crafting=Proficient)
2 Farmers           (Farming=Competent, Threshing=Novice, Weaving & Clothesmaking = Adequate, Dyeing=Novice, Milling=Novice)
1 Leader             (Appraisal=Adequate, Judge of Intent=Adequate, Bookkeeping=Adequate, Organizer=Adequate, Leader=Adequate)

Note:
-Leader gets a pick to help mine at embark
-Enough food/drink are brought to last without cook/brewer in first year
-All migrant men are enlisted for duty as soon as they arrive
-The main export of the fortress is clothing, with dye & fiber grown on-site

Are you producing only wine/few other drinks? I believe that if a dwarf has become tired of drinking the same old booze for a while, they may stop drinking altogether.

I've encountered this glitch myself with military, I fixed it by causing a cave-in a few tiles over. I'm certain there's a better way to fix it though.

Be very careful; Power like what you're about to receive can go to your head. I got the weapon once, and never again did I lose a dwarf to melee!
