IIRC last time our player got killed N1 and couldn't fit the wildcard games to their schedule, and thus finished the tournament having played very little.

In the final quest of the Thieves Guild line in Oblivion, you have to bring an arrow with a key as its head that you have to shoot into a lock from across the room. The same quest also has you use magical jumping boots to survive a long fall.

And if you're looking for items to use as tools for a quest, why not actual tools and trinkets? A silent hammer. A bottle of special perfume to Charm a guard. A belt with a coded message written on it. A gnomish recording phonograph to eavesdrop a confession. A pair of goggles so dark that they make you blind to everything but a monster that otherwise shines like the sun.

A Hand of Glory, in any form of the myth, would be useful for a sneak (whether it turns you invisible, shines a light only you can see, entrances anyone but you looking at it, or whatever).

This is a risky move, but 100$ says Alaking wins this one.

Pikaduo, I choose you!

Pikaduo first uses his speed to evade, sometimes even appearing at two places at once [Double Team], this made even more confusing by the two heads. This puts him in position to fire out a spiraling arc of AC current (by alternating heads) into Oddpix. [Thunder Wave]. Then...

...if Pikaduo is going to win the bout, he gets close to the paralyzed Oddpix and unleashes a barrage of talon and beak to soften his opponent [Fury Attack] for the finisher. To add insult to injury, the finishing move shall be the notoriously inaccurate [Thunder], which might take an attempt or two to land, but with a paralyzed opponent that shouldn't cause a problem.

...if Pikaduo is going to lose the bout, he sweats at the failed paralysis and prepares a shimmering, absorbing field of electricity [Light Screen] but this fails as Oddpix's attack isn't Special. The attack goes right through, delivering a finishing blow.

I'm tempted to combine magikarp and caterpie, but I know that would not be fun to actually use.

You are saved, since neither of those is currently available as a starter. You'll have to trade RGU for Caterpie, and Magikarp is #129 so you'll have to buy it as a rare pokémon. Magikarp would actually be a pretty decent choice, though, since we're only looking at types and not stats or moves.
