Overseer's diary 1st Hematite;

Everything seems to be going well so far. I haven't hit any new veins of iron through exploratory mining yet, however the first and second caverns are a 100% walled off. Once the third cavern has completely been sealed off I may develop plans for an bridged entrance to the second cavern for silk collection purposes, as it would be easy enough for a farming development in there. Some more Galena veins have been found and there is olivine stone now available for any colour coding ambitions. I've collected some of the forbidden cages and started a taming project to handle the caught animals. I also filtered out the new animal stockpile to provide a closed door holding area next to the "live target" archery range specifically for goblins.

I've placed a cage inside the depot area to dump the nuisance puppies (all of them) in till they've grown enough for proper handling. I've culled a couple stray breeders to prevent a population explosion and trained a few more war dogs to wander around. I haven't yet seen what the elves have in stock, but I assume I will be able to buy what I need with the goods available. The Ashery and Dyer's shop has been built, however I'm still waiting on the soap maker's workshop to finish.  There has been a slight increase in the number of brewed drinks stockpile. There hasn't been much difference to the fortress look so far. Well aside from a mess that will be closed off once the ore has been removed.

Oh and Kulet Stinthadlikot had Become a child on the 15th of Felsite. No new births have occurred though I will ensure there is a major holiday after the Human caravan has left, provided there is no Gobbo/Kobbo interruptions.

Note: There hasn't been much of a slow down yet. FPS went about as high as 38 when most of the dorfs were on break/eating/drinking/sleeping which was almost nice. More will be posted tomorrow.

Got it, compiling entry pics (I wish I brought my mouse). Sorry for the wait- was being pampered by a cunning boyfriend, who I will eventually teach DF to.

Necrisha's overseer Dairy;
Entry one
I was idling in my bedrroom when bp920091 bolted in and threw the overseer's tablet on top of me. I decided to spend a bit of time to familiarize myself with all parts of the fortress and not just the barracks and workshops.

Well here's the first bit:
Entrance +first level down

second level of crafts.

The Tombs and archery range?

The familiar pastures:

Right I guess fishing is important.

And the underground farms.

I was fine until I descended into the first cavern and realized there was a great section of the main staircase exposed to ANY flying creatures! I decided that out of anything, I must remedy this! Tour over, I knew what to do, and what I was getting into.

EDIT: Ok I'm back and my editing program is being a tard so there will be no messing around with the in-between images... Oh, and day one Baseline fps-26 :)

It's pretty common in my forts and saved me from a couple of tantrum spirals. Just wait till one has a baby- then you'll really see happiness skyrocket.

I like the idea of walling one that's already had a mood into part of the fortress as an emergency measure. Other than that maybe having an airlock/burror system so that once you release them only the dorf's who didn't make it inside risk a mauling if they're active during the wrong part of the month- Also why release rabbits when you can have a lever activated birdsplosion in the middle of the preferred battleground?

Seems like the best bet unless multiple worlds are involved. I'm not signing up right now but I may in the future...

That way you could go through more people by assigning them one of 2 or 3 according to their preferences like have one world dedicated to dealing with rampaging titans/megabeasts/forgotten beasts for those that like that sort of thing. and maybe one that's got only one cavern and extra levels of hell/necromancer to conquer/capture/weaponize and maybe one designed for mega-projects complete with the occasional siege/constant thefts to mess your timing up.

After their first round they can choose to continue or jump to the last in line of a different world. Of course that's more effort for organizers even if there's a "Team leader" in charge of each world.

Maybe maintain a shortlist that's refreshed once a monthly/biweekly or longer based on who's available during that time period and any who don't get a turn and available the next time period are at the front- Would first timer's get automatic priority or is there a certain amount of time after a person's first round where they are filtered in the same as a first timer?

I've tried it and as long as you've completed the wall or cave in while all your beekeepers have that labor turned off it doesn't cause cancellation spam once you turn it back on. The fun part is when they find a new bee-less location to sit on like their trying to work.

first year above ground Depot in an Terrifying Biome side of the map. I didn't even wall it in on one side yet... The side that suddenly produced Huskfying cursed clouds just after the merchants were settled in to trade. As soon as the first one became a husk- I abandoned...

Actually I think that's more of a headesk one.

and a LOL- WHAT on reclaim as the Outpost liaison and the Merchants were still there and friendly... I haven't hit resume yet as I wanted to Draft my five warriors to handle any berserking. Ended up on the Taiga side of the ocean.

Edit: Turns out the merchants were indeed husks but the liaison is still around friendly...

This is the save file. If it's buggy I can upload the associated modded DF but I don't think there should be much of a problem.

There's not a whole lot that can be done about it right now, which is sad (I like bee keeping... animal taming too), but don't hold it personally against the dwarf.

Aside from building a 3x3 wall where they keep going- yes not a whole lot.

Dear. Urist McMasons,

We are in a terrifying biome! If you don't buil-

Dear Husks,

Nevermind.

Did you try digging through the Hall of legends in the community games forum? Here: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=89305.0

Deathgate seems like a good one... Actually The community games an stories forum is your best bet in general.

If you get reaaally annoyed at cancellation spam you can go into orders and tell them to not announce at all. then you'll just get the big stuff like suspended buildings or if it's the result of a creature.

EDIT: try an ammo stockpile that doesn't use bins lightman. it could help.

O.O me play adventurer? No. I haven't had an adventurer last through the first quest in the most benign settings with companions yet. That world has triple the base number of caves, several of each titans, megabeasts, and semimegabeasts to gank me while travelling - in addition to the over 4000 goblins to worry about. (I might recreate said world later to see if I can get over 9000)  8)

If someone wants to try it's using modest mod with seasonal crops (not that that matters) and I can either zip the whole thing or just the world file on DFFD on request. Parameters available upon request tomorrow...

I've been trying to gen a really interesting pocket world with lots of goblins and kobolds for a succession fort and came across this while looking at the population reports:

Civilized World Population

   996 Dwarves
   963 Humans
   1 Elf
   4134 Goblins
   492 Kobolds

   Total: 6586

Think he'll be bringing a caravan full of exotics? Now where is he?

8: Ukgeostost, "Profanemighty", dark fortress
   Owner: The Prime Torments, goblins
Parent Civ: The Braided Scourge, goblins
   4134 goblins
   54 dwarves
   54 humans
   1 elf
   20 human prisoners
   11 dwarf prisoners

hmmm... maybe I should keep that one and try to embark close to that tower. Unfortunately I need more elves for the sort of fort I was looking for- so here we go again.

No worries :) As long as I'm somewhere in the first 10 or 15 years I'm good.

I find my comp doesn't lock up from overly complex scripts and it's very forum post friendly.
